yummy, nutritious whole foods-based gel
This is the gel I've been waiting for. The taste is way more interesting than the traditional hyper-processed gels that are abundant at sports stores. And the best part? This is actually more nutritious than those other gels, likely due to the molasses. Just a quick glance at the nutrition labels: Muir has over 300mg of potassium (Clif is under 100mg), and Muir has a good chunk of your daily value for vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese (Clif has ZERO). Muir has all of this and none of the "tapioca syrup, maltodextrin, sunflower oil, carnauba wax" in Clif's products. This gel may not be for you if you are the kind of person that cannot tolerate natural peanut butter (the kind that you have to stir and can have an inconsistent texture), and would rather have hydrogenated, sweetened, shelf-stable peanut butter. A truly whole-foods based product won't give you the "McDonalds hamburger tastes the same in all 50 states" experience.

The texture/flavor combo is not good
I tried to eat the vanilla cashew flavor during a half marathon I did this summer, and thought nothing of trying a new brand since I eat Gu and Clif products often for races & hiking. This was very thick and hard to swallow, and I found the texture off-putting (kind-of gritty). In combination with the texture, the flavor was so unpleasant that I almost threw up while I was running the race! I couldn't even finish it with my water. I put it back into my pocket and threw it away at an aid station! Just awful! I tossed the other flavor I bought, and will probably not buy more or try any other flavors.

I HATE gels...

But Muir Energy Gels are NEXT LEVEL! Simple and easily accessible nutrition. Only 4-5 ingredients. Creative and satisfying flavors. Made fresh in San Diego. No more Cliff or Gu or Scratch or HoneyStinger... Next time you spend your REI dividend online toss a few of these into your cart. You will be blown away!

Finally, Something Natural & Healthy

This is not a regular gel - don't expect a sugar-filled, cake flavored high fructose bomb. This is a mixture of healthy ingredients that's similar to a standard gel, but a little thicker. If you're looking for a healthy alternative to a nutritionally devoid "energy" gel - this is the move. If you're conditioned to eat sweets and suck down regular gels, this will probably not be to your taste, just like if you were asked to eat fruit after eating chocolate protein bars for years. I love these out on the trail. They're perfect before a big climb or when I need a boost for those last few miles home.

Real Food, Real Fuel

Muir products caught my eye while restocking my energy gel stash and I’m glad they did. I’d not heard of them and figured I’d give them a try. As usual, I bought 10 to get the discount, which turned out to be a good thing as I got a mix of flavors and types. Yes, not only do they have a variety of flavors, they also have two types of gels for your activities, so pay attention when you pick them up. The fast burn is the quick energy you’re used to in energy gels, but Muir also offers slow burn for the longer activities. I found each flavor to be very tasty and will be back for more.

Clean nutrition for runs

Have tried the cacao, blueberry, and raspberry flavors. All of them were great, and I do feel like the "fast burning" or "slow burning" descriptions were accurate. The slow burning gels are ideal if you're on a long slow run, and the fast burning are good for fueling higher intensity efforts. I've seen a lot of reviews on here complaining about the taste, but I totally disagree and am not sure what people expect. These gels use real food ingredients, and people generally choose them because they want to try something other than a highly processed, synthetic gel (no shade on Gu, I still use them all the time). Muir Energy tastes like actual food, which is the point, and I enjoy the flavor.

So yummy! And it's Organic!!

These gels were perfect for a long hike with a friend. She was feeling sluggish and didn't bring any snacks with her so I gave her a gel packet and we were able to keep going to the summit without any issues. Super delicious stuff!

Tastes great with an even better texture

I'm generally not a fan of gels mostly due to the slimy texture, but Muir has a consistency more similar to a jam that makes it much more palatable. Throw in the fact it's vegan and uses real ingredients and you can't go wrong!

Fantastic and Different

I brought one of these with me on a 90 mile ride. It saved my butt as I was close to bonking at mile 82. I bought it on a whim (and was honestly a little taken aback at the high price), but will definitely buy again. I always have a hard time offering a fair review on the flavor, as pretty much anything would taste good to me if I'm in bonk-mode. But - this did taste good! It was a thicker texture, but was satisfying. I usually use Hammer Gels or Gu. This was a nice change. Highly recommended.
