My favorite gel on the market
I have been using clif gels and bloks for a long time but I was in REI the other day and decided to buy a few roctane gels just to give them a try and I can say with certainty that these are way better than clif gels! I took these on a 4 hour run in the mountains last weekend and these kept me going strong. The flavor is not as sweet as clif, which is a huge upside for me because sometimes the sweetness of the gels upset my stomach. The roctane gels have the same mellow flavor of the clif bloks which do the same thing as the gels but taste much better. So from now on, I'm replacing my clif gels with GU roctane and sticking with the clif bloks.
Gave me that extra little boost
Today was the first time I used the Roctane version of GU. I have previously used the normal version. I took the Roctane about 10 minutes before I went on a 10.5 mile run, it kept me feeling fresh, and I felt like I had an extra little sumthin' sumthin' in me towards the end of the run when I am usually exhausted. The only issue is that this product tasted alot worse than the other gel that I have used. But it's not as if we take this stuff for the taste anyways, right? The price is a bit more expensive than the other products but just wait until REI has them on sale to buy them, and you should be ok.
Tastes Good and Works Well
Used some of the roctanes when on a mountaineering trip this past winter. I took my first one about 45 minute into the approach and another after a few hours. The Blueberry Pomegranate tasted just fine and I didn't taste anything off compare to normal flavors of gels. I've consumed many different gels over the years and these are up there with the taste and consistency. Even in below freezing temps they didn't freeze. Worked for what I needed them for but probably will stay with regular Gu to save $ unless I need the extra boost from these.
It's a gel!
I wish that gel manufacturers would create an easier to open package. Getting these open with gloves on or with sweaty hands ( or even teeth) can be challenging, especially after 20+ miles.
Blueberry Pomegranate tastes like cough syrup
I was on a mission to try all the Gu flavors. I generally avoid berry flavors because they can easily slip into cough syrup territory, but I was determined to try them all! The Tri Berry (regular Gu) flavor ended up being one of my favorites! But the Blueberry Pomegranate Roctane Gu straight up tastes like medicine. Nasty!
Noticably better than other gel shots
I had these mixed in with other energy gel shots while I did Cactus to Clouds last weekend. I could literally feel a difference in my legs when I had a Roctane versus the Norman Gu, Honey stinger, or Clif shots. I will be buying these for big h ikes going forward. I had the pomegranate blueberry, and the sea salt and chocolate and they tasted as good as any other goo I have eaten lol.
Energy in your finger tips!
A great energy booster. I agree, it does give you a high and then gets you down too..but then most of them do it. The flavors are great. The only con I felt about the "roctane" GU was it sits heavy and may not agree with everyones stomach.
Tried and true!
Still my favorite energy boost on a long run. Small and portable, easy to ingest while actively moving. And of course, effective. I try to eat it just before I start to feel myself hitting a wall, and then I call it my "GU second wind" when it kicks in and helps me make it through the rest of my run. The chocolate flavors tend to be my favorite, but most of the flavors are acceptable at least. The main thing I don't love about GU is that they really can be quite cloying and sticky, which means it takes me a bit to get through one (because it's so thick that I can't breathe through it and have to take multiple bites off it to ensure I can keep running while eating it). Plus, gotta drink a good amount of water after ingesting too, which doesn't always feel great. However, both those things are totally worth it to me, and I'll continue to use this as my main long run lifesaver.
Really Gets Me Poppin’!
This really puts a kick in my step! There have been multiple occasions where I am climbing thousands of vertical feet and have not needed to slow down after taking one of these babies. It’s almost amazing how consistent my pace becomes during an exhausting stretch. Only downside is that it can tend to keep me awake at night if I were to consume it after noon but that might just be a personal thing. Seems almost like a red bull concentrate.
Wow!
Made for longer runs with some extra ingredients. Have tried all flavors;,but the Island Nectar is by far the best. Not good as a snack in your office but when hiking or backpacking it works very well.
