I used these shoes on gravel roads and a gravel running trail. 5 runs, 3 miles-5 miles each. They worked great for this..didn't even feel the "unevenness" of the gravel. The size was true- I ran in a 7, which is what I normally run in. One picture shows where my toes hit with thinner running socks on; just the right amount of room so that with a bit heavier, more cushioned socks the fit was also great. The soles are such that rocks/gravel don't get stuck (a plus on gravel and chat!) Once I figured out the lacing system and how to adjust it just right (make them loose and the laces will loosen evenly throughout as I run), the only issue I had was the extra was so long I had to tuck in under the cross laced part. They are a bit heavier than non-trail runners that I normally run in and didn't have as "cushioned" a feel, so for long road "road runs" I would probably not use them. No opportunity to try them yet for hiking, although I am excited to try them for that purpose this next Spring.
These shoes have me the confidence to run hop and jump the single track trail without slowing down. Shoes have great traction fir Barton creek slippery rocks. The bounce helped w jumping over rocks and roots. Great trail shoe for Austin’s Barton creek green belt. Only negative thing would be a more secure way to hold the laces .. it came undone 3 tim s on first run. Other ham that great bounce and traction.. fit gtreat and shin I felt confident to jump and sore through the forest without slowing down
First Impressions: When I took these out of the box my first reaction was, “Those are sweet!” I truly do not care what my running shoes look like but anytime I can find a trail shoe that is not dusty gray or car tire black, I am excited. The purple looks nice but is still dark enough that trail dirt would not be as obvious on it. I also noticed the bright laces. They looked pretty but flimsy and I was skeptical as to how well the laces would even hold up on the trail (Unfortunately, I did not wear the shoes long enough to truly determine the durability of the laces). Putting the shoes on, gave me an even more negative impression of the laces. I am not a fan of the no-tie lacing system. I like to re-lace my shoes using ladder lacing with a heel lock and I was unable to do that with these laces (unless, of course I cut them, which I could have done). Wearing the shoes, I could definitely feel my heels slipping so I would have preferred to have seen the laces left loose from the no-tie system with the option to add the no-tie system yourself. Slipping, the shoes on, I was not a fan of the foot feel. I normally wear zero drop shoes and search out the widest toe box I can find. The XA Elevate offer neither of these features. The 8 mm heel to toe drop felt huge and the forefoot and toe box felt quite narrow compared to the trail shoes I wear on a regular basis. The fit was different but not a deal break. I decided to give the Elevates a few test runs. “Tying” the shoes was interesting. Given the no-tie system I had to cinch up the laces which left me with a very long lace that I had to figure out what to do with so I would not be tripping over it. I had no idea where to stash it. Guess what? There is a little pocket in the tongue of the shoe (see picture)! I tucked the lace up into there and was ready to go! That is a very unique and cool feature! As far as sizing goes, the shoes are true to size. I regularly wear a 9 in running shoes but, at the advice of Salomon, ordered an 8 (my every day shoe size). The 8 fit perfectly. My first test run was a short 3 miles on a hard packed dirt trail. I was worried that the narrow fit would aggravate the PF pain I was feeling in my foot since a 50K 2 weeks ago but these did not seem to aggravate it at all. The Elevate definitely has a firm ride. My second test run was a speed workout on mixed terrain. This was the workout where I started thinking that maybe this was not the best shoe for me. About 2 miles in, my toes started going numb. After 20 years of running I know this telltale sign - that toe box is too narrow for my foot. Thinking that maybe it was just the speedwork mechanics that caused the numbness I decided to go ahead and take the Elevates out on my 10 mile trail run on a rocky, technical trail. Right off I noticed the firm ride but I also noticed the firm grip the shoes provided on the trail as well as the extra protection for the bottoms of my feet. The last mile of this trail is extremely rocky and I dread going over it at the end of my long runs on tired feet. Usually I feel every single rock. In the Elevates, I barely felt those rocks. My feet loved that aspect. However, about halfway through the run I started feeling that heel slip again and really just did not like how I felt on the trail with the higher heel to toe drop. In the end, I really wanted to love these shoes but they just are not for me. I think these would be great for a beginner trail runner as the ride is stable and firm and the lugs on the bottom provide great protection. However, if you need a really wide toe box and/or a lower heel to toe drop these probably are not the shoe to choose.
I went from the X-mission 3 to the XA Elevate and was first a bit hesitant about the transition. My Mission’s fit me like a glove and were super responsive to the terrain I was on. First time in the Elevates I thought they were a little stiff, which was different from the flexy and connected feel I had in the Mission’s. But after putting some miles on them, I wasn’t longing to get back in my Mission’s. These shoes are super rad - I felt very supported on all terrain ranging from icy hard pack to wet and rooted trails. As I put more miles on the shoe, it got more flexible; but it’s supportive nature never changed, and I find that to be one of the biggest downfalls of my last trail runners. Also, the pull-tab lacing keeps them snug all day and keeps out any unwanted trail debris (rocks, twigs, etc). I like being able to move quick and for a long time, without worrying about my shoes loosening too much. Stoked on these guys, would 10/10 recommend.
I have been able to try out the Salomon XA Elevate on everything from rocky terrain to snow covered trails and these shoes respond beautifully! I have been using the XA Elevate mostly for short-medium length runs on varied terrain, but they have also been great for hiking around on the trails. I usually prefer lightweight shoes so when I first tried on the XA Elevate I thought they might be too heavy/cumbersome, but I was pleasantly surprised. While the XA Elevate are protective, durable, and sufficiently cushioned, they are also surprisingly light and responsive, resulting in a smooth, comfortable, and fun ride. Additionally, I don't have to worry about slipping on wet or rocky surfaces because the traction that the rubber soles provide is great. Although the appearance of a running shoe is usually of least importance for me, I have to say that the colors of this shoe are awesome. I have the dark purple/blue curacao color and I love it! Furthermore, the single-pull quicklace system (using the pockets on the tongues to hide the laces) is easy to use and keeps my feet snug. The only reason I did not give these shoes 5 stars is because the toe box was a little too narrow for me. This is simply a personal preference, and I can still wear the shoes for shorter runs or hikes, but I unfortunately won't be able to wear them for longer runs due to narrow fit. Overall, the eye-catching Salomon XA Elevate is a versatile, reliable, and fun shoe, and I would highly recommend it!
Light and Agile, I love the sensitivity and breathability of the XA - Glove like fit. Every part of my foot is supported.I typically wear a 8 but a 7.5 fits me perfectly. I was tentative to trade in my Speedcross ( which I love ) for the XA Elevate but after three weeks wearing these I am hooked. Light and balanced without sacrificing stability or drive. Thank you Salomon, killer design! These are my new go to trail shoe.
Just hiked 166 miles on the Camino de Santiago and these were perfect! They were comfy and supportive. No blisters or hot spots. An unexpected bonus was how quickly they dried. We experienced a couple of very severe downpours during our trip. My shoes were completely soaked as we were forced to wade through rushing water (very unusual for the Camino!). By morning, the shoes were merely damp and, after walking in them for a few hours, they dried on their own, from the heat generated by my feet. Awesome!
I was skeptical of this shoe at first. With its 8 mm heel-toe offset and feel, it seemed more like a strong hiking shoe than suitable trail running (and racing) shoe. Boy was I wrong. After one run in this shoe I was hooked. It is responsive, light, sturdy, and perfect for some rocky, technical east coast trails. This shoe performs. It has the predictable snug and precise Salomon fit and allows me to frolic across the rockiest terrain without fear for my feet or ankles. In fact, I loved this shoe so much I used it for my 50K trail race this weekend - after just 3 runs in it. Yup, it's that good. It performed beautifully on the slick, muddy, snow-dusted trails and stayed snug on my foot, giving me the precise fit I love for racing. It transitions from hammering a downhill to powerhiking the climbs with ease. This is an all-around shoe perfect for your long runs, steady efforts, and ultra-distant racing. I'm not sure I'd choose this shore for shorter races (such as a half-marathon), but it is a perfect, responsive workhorse for your long runs and races that involve varied terrain, hike-to-run transitions, and a solid, tough (but light! and responsive!) shoe that can handle rocks, streams, mud, and treacherous ankle deep leaves.
I loved these shoes! I think the sole provides a lot of stability and comfort, and the shoes absorbed a lot of shock on the trail while feeling "bouncy" enough that they propel me forward with each step. The upper feels very light, so these shoes don't feel heavy despite the thickness of the sole. It's also super easy to get into the shoes with this lacing system! The only issue is that the toebox was a bit tight and gave me minor blisters at first, but that issue disappeared with some breaking in.
Wow! Solomon XA Elevate hit that sweet spot between a trail runner and hiking shoes. I have recently worn these shoes trail running on flat smooth dirt at the wetlands near the beach, and then, up steep mountain (5,000'-8,000' elevation) terrains in the San Gabriel Mountains in SoCal. I'm a weekend high elevation hiker, who loves to run down steep mountain terrain when descending the peak. First, the contragrip outsole has a remarkably great traction for gripping rocks and dirt, especially going downhill. The forefoot is slightly stiff but not uncomfortable, and gives that level of confidence and stability when I'm running downhill over rocky terrain. The toebox are wide enough and didn't at all feel like my toes were bunched up together after descending the mountain. These shoes have the speed lace system, which I am not a big fan of, but acceptable in light of all the positive things about these shoes. Overall, these shoes are well designed and comfortable, and are great for those who enjoy trail running and peak bagging or even backpacking. It has become my go to hiking shoes.
