Great upgrades for 2018

It took me a while reading through all the reviews out there to realize exactly what changes have been made to this bag. Some of the complaints about old versions are showing up for the current model. (Both on this site and others) This review should clear some things up. First, I have not owned the previous models and have only just received my bag. I have not had a chance to use it. This thing is a beast. The back panel is like a bathtub of hard plastic/vinyl material. The place where the wheel housings are bolted on looks very robust and replaceable. There are actually two halves to the wheel housing, one inside the bag and one outside. The outside housing bolts to the inside housing. The wheel itself is the best rolling wheel I have seen on luggage, and is super wide (upgraded from skinnier wheels on the old model). It is super smooth. The handle housing is bolted to the plastic bathtub piece in 2 places. There is a piece on the inside that it bolts to at the top and bottom, so it has an anchor on the inside of the bag. There are two buttons to operate the handle, but you can use either one. (Another reviewer was wrong about this, even for the older models). There is a metal brace inside the base of the bag that gives the bag shape. You can unhook it so that the bag collapses flatter for storage. There are daisy chains both inside the bag and out, as well as the compression straps both inside and out to control the load. On the outside of the bag, there is a small pocket up top, a large pocket for shoes, and a ginormous slash pocket behind the big north face logo, which is the size of the entire flap. There’s also a divided mesh pocket on the inside of the lid. I can’t find fault with the stitching, materials or the design. I am happy with the 30” size- the 36 is way too bag (and doesn’t have a handle) and the 22” is too small. If they made a 26” I would buy it. I look forward to using this bag. I hope these details help somebody out there.

Handsome & tough, but one flaw is a deal killer

This bag looks great, and is roomy with solid construction. I travel a lot and know right away when something isn't going to work but I was too seduced by the looks and size when buying it, and didn't test out the handle... I just assumed it would have a single-handed release button but it doesn't. You need both hands to operate the handle and that doesn't work for travelers who are used to popping the handle up and down on the fly while still moving, holding another bag, a kid's hand, or even holding tickets/phone/ID cards, getting on an escalator, train, etc. You literally have to stop and put everything down in order to engage the handle up or down. Every bag has a one button release now and it's surprising this one doesn't.

Ready to Roll !

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Perfect for globe trekking trips. Big wheels are better wheels and should be designed for the real worlds vs polished airport floors. Cavernous design and well-thought sub-compartments. However I just got it so can't opine how well it holds up with abuse. So far so good. The bright color is a big plus so you easily find it and can keep your eyes on it in sketch places. This replaces my Jansport and offers more room and better shape profile. Didn't want to go bigger than 30". Overseas domestic flights often up charge for < 20kg so this could easily hit that threshold. Pack wisely. Pack everything you think you'll need then remove half of it.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The bag material is sturdy and has generally tolerated airline bag handlers. However, the corners where the material is fashioned to the rigid bottom has torn from the bottom in two places. Also, one of the hubs of the wheels broke. I tried to order a replacement wheel from TNF and they wanted me to mail the bag back so their warranty department could evaluate. I wasn't even asking for warranty replacement! I would purchase a wheel to save me from buying another large piece of luggage while I waited for their warranty department. Very dissappointed with TNF customer service. Since I now need to replace the bag, I will go with another brand.

Falling apart at the seams

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Rolling Thunder 30 is my favorite travel rolling luggage I've ever had. Big enough to fit everything I need for a trip, while not being so big that I overpack and bust the airlines 50-pound weight limit. I love the hard plastic bottom and waterproof/water resistant top which kept all my things dry. My problem is that the bag literally came apart at the seams between the hard shell bottom, and the soft shell top. I've had the bag for about 3 years now so it's well past any warranty period, but I expected better quality for the price and limited duration. I have a competitor's bag that is also falling apart, but I've travelled with it for 20 years now. So now I'm in the market for a new bag, but I'm just not sure if I should purchase another Rolling Thunder (again, which I loved using) or if I should look elsewhere.

Great for trips of any kind!

I bought the rolling thunder specifically for road trips. My girlfriend and I needed a luggage that would hold both of our gear, and normal non outdoor essentials. I have used it for mountain biking (car camping) trips, snowboarding, and a road trip to Riudoso. It has been carried upstairs with the handles and rolled around on dirt, grass, and puddles of water with no problem. It is reinforced in all of the right places along with not having to much unnecessary material. My girlfriend and I have been able to pack 3 days worth of clothes each along with both of our gear. It arrived within 3 business days!

Way worse quality than previous versions

I had a previous version of a Rolling Thunder Wheeled Duffel - 30" that held up through dozens of international traveling over 3 years but finally the handle had broken so I got this new version earlier this year. On my second trip with this bag, the bottom of the bag totally fell out. North Face made the plastic base with super thing plastic and no reinforcement.

Not tough enough

Seemed to be well designed, but a year and a half and about 6 plane trips, the baggage goons at Denver International killed it. Shattered the plastic base. So...this thing was poorly designed - by definition. Neither REI nor North Face will consider a return. I’m disgusted...

Solid from the handle on down

I also have the 22' and I swear this bag is lighter. When I pack it there always seems to be room for a bit more. With interior and exterior compression straps the bag stays compact and balanced so it rolls well over curbs and bad pavement. Great investment (just wish they still had Summit Yellow...). I have had North Face stuff since the 1960's and have never been dissapointed from jackets to tents to day packs and now suitcases. One niggling comment-- the "lid" flap does not open and stay folded back as awesomely as the rest of the bag works. Tiny complaint. Really tiny.
