Design Shortcoming and Durability Issue
The parts that I expected to have issues from eventually like the wheels and fabric are actually holding up well. However the wings on the edges of the button that depress the locking clips for the telescoping handle were designed with an absolutely inadequate thickness for their length. It cracked on one side near the join and shows stress indications on the other. In comparison with a $35 carry-on I pulled the button from, the REI part has 41% less thickness and is made from a much softer material. If you asked me which was $290 and which was 1/10 the price I would have thought they were swapped. It's a curious design choice on a part that costs pennies yet renders the duffel unusable for it's purpose. REI support said there was nothing to do and directed me to deal with Rainy Pass Repair who, as it turns out, only deal in fabrics. I'm not only very dissatisfied with the general quality of parts on this bag, but also in the quality offered for the high end price.
Fell apart after 2 journeys, terrible nylon.
I used this dufflel twice to fly to Bali, and twice to go from Bali to Thailand, over a period of 2 & a half years. My older (pre-recycled nylon) dufflel is still in perfect shape after 4 years (pictured side by side with the newer nylon one), but the nylon duffel has begun shredding at the zipper seams. These bag have never been taken out of bounds, merely either sat in storage, or checked into airplanes and hotels. This nylon is said to last for many years, but, it did not for me. rei would not exchange it for me even though i only used it twice. Very disappointed. Customer since 1977 (Jantzen Beach!)use to be my favorite store, a real "co-op"
I love this rolling duffel
very very well made, glides like a dream even with 100lbs of stuff in/on it. bag part is built similarly to the three 60L packable REI duffels I have and love. Total of 65 liner inches means I might get hit with $200 oversized bag fee each flight leg. Testing that this week ORD->LAX. Next size down is 87L/60.5", so I wish there was a third size closer to 100L and maximizing 62" checked limit. Overall I couldn't be happier with how much stuff I can squeeze in here, including a Nemo Switchback, Marmot 3P tent, and 2 REI tarp poles in a yoga mat bag (see photo). If I get hit with big fees I'm gonna buy next size down and keep this one for SUV trips....6 stars : )
Disappointing
I had the old style REI rolling duffel with the ballistic nylon. I bought it in 2009, and after 15 years of HARD travel - maybe 50 trips all over the US and Europe - it held up like a champ. Finally, after 15 years, while still useable, it's starting to fray some at the seams and it looks pretty ratty. I went with what I know and bought another REI rolling duffel. After ONE trip, the rubber on the feet has disintegrated and the plastic is wearing. Still on the road, but as soon as I get back I will take it back and get an Eagle Creek or an Osprey. A shame the "upgraded" design is of poor quality.
Very Durable
I travel extensively between Alaska and Seattle, am rough on gear and durability is a huge priority. I really compared this duffle for durability to other vendors offerings. What impresses me is the strength of the REI duffle's frame, wheels and handle. I load to the airlines 50# limit. Leaving the airport I carabiner a backpack to the duffle so I don't have to carry it. This gets rolled around on ferries, buses, light rail and tossed in rental cars then wheeled to hotel rooms. I like the external compression straps that reduce the stress on the zipper and the large interior mesh pocket. I have been very pleased with this rolling duffle.
Almost perfect
The length works out great for carrying our fly rods - the main reason for us buying this duffle. It would be nice if the other dimensions were trimmed down to meet overall airline standards. So far we have not been charged for oversized luggage, but a couple of times they ended up at “oversized” in baggage claim. Both this bag and the previous design, however, have a design flaw that baggage handlers exploit. The bottom front corners abrade against the hard bottom internal shelf and rip out at these points. This has happened on both of our big hauls. I will be buying another and will reinforce those corners.
Great bag, major flaw!
Absolutely the best bag I have ever used. We use the 30" a lot more. Absolutely DO NOT buy a light color, like the moss...It gets permanently stained the second you put them in your trunk or check it in for airline travel. Tried everything possible to clean it and it's impossible. Would by black or the blue one.
Great bag for the price
I purchased the smaller version of this rolling duffel in December of 2019 and first used it on a trip to Spain in the beginning of 2020. I was extremely happy with it as it was loaded to the max weight of overseas travel and well pulling it thru the cobble stone sidewalks of Seville; the large, wide wheels bore the weight well and had no issues with pull handle system; it is well constructed with a lot of attachment points that did not get entangled in the airport cargo handling systems; the bag compression straps helped hold everything in place, so when I saw the larger version of was available online I opted for it.
Not Durable
Normally REI branded gear is solid and reliable but this one is not. The handle separated from the body. I will be taking it back and getting a different brand. Either Patagonia or Osprey.
So Durable!
This bag is amazing. I had the older version of this bag that I purchased in 2008 and it is still a workhorse. It hold so much gear, super durable straps, handles, and zippers. I have attached smaller duffle bags and backpacks to this and have never had any tears or torn seams. I deployed overseas with this, taken it to hurricane regions for humanitarian missions, and drug this all over the country. The wheels surprisingly worked well on dirt roads, caution with small pebbles though. 13 years and I am ready to buy one for our kids as they get ready to for college. I would recommend this bag to anyone!
