Great jacket for any outdoor adventure.
This is a great light jacket, for every outdoor adventure. It is a lite material, so best used in warmer climates. Bicycle rides, running, jogging and hiking. The sleeves are removable. You start the activity with the sleeves on, and as you get warmer, you can easily remove them with the side zippers. Fold them and keep them in your pocket, so that when it gets colder you can put them back on. Definitely a great buy.
Superb, sub 45ºF cycling jacket
Co-Op Cycles Men's Convertible Bike Jacket is made of high quality material and offers exceptional wind/rain shielding and warmth. It provides some ventilation and features a detachable sleeves/upper back piece that when removed (with two zippers and a nifty set of sewn-in magnets) it allows you to ride vest only. As long as you are using this for late fall and winter riding, it won't disappoint. However, for weather above 45ºF, I would recommend looking something a bit cooler. Due to the thick, quality material it takes very little activity for it to get toasty inside. As an added benefit, the clean look makes it acceptable to wear upon arrival for commuters.
First time out on the bike I was impressed!
trying this on for the first time it felt awkward and tight, (as do most bike clothes) when i got on the bike for that early morning long ride everything snapped into place and it was amazing, my riding crew was pretty jealous that i was dressed appropriately for the weather. when i started the ride it was cloud and 38 degrees out and 3 hrs later by the time we finished it was 62 and sunny, took the sleeves off and stowed them in the rear pocket around halfway and when it hit 50 degrees out. rear pocket was perfect to store this in, thought it might seem bulky back there but i never noticed, love the reflectivity but wish for some brighter colors for thise early morning starts. Loved how easy it was to removed the sleeves, during a 30 sec stop to grab some water and regroup. putting the sleeves back on took another minute when i got back home, but just as easy, the soft neck liner was also a plus. don't like how the jacked bunches up in the front (because of the zipper) i don't know if they will ever find a way around this, but that will happen with any jacket and brand for now. Overall I am very pleased with the jacket!
Perfect crossover workout and commuter shell
This is a great jacket -- the materials are very high quality. Shoulders have not shown signs of wear from my commuter backpack, and the jacket breathes well when I'm riding between meetings in hilly Seattle. The magnet holder for the rain cape is innovative and very effective -- no problems with the cape staying in place. The vest without cape is a great fall riding layer.
More Pleased Than I Expected to Be
I bought this jacket to be a middle weight jacket for rides when the temperature was between 40 and the low 50's. With a base layer and a winter weight jersey I've been comfortable on rides as low as 40 degrees, even on somewhat windy days. Even when the temperature went up to the mid-50's the jacket was not too hot. However, I am generally colder than most cyclists so you may be too warm when the temp goes over 50. The small pocket on the front is perfect for a cellphone and a nutrition bar or two. However, the pocket on the back is not very useful except for carrying something that you won't need to access while riding.
Great versatile jacket for the elements
This jacket is a great jacket for riding. The jacket breathes great, but if you get too hot I love that you can turn it into a vest. You don't even have to take the coat off to pull the sleeves off, and you can easily stuff it in the back pocket of the coat. I didn't get a chance to ride in the rain, but the jacket seems like it would keep you dry. The material is very comfortable and light, making it a very versatile coat. I rode my bike on a colder evening, as well as hot windy days, and the coat kept me very comfortable. It is also a very reflective material that was excellent for early mornings and evenings.I would recommend this coat if you're looking for something you can ride in multiple environments.
Nice looking jacket good for brisk days
I wore this jacket on a group ride on a cool October morning. We started off in the sunshine, and I anticipated taking the sleeves off as the day grew warmer. But it never warmed up — we ended up riding in fog for most of the morning, and it never got much above 40 degrees, and other riders remarked on how cold it was. This jacket was effective in blocking the wind and keeping me reasonably warm. It's loose enough that I could have worn more layers underneath.
Stylish and functional
First of all, this is one stylish jacket. From the vest fabric, to the lines, to the reflective elements, REI really nailed the looks of this thing. And when it's together, it looks cohesive rather than like a vest with sleeves attached. Protection-wise, all surfaces of the jacket generally block the wind, though it still gets in through the cuffs of the sleeves. On a colder day I found it to be best paired with a long-sleeve baselayer, which also helps avoid that clammy feeling you can get from waterproof/breathable fabrics such as that on the sleeves. Breathability-wise, there's a lot of well-placed venting going on in this garment, especially under the arms and on the back. The cape only comes down about 1/3 of the back, so most of it is covered just by the vest. Removing the sleeves/cape is easy, even when wearing the jacket--two quick zips, and you can pull it away from the magnets holding it on in back. These magnets are just the right strength, making it easy to take the cape off without it coming off during wear. There's a nice pocket on the back for stowing it, which you can also find and zip by feel. I was a little disappointed that you really need to take the vest off in order to put it back with the sleeves properly, the main issue being that it's borderline impossible to reach the bottom of the shoulder zips with both hands to get them started, especially with gloves on. It seems like REI could fix this by inverting the shoulder zippers so they start at the top, making them easier to reach with two hands or easier to start with just one. Sizing note: I'm a 5'9", 140 lb. male, and the Small fit me perfectly in every aspect. The fit is athletic without being too tight--I was able to wear a couple of layers under it without feeling constrained.
Good Transitional Season Gear
I tested the Co-Op Convertible Jacket during fall rides. I was initially a little skeptical about this jacket but quickly came to like it. I tried removing and replacing the cape feature at home prior to a ride and found that it wasn't so much gimmicky and actually had good function and quick use. It was relatively easy to remove and replace. My rides were mainly cooler temps 40's-50's but I did have a ride in the low 60's. The vest has good wind resistance especially considering how thin and light it is. The sleeves have good water resistance and are a nice barrier to keep arms warmer. I like how the neck closes when the vest is zipped. It was not too tight but worked nicely to prevent airflow to cool during windier conditions. I don't think I would have chosen this gear but having tested it, I am impressed and actually plan to continue using it. I think it is a solid transitional season gear option especially for a bike commuter but also for recreational use. Good function, comfortable reliable gear option.
Whoa, Co-op Cycles is paying attention.
Stopped at REI and found this on the sale rack. At first I was very skeptical of the convertible Vest/Jacket contraptions but whoa...this one seems different. First of all, it uses about 10 MAGNETS on the back and two small zippers on your chest to detach the single piece "cape" (see sleeves). Other interesting features I like: Folds down very compact. No need to carry vest AND rain jacket. Aesthetically attractive IMO, no gaudy logos! It is possible to quickly rip the sleeves/"cape" off at a stoplight without removing jacket because zips on chest & magnets out back. Only $83 ! Nice slim fit (I usually wear medium but the size small was perfect over two thin wool base layers) Neck is nice and wide, even on size small! Reflective touches everywhere including the horizontal lines woven in every inch or so, across the butt area, chest, big stripes on the sleeves that don't look too bad compared to Shower's Pass implementation. Just enough pockets but not too many. No armpit zips, pits are just open all the time but have a flap that keeps water out. Great ventilation in vest mode across the shoulder blades. When you fold the jacket for bag stowing the neighboring magnets allow you to fold it perfectly in half and stays bundled in bag. I weighed my three rain jackets and this one still weighed less than my casual hooded rain jacket despite having a bunch of magnets tipping the scales. However It was not as light as the bare bones Gore rain jacket it is replacing. Things I dislike: Not sure if material is very water proof in a downpour, doesn't appear to be (maybe it dries quickly though?) No double zipper to allow unzip from the bottom of the jacket (if you've ever had a jacket that has this feature you will understand how this prevents chest bunching) Wish they had a version in a non-obnoxious yet visible orange color. Wish they had a wide strip of reflective material along the base of the cape (same width as seen on sleeves) Overall i'm excited to try this on my next rainy ride and see how well the material holds up.
