I exist as a vagabond working in multiple states for a single unnamed agency doing what I love, which is being outside. That said, I took this shoe on three separate trail runs in two separate states to test it out. one never knows what to expect of the weather in the fall. It might be clear and sunny, super rainy, slushy, snowy, icy, you name it. I tested the Sense Ride out in all of it. And it performed admirably. First I took the Sense Ride on two runs in the up to 11,000 feet in the Uinta Mountains in Utah. The first was a sunny four mile dash up Bald Mountain topped with six inches of windblown snow and a brutal ice crust. The trail is carved out of rock with some tall steps as it zigzags to the summit. I appreciated the cushioning and stability of the Sense Ride on this rougher trail. It really is not designed for snowy conditions though. The snow at the top of the run was at least pretty dry, and I wore wool socks so my feet wouldn't be too cold. My second run was a 10 miler evening run through the west slopes of the Uintas and up over Notch Mountain. Slightly lower elevation and much warmer. Sections of the trail were completely free of snow and ice. The shoe does breathe nicely and kept my feet dry in dry trail conditions. There were sections of slushy snow, puddles and mud, especially on the far side of Notch Mountain. Again, the shoe is really not designed for these snowier conditions. I wore wool socks again to keep my feet warm, but the shoes and my feet were sodden by the end of the run. The tread is just grip-y enough to keep one running smoothly over slick sections of slush and snow over rock. However, nothing beats pairing with a set of Yak Trax for those smooth, solid sections of ice over rock. On this run those types of sections were sparse and I've done enough winter running to know to tread cautiously! Once I was finished with the run, I left the shoes outside to dry and they were dry by morning. My third run was an 11 miler along the North Umpqua River in my native Pacific Northwest. The trail ranges from duff-covered and spongy under dense timber stands, to rocky along the river, fairly level along the river to steep as the trail climbs up tall bluffs. It had been raining off and on all day, so rocky sections were slick. The Sense Ride's tread kept me upright, unless for example, one happens to step on a fallen big leaf maple leaf on slippery, river polished basalt. I'm not holding that against the shoe though. Overall, great trail shoe. It holds up to abuse and long runs well. The tread is just grip-y enough to carry one over small icy sections, slush and slick rocks. It dries quickly after a long, soggy run. Happy trails!
These shoes fit great the first time I wore them. There was no break in period needed. They are just as comfortable hiking and walking as they are running. I wore them on a variety of terrain and they did well on the road, sand, gravel, and in dirt on trails. I especially appreciate the way they help grip sand when heading uphill. The breathable mesh helps my feet avoid blisters . The fast ties are great for folks like me, who always seem to have shoelaces coming undone mid-workout. They are comfortable enough to wear at work if you're on your feet all day. The fit is average so no need to buy a different size than what you normally wear.
I found these shoes to be a good all around trail running shoe if you like a little more cushion than the Speedcross and run on a mix of trails and pavement. I prefer the Speedcross on rocky terrain because it has more aggressive treads, which is a downside when running on pavement, and want less cushion so you can "feel" the terrain more. The Sense performed well for both trail running and long distance hiking, so I think it's a versatile shoe. The Sense was comfortable out of the box, except for some rubbing above my heel after a few miles of hiking. The back of the shoe seems stiffer than the Speedcross.
Comfortable right out of the box. Lightweight and breathable. I would say they run just a little large. I like to be able to wear light and/or thick socks so that works for me. I love the quick laces and the little garage they tuck into. Easy to quickly tighten up for the downhill's also. I have a pair of Salomon Speedcross and find these to have a little smaller lug and a little less interior padding. The good and bad of that is I can really feel what is under my feet with these, they feel more flexible perched on rocks and roots. The pounding on my forefoot though is a bit painful. I have a high arch so I personally like a more aggressive insole. That being said, I love the grip on wet leaves, rock and roots, so for me, these would be great hiking shoes, just not the pounding of running.
I bought the Sense Ride for my first ultra race as i loved the cushioning, grip and performance they provided on a demo day. I was going to wear my Speedcross Pro 4 which i swear by, but was suggested this cushier shoe for the race. Broke them in once before the 100k and they delivered exactly what i needed, no change of shoe required! Thank you!!
These shoes have superb arch support and comfortable soles. Unfortunately they were at least a half size too big and the material of the upper was just stiff enough that when I walked the fold pressed into the top of my foot (maybe this would loosen up with wear?). The stretchy laces worked well and felt secure.
I don’t trail run but got these to use as lightweight summer hiking shoes and, man, are they fantastic. Since buying them a handful of months ago, I’ve used them in dry/dusty Colorado conditions for hikes anywhere from 5-10 miles (and a 14er) and in super wet/rainy Alaskan conditions where all hikes are steep and on slippery slate and/or mud. They work incredibly well. I’ve never felt so surefooted while hiking...ever! They’re perfectly cushioned while also allowing you to feel what’s under your foot and use your toes to help grip. They’re so great I bought another pair for when the first ones wear out! Note: These run big. I usually wear women’s size 10 for running/hiking shoes but a size 9 in these fits perfectly.
First off, Salomon shoes are what I wear 100% of the time on the trails. With that said, I got this shoe due to the excellent arch support I heard it provides as well as the back of the shoe is low on the Achilles. It's arch support is fantastic! The sole of it is extremely comfortable and overall the entire shoe is a delight when first put on. However, it runs large - minimum a half size large if not a full size large. I even put my insole into it from one of my other Salomon shoes and it didn't even come close to touching the front end of the shoe. I returned, got a 6 1/2 instead of the 7, still felt great all the way around when I put them on -- except when I took a step. It has a weird bend on the top of the toe box on just one foot that makes it extremely uncomfortable when walking around. I thought it might loosen up, I even massaged the material. Nope. I'm super sad because I love the feel of these but that toe box bend is a deal breaker.
I bought these shoes about a month ago and initially loved them. The fit seemed true to size and I loved the extra room in the toe box. Right out of the box I was able to take these on a technical 14 mile hike and had no issues or blisters. The grip was amazing in dry/wet terrain and the shoe felt light and responsive. I’ve taken them on several long runs and hikes within the last month and the shoe has started to deteriorate. The tread in the forefoot is nearly completely gone (I’m a toe runner) and the uppers of the mid foot have stretched making it difficult to lockdown my foot and get a secure feel on uneven or steep terrain. The more I’ve worn this shoe the more blisters I have developed. As I’ve have only had these shoes for about a month and have only put about 120 miles in them I will be returning them.
I took my new Salomon Sense Rides out to the trail today with the intention to break them in. My conclusion after 3 miles in hot and humid Houston was that these shoes don’t need to be broken in. They were the right fit with plenty of cushion for the trails. My ankles and knees were sturdy throughout the run. The best part about this shoe is the amazing breathability. I was drenched but my feet were nice and dry
