Neck opening is big but I have a solution!
This is a great jacket. I’m 5’6” 150 pounds. I originally had a medium when I weighed about 160 but it became way too big so i sold it on Craigslist (at a loss) after a season. I bought a small and it fits perfectly with my weight at around 150. Some have remarked that the neck opening is a little big, and there is no adjustment, so it’s true that unless you have a big neck to your body size, the neck will be big. I used to wear a neck gator, but that is annoying to do every time you take the dog out, so I made a “no-cut” modification. Here’s what I did: There are two holes on the collar that feed an elastic cord from the hood down to the adjustments. I fed an additional elastic cord across the back of the neck without removing any existing part of the jacket. I got the elastic cord from amazon (the size i used was 3/32 diameter, but 1/16 is probably better because 3/32 makes it a bit tight in the holes). I found an elastic cord feeder at Hobby Lobby, snipped off the ball end (see photo of this tool, post-snip), and I easily used it to feed the cable from one side to another across the back of the collar. When you feed the cable, don’t fold the cable over because it won’t fit through the hole, just wedge the end of the cable into the slot opening and the cable should feed through no problem - it took a few tries. I finished it with spring loaded elastic cord stoppers and some plastic cable ends (see photos). Since i used the 3/32 diameter cable, it doesn’t adjust easily because the two cables through the one small hole stay put, so i just adjusted it once and it stays, but i think a 1/16 would make it adjust more easily, since two elastic cables are feeding through that same hole system. It basically makes the back of the neck slightly crimped and keeps the collar closer to the body and this has eliminated the need for a scarf or gator. I hope future versions of this jacket put more adjustments in the hood and collar - it would make it absolutely perfect. I live in Syracuse NY and it gets easily sub-zero F and i stay warm in this beautiful and slim fitting jacket.
Warm jacket; but zipper quality issue
I've owned this jacket for about 3 years now, and it's excellent as a warm weather jacket (I live in -40C Alberta, and can wear this over a t-shirt and not feel cold). My one concern comes with the main zipper; recently, it has started to fail and not zip up properly. Some of the teeth do not close, causing the zipper to fully unzip when worn. This is obviously non-ideal and makes the jacket basically unwearable as it's not just a side zipper issue... (see photo for what I mean). For the price, I would expect this jacket to have held up longer than it has; not sure if I just got unlucky, but I am a bit disappointed.
Gore-Tex can't go wrong
I bought this jacket for my trip to Norway in winter time, I was looking for a warm Gore Tex jacket and the Fission SV did a great job, most of the time to walk around Tromso I only used two layers under neath, it was 21F, but for the long tours at night I added the Atom AR and i was toasty warm. In conclusion the Fission SV is a great warm, Gore Tex jacket just buy it you wont regret it.
More Than A Jacket
I am an avowed Patagonia customer. But I wanted to see what Arc'teryx has to offer in the way of jackets. I was looking for Dry, Warm, Comfortable, Rugged, Wind-proof, Reliable. The SV in the title caught my eye. The jacket is expensive by my standards, but I was looking for a garment that can save your life if the need arises. This jacket appears to have all the features I desired. I don't really care about the cost, I want a jacket that will save my life in extraordinary conditions. I want to survive wind, cold, snow, ice, hurricanes, blizzards, floods, snakes, vultures, spiders, children, irate spouses, and more. I think I found my jacket.
A tank of a jacket
This jacket is a tank. I have now owned it for over 5 years and still love every time I put it on. It honestly feels like a down sleeping bag with arms. However, its much more than that. This is such a great cold weather jacket as nothing gets in. I typically run hot, so I use this jacket for the coldest of days, but when wearing it, you feel solid. Dont get me wrong, I do love layering, but this is the jacket if you want that all-in-one experience. The best comparison I can make is like when you ride on your road bike for multiple rides, and then you switch to your mountain bike. You just feel solid, covered, and warm in this jacket. Love it.
Great jacket, not sure if the design has changed..
I love all my garments from Arc teryxs. I many peices already. Last winter my beloved Fission jackets zipper out of knowhere decided to stop closing. I had thoroughly enjoyed it for 5 yrs, with lots of wear. This season I decided to buy another one, being so pleased with my last one. Although the new coat fits great and the same as before, the insulation certainly doesnt feel as dense and warm. My older Fission has "Primaloft" and the new one has " Coreloft" insulation. I used to be able to wear my old Fission right up until the end of December until the really cold weather hit, so we ll see how well the new one holds up in the cold.
Best insulated Arc’teryx jacket!
I’ve had the Fission SV for 3 years now and it’s an INCREDIBLE jacket! This is the best winter/insulated/all around jacket that Arc’teryx makes (or made). The Fission SV is an unmatched combination of warmth, lightness, wind proofing, waterproofing, packability, large pocket storage [4 external zippered pockets (bruh!) that can hold (bottom pocket) an A9II + 24mm 1.4 GM lens, an internal zippered pocket, and an internal dump pocket], helmet hood feature, and great style (urban + ski/resort + professional environment). Bought my wifey the female version and a backup version for me since they don’t make this anymore (or it seems).
Great jacket, please add a better front zipper
I've had it for 1 winter and so far its holding up well. Prior, I had the Kappa (pre-Salomon) and loved it, which looks to be discontinued (please bring it back...the Koda is not a replacement). Agree with other reviewers, the front zipper usually needs some finagling and so I'm hoping it will last (-1 star). I'm 5'8 with a size large jacket and the arms do run long, however I'm likely not the ideal height for the sizing. Lastly, the hood can feel overly large when not wearing a helmet, not a huge deal. I've owned several Arc jackets and their quality tends to be impeccable, so I'm hoping this jacket is no different.
Warm and Comfortable
I had originally intended to purchase the Kappa Hoody but ended up deciding on this one. We live on Vancouver island, and I wanted a warm winter coat that also wouldn't get wet. This one has fit the bill superbly. No we aren't -20 or -30 but the damp cold can cut right through you, but not wearing this. It has always kept me toasty warm and if it does start to rain it also keeps me dry. It has become my go to jacket all winter. Haven't had it that long yet, but very happy with it. The only thing I am concerned about are the zippers, they feel a little flimsy, but have had no problems so far. Treat em gently.
So close to perfect
This truly is a do-it-all jacket. It keeps me warm and comfy in -15°C harsh Norwegian snowy weather, without overheating. And I'm confident it will keep me warm in -25°C. It's no match for rain and wet snow. It's warm, soft, comfy and hard all at the same time. It fits slightly large, just the way I like it. I love the look and feel of this jacket. It's 98% of the way to the ultimate everything winter jacket. The main thing I'm missing is underarm ventilation for those -5°C to +5°C days, and a powder skirt to ice the cake. So close! Overall, I would still recommend this jacket to anyone. It's really awesome!
