[Employee of arcteryx] I have been testing the Arc’teryx Atom SV (Men’s, Black Sapphire) and it has quickly become one of my go-to pieces for cold weather. The jacket feels exceptionally comfortable and noticeably warm, with a reassuringly rugged, wear-resistant build. I especially appreciate the synthetic insulation: I do not worry about getting it wet, because it dries fast and keeps its performance, which makes it a reliable choice for active winter use. The DWR finish is also excellent, shedding light precipitation effectively. The fit and volume are well judged for layering. There is plenty of space to add insulation or a midlayer underneath without feeling restricted. At the same time, the jacket’s bulk means it is not ideal to wear another shell or jacket over it, as that starts to feel tight and awkward. Overall, I am very impressed with the Atom SV so far. It delivers warmth, comfort, and confidence in mixed winter weather, and I will continue testing it on upcoming winter hikes.
This jacket has been great for those cold transition mornings. Without the hood, it’s been a very practical jacket for the morning chilly commutes, walks and hanging out at camp. It’s a warm jacket so great if you aren’t moving fast or it’s not too cold. Fit is perfect - I’m 173cm, regular build and has room for thin layer underneath. Was belaying last weekend where temps were about 5c. Perfect for belaying and then taking it off for the climb. I can’t wait to use this in the upcoming ski season or a sunny ice climb especially if if’s too warm for the cerium. Downside, definitely does not pack down well and is bulky when trying to stuff it in a duffle, compared to a down.
I have purchased many of the atom insulated jackets, both the sv and its predecessor. They are an excellent all round jacket when measured against each of your topics for review. The only issue I have is that you do not provide the stock to allow a choice of colours and size to be available on an ongoing basis. Both the hoody and the jacket are great products and one of my favourite from the excellent ARC’TERYX range.
Athletic body types BEWARE jacket runs small. I was expecting a more boxy relaxed fit, I wear a Medium in everything and had to go L to get a comfortable fit. That’s really my only grievance other than that it’s a nice jacket has 1 inner chest pocket and 2 hand warming pockets. I have yet to test it in anything below 40 F but once winter comes I’ll be sure to test -20 F with chill winds.
I originally purchased the medium but it was really big. So I purchased a small and I like it a lot. I teach tennis year round outdoors and the Atom SV is great down to about 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Below that I reach for my Cerium to keep me warm. I do wish I had gotten a hood in retrospect but it’s kinda difficult to serve with a hood on so I didn’t for this jacket.
Like the Atom Jacket, the SV(or "severe weather") is wonderful. They are pretty much identical from what i can tell EXCEPT that the SV has more insulation in it. I have used it in the worst and coldest of cold and it is amazing. I use it most often in the coldest parts of the year. I absolutely recommend this jacket
Toasty and very warm. Great piece for colder days fitting well under my Arcteryx shells: Alpha SV, Rush, Stingray and Sabre. Noticeably warmer than standard Atom hoody so pretty much can only have to wear a T-Shirt if it’s above 32F/0C. Shedded light rain with no problem.
I am 5 foot 10, 165 pounds and I purchased a size medium. The coat fits perfectly, looks beautiful. Seems to be of very high quality. It’s summertime so I haven’t been able to try its effectiveness in high wind or heavy rain. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase.
i had both version of this jacket, the atom and atom sv, and liked both very much. I would give it a 5-star rating if it was also windproof. I would buy another when there's a windproof version of this jacket become available, hopefully soon....
I bought for my tall BF…I love this brand, but the arms have been going shorter over the years. Would be great if you all made a tall size..or extended the arm length an inch, would be perfect. Had to return because was too short in arms. 😢
