Good basic GPS activity tracker
I got this for father's day and tried it out but returned it for the slightly better Vivoactive HR. This watch has all the key features you want in a basic GPS enabled activity/workout tracker and works great. It records tons of data about your workouts and syncs via bluetooth with the pretty awesome data rich Garmin smartphone app. However I wanted something which works better for hiking and mountaineering but is cheaper than the Fenix watches so I eventually went with the Garmin Vivoactive HR which is similar to this watch but also has an altimeter, GLONASS, touch screen, and is app capable. If you don't need those things then definitely go with the Forerunner 35.
Great upgrade from my old forerunner
I was a little nervous reading other reviews but I am thrilled with this watch. It is accurate compared to my chest strap HR and prior GPS watch and so far I have used it for outdoor running, walking and used it as a daily step counter ( prior forerunner didn't have this). I was surprised how lightweight it is. It is about the size of an Apple Watch and I'm glad I got the black band instead of white- it is actually nice looking even though I have a tiny wrist. You can customize the display for running etc pretty easily and the menus are fairly intuitive. Great purchase so far and I felt comfortable with REIs return policy it it has any problems going forward. Glad I didn't spring for the 235!
best user-interface i've seen from garmin
This watch is really easy to use and I like the way the menus flow - I've had other Garmins and this is by far the most intuitive use. I returned another more technical watch that was more difficult to use than one I had to replace. This one does not have a swimming/lap counter function, which is too bad because otherwise i'd be 100% satisfied. It was quite a compromise to keep this watch instead of buying a more expensive one with more bells and whistles, but it wasn't worth the clunky interface. Plus, it's so simple to log (start/stop) my bike rides and runs, and the battery life (with heart/pulse off) is great!
Much improved with software update
Bought this in late 2016 and it was useless. Heartrate varied as much as 100 beats per minute in a 10 minute exercise. Inaccurate 90% of the time, varying where I was in the gym. Talked to REI expert 2/24/17, got a Garmin software update, and now it is accurate 90% or more of the time. Plus, there are more features, including indoor/outdoor cycling (had indoor/outdoor running only before). It's more complex than before, but not beyond comprehension. REI expert also recommended tightly strapping it on, unlike a FitBit user who said hers had to be loose. Now, I am very happy with it.
Not what I was hoping
I purchased the Garmon Forerunner watch in order to track my distances with the GPS feature. After several hikes the distance that it said was a lot longer than I actually did [7 miles showed up as 11 miles, so it wasn’t small distance errors]. The weather option on the watch doesn’t usually show up unless you’re actually connected to the app in the background on your phone. The heart rate monitor was accurate and the clock face was easy navigate and read. I did end up returning this product as I need something more reliable in regards to distance tracking.
Great running watch
This watch is great; it's easy to use, comfortable, and shows all of the stats that I want and need during and after my runs. I wear the watch 24/7 and like seeing my steps and calories burned throughout the day. The battery life is good, too. I turned off some of the tracking options on the watch and a charge lasts a week or more. I run four days a week and like to race from time to time and this watch is perfect for me.
Great lower end GPS/HR watch
its my first GPS/HR watch and i really like it. It does what I want, distance/speed/hr (without a strap). I feel like the calorie count is off but I haven't looked into it much. One thing that surprised me is the length of time it takes for the watch to "calibrate". When you are about to go on a run/bike/etc you basically need to turn the setting on and that can take a really long at times. Not sure if there's anything I can do to speed the process up.
Basics before bells
Frustrated at multiple Garmin watches (I have owned almost a dozen over the years now) I tried this model because I just wanted a basic watch to track my workouts. The HR function never really works accurately and I have to remove/re-pair it almost every other week with Garmin Connect. My watch is always "turning on by itself" by trying to do activity tracking so the battery is usually low. All these EXTRA features but basic start/stop tracking of workouts is not worth the frustration.
Chipped in first week
I bought the watch to track my runs and some mountain bike rides. After only 4 days i noticed the there was already a chip on the edge of the screen. I work on a computer all day and only use the watch to track runs after work so have no idea where the chip came from. REI will not accept the return and gamin requires all returns to go through the retailers. Overall I was really excited having more data to track but overall am very disappointed with the construction of the product!
Great for tracking my walks & rides
Thanks to the salesperson at REI, I was able to purchase the perfect garmin for my needs. Have used it on my walks and will be using it Saturday on a 30 mile bike ride. Syncs with my iPhone and fitness app . No problems so far. Great for seeing who is calling and reading texts. Still learning all the other things it can do.
