Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good pack with some flaws Extremely comfortable pack, allows user to carry weight comfortably on shoulders. However, the chest strap is poorly designed and actually "pops" off because it is not sewn onto straps, but rather clipped on and is a pain to get back on. Came off at about mile 20 on a 100 mile hike. I took it to a seamstress and had it sewn on. Also, there are no straps on the bottom for a bed roll. Silly me did not notice this when I purchased it....thought they were standard. Another thing I had sewn on. After my alterations, I recommend this pack. Gregory, if you are listening, at least sew on the chest strap! Would recommend* * with the above cautionary advice

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great pack and keeps my back cooler I bought this pack because I was looking for a pack with the external mesh along my back to help with aeration while hiking. It does everything I want it to do, with only 2 "complaints": - Of the 2 hip belt pockets, one is mesh. I wish that they were both a waterproof material. - the straps that run alongside the bag, near the bottom, interfere with the side pockets. When the straps are tightened, as they will be as a general rule, it is difficult to reach back and put things in and take things out of the side pockets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Pack I had an Osprey 20 liter pack, but I needed something bigger. I was fitted for this pack at REI (size medium) and it's perfect for me. Attachments for my poles, sufficient capacity for my hiking stuff, water bottles and a zippered, secured area inside for money, passport, etc. I don't backpack, but I do really long hikes and this pack works very well. It comes with its own rain cover and the slightly raised netting between your back and the pack also keeps you dry. Good investment!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent hiking companion I have hiked many miles now with this backpack and it is a pleasure to use. Just like my other Gregory packs the weight disappears on your back. The pack fits a lot of gear and is easy to use a water bladder with. Your back stays cool and the rain cover is a plus. Thank u Gregory, keep up the good work!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Airflow and Comfortable I bought this backpack a few months ago and have used it on a few day hikes. It is a very comfortable backpack and I like the lumbar support on my lower back. I also really appreciate the airflow that you get on your back with this backpack; it definitely decreases the sweaty back effect I used to get from my old backpack. I only wish that the main zipper either went down further on the backpack or that it had a side zipper or an additional zipper on the bottom so that it would be easier to assess the things that are at the very bottom of the backpack. Otherwise a fantastic day pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Pack I have owned several packs and this is by far my favorite! My search is officially over! I loved the comfort of my old Deuter 22L but did not enjoy the more complicated process of getting in and out of the pack. I started looking for a pack with a zipper opening but couldn't find find one that lived up to the comfort level of my old pack....until I found this one! It's easy to get in and out of when I'm carrying camera gear or extra food, water and gear for others. The mesh pockets on the side are actually deep enough to hold my 32oz bottles. The hip belts are wide and comfortable with pockets big enough to fit a larger phone and other random items. The front pocket, while it does not zip, does buckle and, to my surprise, has a flap of fabric on the inside that tucks over your gear to keep it even more secure. It also adjusts from three different points so it can expand to hold quite a bit! The shoulder straps are very well padded and, most important to me, are equipped with load lifter straps. I haven't had to use the rain cover yet but it does have one...and it's pink. All in all I personally could not ask for a better day pack. It has absolutely everything I was looking for and I highly recommend it to anyone who may be looking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Day Hikes I have only used it a couple times, but love it so far! It's a little deceiving because it looks fairly small, but can hold quite a bit! It's comfortable to carry and fits well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Size for Day Hiking This backpack is a perfect size for day hiking, and even for 2-day hikes. The structure in the pack keeps the weight evenly distributed, making it an easier pack to carry. The REI rep who helped in the store knew all the right questions to ask to make sure I got the right bag, and he was successful. I could not be happier!

Does this have a pocket on the shoulder strap for easy access to sunglasses or other small item?

Asked by: Ubikwity
While it didn't have a sunglasses pocket, the Jade 28 I tried on in the store the other day did have a loop on the shoulder strap through which you can hang the ear piece of sunglasses or attach a carabiner holding other items. Glasses also would fit into one of the side stretch pockets, also suitable for a water bottle.

How do I know if I should order a small or a medium?

Asked by: Upbeat Barb
To find the best fit for the Jade 28 Pack you will want to measure the length of your torso. The link below will teach how to take the proper measurement. https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/backpacks-torso-hip-size.html Once you have measured your torso you can match that up with the recommended torso size for the pack in the specs tab.

I purchased this pack and have worn it around the house to try it out.  The straps rub the sides of my neck and so I think on a long trek this would become very uncomfortable.  I haven't read any reviews about this thought -- am I doing something wrong?

Asked by: mjoybelle
We recommend loosening the sternum strap so that the shoulder straps aren't as close together, which may move them away from your neck.

I bought the Gregory 28 jade pack.. Where is the built in whistle? It's usaly in a buckle, on a strap.. I have it on my REI packs,   Very disappointed, a whistle is a great emergency safety item!

I just purchased the women's Gregory 28. There is a zipper on the top inside pocket that faces the mesh frame and can not easily be accessed. It does not have a tab. What is the purpose of this zipper/pocket.

Asked by: PamS
The reverse, no pull tab zipper is there for the manufacturer's final assembly of the pack. This is not a functional part of the pack.

What is the best way to attach trekking poles to the Jade 28?

Asked by: Hikergrammy
We recommend attaching the trekking poles to the attachment loops close to the lid of the pack and looping through the points that are on the bottom front of the pack located near the 2 blue loops.
