great product - horrible zippers
I bought a ghost whisperer for backcountry skiing 2 years ago. Most of the time the jacket sat in my pack, but it was great to have. Packs small and very warm - exactly what is needed when storms blow in and it gets cold. The problem is that you have to fight the zipper everytime you put on the jacket. The zipper failed the second year I owned the jacket and I did not even use the jacket much. I took it back to REI and they replaced it with a 2015-16 model. Thank you REI!!! Hopefully, the zipper is improved on the newer versions or Mountain Hardware will hear from me. Too expensive a jacket to have a low quality zipper!
This has become my everything jacket.
I initially bought the hooded version for my trip to Iceland but I didn't like the way the hood hugged my face so I returned it for the collared version. I'm so happy that I didn't switch brands. Not only was this jacket perfect for Iceland (very lightweight, packs down small, water resistant) but it has become my everyday jacket. It's warm enough that I'll only wear a t-shirt underneath when temps are close to freezing and be completely comfortable. And if it get's super cold, the jacket is slim enough to easily slip under a heavier coat. I'm 6'5", 200 lbs and the L fits me like a glove. I highly recommend this jacket for anyone who wants something they can comfortably wear traveling and around town.
Warm Light weight Down Jacket
I bought this Jacket for backpacking purposes, trying to lighten the load. Today it was 17 degrees and sunny. I wore this jacket with a long sleeve Ice Breaker merino wool shirt underneath. I walked a mile in the cold and I was more than warm under my jacket. This jacket is all it is talked up to be and will be in my back pack the next trip to Spain
Crazy light and packable
Haven't put it to work yet; but it's shocking how light it is. Bought to replace a Patagonia down sweater for a moderate-weather trip since this is lighter and smaller (and hopefully warm enough). So far it seems fine. Probably much more of an insulation layer than anything else. Accompanying it with the OR Helium shell seems to make for a very warm and waterproof combo for the same combined weight as the Patagonia alone.
rad
Haven't whispered to any ghosts yet but this jacket is great, still going strong after about 4 years. Super warm. Like sweating in MN winter warm. Also ridiculously light and can pack into its pocket. Sometimes I wish it had a hood, but scarves/balaclavas fill that just fine. This thing is awesome.
functionality GOOD...durability BAD
First off I agree with pretty much everything else written here on functionality. GREAT jacket. Durability is surely lacking. I took this jacket on one ten mile hike wearing a chest harness holster. The garment performed excellent in 20 degree weather, however, areas in contact with the pack and holster developed what looked like friction burns and warping of the material. Highly recommend as a mid layer or outer layer during very mild outdoor activities. Garment packs great and is crazy light. Those pros come with some cons unfortunately.
Like wearing a furnace
A coworker was sporting one and when I commented on how awesome it looked, he let me try his on. I was shocked to feel how light it was, like how LIGHT IN WEIGHT it was. My car keys were heavier! I've now had mine going on 2 years and not only do I love it, I often take it off and let people try it for themselves, often yielding the same surprised reaction I had. Warm? Well let's say this thing is like wearing a portable furnace. Here in Chicago we get cold. I've used this with just a t-shirt underneath while shoveling in the +15f degree range and it was perfect. Sure I was generating a ton of body heat with that activity but still. I've used it layered with a t-shirt and long sleeved shirt for -5f degrees and it performed like, well, a small furnace. It's versatile: I've used it snowshoeing in IL, hiking in CA mountains, walking in Denver all with zero complaints, just cinch the waist drawstring to keep the draft out (or let it in to regulate). Suggest getting a rain shell if you may get caught in rain/sleet/thaw conditions because I wouldn't wanna test their waterproofed feathers claim out in the field.
One of the best things I've bought with money.
I was in the market for a jacket and decided to splurge on the best. This jacket had not disappointed. It's so light that it floats on the air if you throw it. It packs down easily and gets to be about the volume of a standard nalgene bottle, out smaller if you stuff it in a pack. The warmth is truly astounding. I wear this over a tee shirt all winter in DC and Michigan, and I'm nice and warm. It can be below freezing and my hands will sweat in the pockets. This is not meant to be abused, however. The shell will tear if you're not careful while performing certain tasks, though the tear I got was very small and contained by the rip stop, and I was carrying building materials at the time. My fault. Overall, this jacket is pretty close to being magic. It's warm, light, and packs small. The trade off is of course the price point.
Ultra light and warm
Only have had this a little while but so far its amazing. Very light and can stow in its own pocket and clipped to my bag when I don't need it. If you cant afford this top of the line down jacket, you can always save $100 and for Mountain Hardwares other jacket that is a little heaver and not cut as athletic, but has the same Q Down. 4 stars only because price high and colors are OK
Warm and very lightweight!
I've only tested this jacket down to temps in the high 30s in the big city, but it did keep me warm! The wind doesn't seem to be able to cut through it either.
