This light is a great deal. It is a little on the heavy side and if you keep it as brightly lit as is possible you will consume batteries. That being said, you can adjust the beam to a pretty low level rather easily and quickly. Also, the light has a battery meter that is great so you can reduce the lighting in order to conserve battery when it moves into a yellow reading. The weight is relevant for those who are trying to keep their pack as light as possible or who will be wearing the light for extended periods of time. I do some winter backpacking so lighting is an essential, especially when I cozy up in my bag to read.
This is an ideal hiking light- bright, lightweight, and easy to operate. It offers a very good variety of modes, and you can dim each and every light. I find that the light is both brighter and more pleasing than the Petzl Tikka 2 lamp I own. The lock function is great. Also great is the "powertap" feature to gain 100% brightness. The reviews that complained about the poor instructions and inability to open the light are without merit. Opening it to change the batteries is easy enough without a tool, and a 30 second job with a screwdriver. The instructions are more than adequate, and it's clear that some of the reviewers failed to read them. Overall, the best light in its price-point and class.
I bought this lamp for hiking and ended up using it for nearly everything. It's my go-to light source. The wide beam is excellent for moonlit nights. For darker nights or deep forest hikes, I'm all about the spot beam. I like being able to dial down the brightness in either mode, and the lockout mode is a must as far as I'm concerned. I'm fully satisfied with the Spot model, but given how much I use it, if I were to do it again, I'd spend the few extra bucks on the brighter fully waterproof Storm model. I chose the Spot initially due to the weight savings (one less battery). With that said, the few times I've used the Spot in light rain, I haven't had any issues. It is splash resistant. Just not fully waterproof like the Storm.
I exchanged the first one due to a flaky switch that required pushing it more than once, or pushing it to the side and not in the middle. The second work worked great on 3 wks of outings, but now it won't turn on. If I hold down the switch long enough it will lock, then I can unlock it, and it will come on in red LED mode. Holding the switch will change it to regular white LED, but only once. Next time I try to turn it on, its back to square one (lock, unlock, red LED, change to white). Its going back to the store to be replaced with another brand.
I bought this a few weeks ago for nighttime trail running, so you can imagine it's a pretty important piece of safety equipment. (I got the camo one so I can feel stealthy). I have been very pleased with the light output and brightness, and the ability to adjust where the beam points. I had read this was the best value for the quality of headlamp I needed to buy, and so far I'm happy with it (especially for <$50). 2 minor "issues" : It was hard to open the battery section and sometimes I feel like it bounces with my head. I'm not sure if there are more lightweight options, but that could make a difference. However, it does not fall off my head or into my face, so not a big deal.
I bought this headlamp last month to upgrade my dodgy, heavy, beater I'd had for several years. I really like the style, and man is it bright. The multiple settings are a little bit confusing when trying to push the buttons, but once you get the hang of it, it presents no problem. My only concern was the fact that the button turns on very easily, and I found that it had turned on twice in my backpack from gear shifting which pushed the button. I'd recommend pulling it out of your pack as soon as you stop, or locking it down somehow where it can't turn on when not in use. It ended up lasting for my 8 day trip, and the battery never showed signs of wear.
Just picked this up and I love it. It's a great improvement over the last BD Spot I had. Whereas with that one you never knew which mode it turned on in without directly looking at it (a pain if it was on your head already), this one turns on in the mode you want based on how many pushes you give the button. As for the reveiwer that complained it turned on in his pack, there is a lock feature which prevents this. If you're still concerned about this happening, get the Petzl Tikka 2 headlamp pouch--not only will it ensure the headlamp doesn't turn on accidently, it will protect it from getting scratched. As for "MacGyver" who couldn't figure out how to open the battery cover, the new Spot is far easier to open than the older version with its fiddly tab you had to push. On the bottom of the new version, simply pull up on the body-colored (the lamp's, not yours) tab near the hinge and off it comes. Couldn't be simpler. Great headlamp. Looking forward to many nights out cross-country skiing with it.
Took this on a 3 day trip backcountry hiking in West Virginia. This light is extremely bright and I used it on a dim setting for most of the time at the camp ground. It is very nice that you have the option of dimming it to exactly the level that suits you. You can also easily switch to red lighting which can be useful inside a tent at night. Can't speak about waterproofness or battery life yet, but out of all the headlamps I have had so far, this is by far the best one.
Wanted a light that was not too heavy but still plenty bright, this one is perfect. Lasted 10 days at Philmont and the light only became noticeably dimmer on day 10. One set of Lithium batteries lasted the whole trek and I wasn't trying to conserve the battery. I like the lockout feature and the fact that is has two beams, the full light and the "up close" light. Would be a great gift for a Scout or backpacker.
I work a night shift every other month and farm during my time off, so I wanted a good headlamp so I could work on my farm on a night schedule. I had tried a number of headlamps, but none have been as good as this one. I'm able to work the whole night without having to constantly change the batteries. I've used the headlamp for fencing, chainsawing (probably not the smartest thing I've tried to do at night), and brush-cutting.
