Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love This Boot My friend, who works for REI, recommended this boot to me before I went on a backpacking trip. I was telling her how I have a hard time with shoes, especially hiking boots due to having a wide foot but very narrow heel. I like a boot that is supportive, but not so stiff it makes me feel like I can't really move my feet. She told me the Ahnu Sugarpine is ridiculously light, fits my foot shape perfectly AND they don't really need a breaking in period. I took her word for it, and I'm so glad I did! Just got back from hiking with these: 50% of the trail was under water and my feet stayed dry. Yay! The only thing I wish they had a little bit more of is a reinforced toe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Pair of Hiking Boots I didn't own a pair of hiking boots, and I was about to go on a 5 day hike to Machu Picchu. I bought these the week before at my local REI, wore them for the first time on the first day of the hike and abused them with 24 hours of hiking in the next few days. I survived the hike blister free. They were light and as comfortable as my tennis shoes. I walked through muddy, rocky, dusty, and steep trail conditions, and my feet were protected and dry throughout it all. At the end of the day, all my friends were itching to take off their hiking shoes, but I didn't mind wearing mine til we had to go to sleep at night.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible from Day One I took these boots to Ireland without much break in. They were a dream! We were doing a couple 2 hour hikes a day in uneven terrain, plus lots of mud, puddles, rain, wind and cold. Even with all these things, they were like wearing tennis shoes in dry weather. I felt invincible. I don't even want to think about how miserable I would have been without them. I have high arches and for most shoes I have to use a slip in support. Amazingly, not with these! They were comfortable from the moment I put them on my feet. I'm an 8.5, but I ordered a 9 and it was perfect. I NEVER love shoes this much because my feet are so picky. But I love these so much!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great boots for walks less than 10 miles I bought these boots to wear on the 96 mile West Highland Way in Scotland. I wore them for over a year on short hikes and absolutely loved them. They needed no break-in. They are exceptionally light and comfortable and very grippy on slabs of rock. My only negative is that on this particular hike, with a lot of rough Stoney gravel and small rocks to walk over, the soles of my feet were very sore after a 13 -15 mile walk. I could feel all the stones underneath even though I am carrying only a light daypack. I might buy the next one up, the Montara, in hopes that it will provide more stiff cushion for the soles of the feet. Great ankle support, though!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved them! I bought these boots for a week long trip to Iceland and only had the chance to break them in during a quick 2 hour hike before my trip. That was all I needed, they were completely comfortable and lightweight for the entire week. It rains a lot in Iceland so I was able to really test how waterproof the boots are. Even after being completely submerged, my feet stayed dry and surprisingly well ventilated. There was one time I got a little too close to the ocean and a wave crashed down on my feet (user error) but even so they dried quickly and I was able to wear them later that day. The traction is also great as I climbed over many slippery rocks and surfaces there was never an issue. I would definitely recommend these boots!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing product! I bought this product to do a Rim to Rim at the Grand Canyon in summer over 2 days with a 40 lb pack. I did one of those things they tell you never to do, which was to break in the boot. Even not breaking the boots in more than 2 hours, my feet were great 26 miles later. The boots were flexible enough to be super comfortable to hike in, but provide substantial ankle protection and be VERY lightweight. I've since used them in the Argentine Andes where they are a pleasure to be in all day for work. This is an outstanding, durable, comfortable, lightweight and versatile product--my go-to for this type of boot in the future!

Questions & Answers

I'm planning to hike in the southwest (Arizona, Utah, Nevada) in the early summer. Will these boots be too warm or will they allow enough breathability to keep my feet cool?

Asked by: Sally
I live in hot, muggy Branson Missouri and wear these year round. They have worked well for me, I won't buy anything else!

Are these boots suitable for summer day hiking, say @ extreme heat, like Death Valley? or are they not breathable?

Asked by: Lizzo
I don't think they're very breathable. My feet get very hot and sweaty in them.

Do these run true to size?  Also, I have narrow feet and most boots are too wide.  Wondering if these are narrower than most.   Usually wear an 8 unless it's a Nike.. Then 8 1/2.  Thanks for any help..

Asked by: Divegirl
The Sugarpine Boots have been known to run on the narrow side. They will fit true to length.

You recommend a 1/2 size up and I wear a women's size 11 shoe. I did not see an 11.5. Does that exist. I do not wear think socks.

Asked by: Machelle
Ahnu unfortunately does not make these boots in a size 11.5.

Yesterday I was caught in a pouring rain and had to hike for another 2 hours to get to my car. So the boots were soaking wet inside and 24 hours later of air drying they are still wet. What's the best way to dry them?

Asked by: TATSIANA
We recommend removing the boot insoles and letting them dry separately. For your boots, letting them air dry in a well ventilated area is the best choice. You can use a fan if you find they are not drying fast enough, but we do not recommend using heat on your boots. More information on how to dry your boots can be found online here: https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/caring-hiking-boots.html

I'm looking for a boot that I can wear in the winter to hike and maybe closer to fall. I want my feet to be warm would these boots do that? Say for hunting purposes?

Asked by: Marquee
These are excellent hiking boots, but they are not insulated. If you are looking for something to keep your feet warm we suggest looking for a winter hiking boot that will provide more insulation.

Would these boots be warm enough for Iceland in Dec.? We have an ice hike planned, would I be able to put the crampons on that tour guides carry? I'm hoping to find a boot that is comfortable for long hikes, but also good for the glacier day.

Asked by: Hiker5
These boots are not compatible with crampons; it is likely they will be warm enough as long as you pair with a liner and mountaineering sock.
