Rated 5 out of 5 by from About as good as it gets Hats. I doubt any of you know me, but if you did, or do - you know I am a big fan of hats. I like the hats, I wear a hat almost every day, all year long. This hat stands above many, if not most in my collection. Stylish, functional, well built. I was on job site the other day, and it started out around 47 degrees, and sunny. Within the first 3 hours it changed to 30 degrees, and freezing rain (eventually snow). I was warm and protected in either, and felt comfortable in both, as it got colder, I just dropped the flaps and pushed on through. Between Oct and April I would not leave the house without this hat in tow. BUY this hat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Irresistable functional warmth, quality and style This heavy duty winter hat is very unusual in it's classic fedora style. Most winter hats hunker down on the head and ears, no brim, just wrap. Most brimmed hats sit up off the head, adding face protection from sun, sleet, or rain but leave the ears exposed. This hat has a wide brim and covers the ear. It looks doggone good on too! The quality is hard to miss; with beautiful dense felting it's a hat that's meant to last. There's a little pocket in the top of the hat and in it I found a guarantee and insurance against theft or loss - I mailed it in. The hat is packable too - stands right back up. Tilly calls their hats endurable...I can see why. Outstanding hat.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't like it I really liked the features of the Tilley Winter Hat II but was disappointed with the appearance of it. The hat was smashed in the box in which it was delivered to my home. I was hoping I could re-shape it but the wrinkled and creased look persisted. I returned it to the store hoping to exchange it for one with a good shape. All of the stock had the same wrinkles and creases. I ended up picking a different hat with less functionality but with a better look. I suggest that the accompanying information include viable solutions for removing the wrinkles and creases. This is the first time I have disappointed with an REI purchase. On the plus side, the service at the store when I returned the has was, as usual, fantastic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very good, comfortable bought this 2 years ago for my daily commute to/from work. bc it's Tilley it has all the features you could want in a walking hat. It's very flexible, extremely comfortable and dries fast. And, of course, it keeps my bald head warm/dry. the brim is a nice addition. but as far as the rear ear flaps, they are "ok", but could be improved; in 15-20 mph winds they are useless, and I need my earmuffs for added warmth. Like all Tilley hats they have an adjustable chin strap that real handy in high winds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oh, yeah - GREAT stuff Expensive (even on sale) but the quality backs up the price. Excellent material, and I think it will endure well. One thing: I normally wear a 7 1/4 in sized hats -- tried that on in the store and it would have given me a headache; ordered a 7 3/8 online and my noggin is happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like it! This hat is not for everyone, especially considering the hefty price tag. However, if you don't mind folks taking a second look when you walk by, it's a sturdy hat you'll probably have for a lifetime (and maybe even hand down to your kids). My 4 year old calls it my Frosty [the snowman] hat. And it would make a great looking hat for the snowmen we make here in New England. I wear it in sub-zero temps, snow, rain, sleet...you get the picture. It sheds water very well. The fit is snug without feeling too tight. I used the earflaps tonight while snow-blowing my driveway for two hours while a mix of snow and freezing rain was falling. Kept me warm and dry. If you're looking for a hat built to last a lifetime and have a dividend burning a hole in your pocket, I highly recommend this hat. Note that the hat is made of unstarched wool, so the top of the hat does crumple slightly. The brim is fairly firm and holds it shape well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Hat This is a great hat, is very warm without overheating in cold weather. The earwarmers fit perfectly just around my ears and back of neck. I want to point out that this version of the Winter Hat does not have the tuckaway forehead warmer like it says in the description. I may never have used it, except on rare occasion, but would be nice if it had the forehead warmer and the wind tether like other versions have. This hat is exclusive to REI and is still an excellent, warm and stylish winter hat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from all that you would expect Great hat, all that you would expect from a Tilley hat. Pricey, but worth the extra bucks if you can keep it over the years.

What is the difference between the Winter Hat I and II? My hat is pretty itchy (being a balding male I may notice it more). Is the II less itchy?
