Pockets are all where they need to be. The only bad thing I can think of is that it's a bit difficult to take out the water bottle and put it back in the side pocket without taking off the pack... So i just use my camel back and presto! perfect backpack. I did my research and check out similar packs.. ie. Gregory Z65, REI Ridgeline 65, and they all pale in comparison. You can also thank Osprey for the lifetime warranty.. If you ever get a tear or the frame breaks just give Osprey a call and they'll fix it for free, no questions asked... If you're in the market for a new pack like this one, do yourself a favor and invest in an Osprey. What are you waiting for?
I purchased this (my first real backpack) at a local store after reviewing many and reading about even more. The pack is great, generally, and I don't regret my purchase at all. I would recommend it without reservation. I did have one mishap - on my first day out with about #40 in the pack, the chest strap snap kept popping off the strap. I ended up having to duct-tape it down to keep it in place. Later, I decided this was because my entire backpack was canted (poor adjustment by yours truly). Poor design, though, that would cause the chest strap to fail like that. So - great pack, but never forget your emergency tape!
I went into REI looking to spend around 150 dollars on a pack. I instantly noticed this bag, and the pricetag. However once i tried it on i was instantly sold. I took this bag on the AT with me and it was the most comfortable pack ive ever worn. Im a 6 foot 200 pound man and like to try adventurous things in the mountains and this bag was perfect for me. While my friends were complaining about there shoulders hurting and there pack being uncomftable i didnt even take my bag off at breaks. also i easily carried at least 50 pounds and the bag seemed like it was a part of me. great bag i hope to keep it for at least 5 more years
I have used this pack in ROMO, GA, and locally here in LA. After carrying loads from 15-45 lbs, I would say the rating for under 30lbs is accurate. At first I bought the wrong size [...] Because of the curved frame,[...].If you are heading towards lightweight and dont plan on strapping a trash bag to your back and like the advantage of exterior pockets, this is the bag for you. Also, the vent system on the back works great, but I was unable to fit a bladder inside like some say.
I got this pack because my gf has the woman's version of it and she raves about it. I must say, it is pretty cool. It is comfortable, light, and keeps me cool. I know everyone says not to put more than 35lbs in it, but I think you can get away with a little more. My whole pack weighed in at 42lbs last hike and that was with hydration and food for a 3 day trip. It held up really well. It does kind of squeak a little, but I think it is just settling. The pack handled the load pretty nicely and distributed the weight on my hips well. Shoulder straps were pretty comfortable too, considering they are thin and light for coolness. You'll love the stash pockets, and the stretchy pockets on the sides and the back -- which are great for stashing wet clothes and trash and anything you can think of. I would buy this pack again.
I've used this pack for two hikes, a 22-mile weekender and a one-day 8-miler. Both times the pack proved to be comfortable over the distances covered, and the mesh back was excellent at keeping my back, shoulders, and waist ventilated and relatively sweat-free. Unfortunately, the addition of the water pouch makes getting things in and out of the pack a bit tight, as it creates a bit of bottleneck in the middle of the pack, and reduces available internal space. The main back pouch is excellent for fitting in unwieldy but oft-used objects. The lower straps designed to be used for tent/sleeping mat carrying may be a bit small for bulky rolls, so keep that in mind when packing.
I bought this pack due to the recommendation of a sales person at my local Clackamas, OR Store. I'm 6'4" and finding a pack that would fit my hieght and frame was proving difficult till I was shown this pack. I've used it everywhere I go, day trips, over night and weekends, this is nothing this pack can't do. I love its versatility in all situations. Its by far the best pack I've owned so far, and would look to Osprey in the future for my pack needs.
Airframe didn't circulate as much air as you'd think. Fragile mesh and weak nylon cloth wears out quickly around edge of wireframe. Rubbery hip belt and shoulder straps combined with meshy airframe suspension made for poor load handling when loaded down with 50lb loads of mountaineering gear... Absolutely rocked for lighter loads though. I replaced it with an Aether 70 for the more substantial load carrying capability.
I really like my Atmos 65, BUT I am trying to go lighter. It is very sturdy and can haul a good load. Dont put too much weight in it or it is uncomfortable to wear. I used mine on a 20 day, 236 mile hike on the AT. I started the trip carrying 50 lbs and that was too much weight. Hip belt wasn't comfortable. I reduced my maximum weight to 40 lbs and that was a huge improvement in comfort. The mesh back was great, one of my favorite features on the pack. If they could reduce the weight of the pack to 2.5 lbs I would love it. I have moved to ULA Circuit for weight reduction purposes.
I've taken this pack on numerous hikes spanning from two days to 12 day excursions and this pack has never let me down. It packs nicely and I managed to fit well over 40lb of gear and supplies into the pack. However the curveture of the frame does minimize the packing space but if done smart, one should have no problem in fitting all necesary items into the pack. Though i have had probles with the padding. It isn't the most comfortable pack. By the end of a 12 day hike through New Mexico it did a number on my shoulders. But all in all it truly is a great pack for almost any circumstance.
