Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.
IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I always have to have a wide width or go up in size, this was not the case with the Altra running shoe! They fit me like a glove, I wore them walking/running for two weeks. Still a great fit, no redness or soreness even after miles of running! The perfect arch and insole give superior support. The lightweight and breathable material offer your feet air so I was able to go the extra mile without feeling sweaty or have a heaviness/tired feeling. Great looking shoe, I wore them to worked dressed up in slacks, walked and ran for two weeks, lots of compliments. I recommend these great running shoes even on heavy days, they don't disappoint!
These are more tight/rigid/stabilizing compared to the 1.5s. My toes feel slightly jammed, and I'm keenly aware of the firmer collar against my achilles, though it's not rubbing badly enough to do damage. After a 3 mile run my feet are a bit achey, like I wasn't getting the toe splay room that I need. I have narrow feet, yet the upper is so stiff that I feel like a toddler struggling to put them on, and miss the flexibility and spaciousness of the 1.5s. I don't like the thick tongue, but I'm happy that they shortened the excessively long laces. Also, I'm not crazy about these color options. They're somewhat...matronly and dated? Trivial, I know, but for the price I'd like to have a modern and unique looking shoe.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It feels so comfortable to my feet like I am walking on air I love how great it feels around my whole feet.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Overall, this is a solid running shoe. The toe box is wider and perfect for my feet. My other running shoes cramp my toes and cause blisters....not the case with the Escalante 3. I would like more arch support. If you need more support like I do, I would suggest an insert.
I've been a loyal Altra customer for the past five years and find it difficult to find another shoe as comfortable for my activities and training. I got so excited about the Fierce Color scheme on these - more combos like this please Altra! They are comfortable for pavement running for me. I do think the sole is more like the 2021Torin and so was a little different than the cushioning I'm used to with the last 3 models of Escalante. But I liked it! The bottoms are built sturdier so the rounded portion of the heel doesn't tear away. However, I would consider this a different shoe than the Escalante. Feels like a Torin-Escalante hybrid.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have tried other running shoes and none of them have felt like this shoe. It was very comfortable for me to wear, whether if I was walking, running, on the treadmill or on a dirt trail. It felt nice even on watery pavement. The benefits of owning this shoe are comfortability, stability, grip, toe space, knee support and foot flexibility. I would buy this product and in different colors. I would also recommend this product. I did receive it for free but I do believe this is a great shoe and has versatile use more than a standard running shoe.
Altra has changed this shoe. It used to be one of my regular models. Sadly, my feet actually hurt from wearing my most recent purchase, and I had to return them. I have worn Altras for years, but I've noticed changes lately that have not been for the better. I heard that the company founders sold the company. In my opinion, the new owners don't seem to be maintaining the same quality, fit and consistency. And there is only one model left (Lone Peak) in the Original footshape!
Almost didn't order these bc of some of the negative reviews. I love the escalentes I literally have 3 pair I switch among for workouts, work (12 hr shifts as ER nurse), and even an old pair for yard work. Several reviews complain of the material being crunchy? No it's not, it is however thicker or stiffer kinda like the racers but no holes in the material. I like it better. Feels as though they'll last longer. But the comfort is spot on as it always has been. I did review it as being 1/2 size bigger, just as I've always ordered. I wear a 9.5 in brooks but have always sized down to 9 in the escalante.
I had to buy these because I couldn't resist the pattern. I previously owned the Escalante 1.5. This version definitely feels firmer and narrower through the midfoot. I hate that the tongue starts above the bottom two lace eyelets. This gives you no ability to loosen the shoe where the two bottom eyelets sit over the lower metatarsals-I definitely feel pressure there from the shoe. I've never felt this in any other Altra shoe-and I've owned 6 different models and over 15 pairs. The padded tongue does feel good and stays in place on me. I also like the more stable feel of this shoe. Not as much sliding if my foot side-to-side. It locks my foot in better than previous versions. The top margin of the heel counter tab is fairly rigid, but it hasn't given me any issues yet. Overall, I really like this shoe. If only the tongue extended down to the lower two eyelets-then I'd LOVE the shoe. I also would have loved the mid sole to be black. That would have been such a cool aesthetic!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] These are great! Super duper comfy. Been wearing for 2 months now and I enjoy these for errands, walking the dog AND running. The fit is wider in the toes to mimic barefoot running. Very light. Recommended for those who run on the street occasionally, though I took these hiking once too.
