Sizing Notes

Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.

Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:

Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.

Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.

Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

IS THIS SHOE TRUE TO SIZE? The product Features above will provide a suggestion if Altra advises you to size up or down in this particular shoe. If no such note exists, please order your regular size.

Fell apart after only 2 months of use

Really disappointed with the Escalante 3s. These were my second pair of Altras (first were the Escalante Racers that were ran into the ground with close to 700mi). After less than two months of usage and 192.43mi of running in these shoes exactly, they literally started falling apart. One strip of the outer sole is peeling off and of course was at it's most pronounced a few miles into a half marathon I had been training months for. The timing made worse by the fact that I just purchased another pair of Escalante 3s for my upcoming marathon. Needless to say, I will be checking the return period for those and will not be purchasing any more Altras for the time being.

Finally a toe box that fits

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Let me start by saying i am dedicated to Reebok nano's. I own way more pairs then i should. Picking up a pair of these Altra Running Escalante 3 as part of a product test i was very skeptical. Out of the box these are a great looking shoe. Nice contour great color pattern. They feel light and somewhat flexible in the sole. First thing you notice the toe box. Nice super wide toe box. Allowing your foot to spread out and not be jammed into an uncomfortable cramped position. Putting the Escalante's on they are super comfortable. They have more cushioning and support through the full foot then i am used to, i have flat feet so barefoot shoes are ideal for me, but surprisingly it works. standing on flat ground i feel like i am leaning back a bit but i know that's just my own ergonomics at work. Around the house they are very comfortable and could easily be used as an every day shoe. On the road and on the trail the shoe seems to really shine. With every stride and impact on the ground whether its pavement, dirt, logs branches, the shoe feels great as it grips the terrain almost as if it gets wider to give you a more stable footing. I have not had a chance to test longevity but on the surface these look and feel like a quality shoe that will last for quite awhile. Will these replace my Nano X2's? I will have to give them a more extensive test but i will say they are a close contender and will move to the front in my lineup.

Finally, A Shoe That is formed correctly!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] When it comes to fit and functionality, Altra's Men's Escalante 3 Running shoes are the real deal. At first site, I was a little put off by the style of the toe, how round they were, they are just not a typical look for shoes. But when I first put them on, it was clear, these were the best fitting shoes I have ever worn, period. I have wide feet, so the size of the shoe can say "11" but they don't always fit, the Altra Escalante 3 fit like a glove! They have the perfect balance with the footshape design that makes these running shoes stand out above the rest. Perfect for short or long distance runs with it's well assembled material.Iit's sturdy and very breathable, they really designed these shoes with everything bit of thought on functionality and comfort in mind. After enjoying these shoes for a short period, the style works, it makes sense! I love them and can't see me going for any of other running shoe from now on.

Cheap, stiff, and terrible

Altra has continued its fall from greatness with the Escalante 3. If you are new to the brand, I can understand how these shoes feel amazing compared to other big brand shoes, but Altra has lost what made them unique and attractive. These shoes are cheap, stiff, and overly supportive. I originally purchased a pair of the original Escalantes in August of 2017 and I still remember the feeling when I first tried them on: The original Escalantes felt like I was wearing a pair of slippers and walking on clouds. I didn't feel like I was wearing a pair of running shoes. They were flexible, wide, and supple and the top was soft, flexible, and breathable. They allowed my foot to spread out to its natural shape, and move like a foot should move, similar to the barefoot trend in running. But compared to barefoot shoes, the original Escalantes also provided enough cushion to protect my feet from rocks and gravel and allow me to run long distances without overly stressing my feet, tendons, and joints. I changed my running style, from heal striking to mid-foot/fore-foot striking when I purchased these shoes and was able to cut over a minute off every mile. When I saw that Altra had been sold in March of 2018 to VF Corporation my first though was "Oh no! They're going to ruin the brand." I immediately got online and ordered a second pair of original Escalantes before it was too late. Time has proven my fear correct: ever since then, the new and "improved" Escalantes have only been a worse iteration of the originals. I tried on the 1.5s, and the 2s, and compared to my original Escalantes, they were terrible and I sent them back. Along with the new, narrower "standard" foot shape, the Escalante 3s have a stabilizing ridge running down both sides of the sole, which causes the shoe to feel even. The shoe inserts are nearly identical when physically stacking the original on top of the new one, but it is these stabilizing bars that causes the shoe to feel narrow. I understand Altra's reasoning behind the bar - they were trying to keep your foot on top of the sole of the shoe. Altra tried different approaches with the 1.5 and 2 with their hard plastic bit running down the outside of the shoe. The originals were great without any sort of stabilization. Yes, your foot can slide off the sole which causes extra wear on the upper - visible by the holes in the exact same place on my original pairs of Escalantes - but the shoes still last plenty long. Each pair of my original escalates has over 1000 miles on them. The Escalante 3s are stiff and uncomfortable. I never encountered any hotspots or blisters while using the original Escalantes. With the 3s, I have had blisters and hotspots on the balls of my feet. This could also be due to the cheap insets provided with these shoes. After maybe 50 miles, I went to put my shoes on and thought I had gotten some dirt or grass in them. I took them off to clean them out and noticed that it wasn't dirt, but it was the insets pilling up and breaking down. I took out these cheap inserts and put in my original Escalante inserts with 1000+ miles on them, and the shoes felt better - no more blisters or hotspots on the balls of my feet. Unfortunately my old inserts didn't solve the stiff and uncomfortable problem of the 3s. The uppers on the 3s are stiff and have stabilizing bars through the fabric. Again, I think this is an attempt to keep your foot on top of the sole of the shoe, but the result is a less comfortable, stiffer upper. I used to rave to anyone I could about how amazing Altra shoes, specifically the Escalantes were, but I haven't been able to do that since the originals. I don't recommend you purchase these shoes. Altra, if you are listening to your long-term fans and supporters, please bring back the original Escalantes with all of their "imperfections" and stop your fall from grace. You had something near perfect and are running in the wrong direction.

Hello Paul, thank you for your valuable feedback. In the past, we called it Original because of how flexible the upper was, but the last has always been Standard. Since the new model has a more structured upper, we made the change to more accurately represent the fit. The design update offers an improved fit for your foot with our updated, sock-like upper material and added elastic throughout. Like the Escalante 2, this newer model also features our Altra EGOâ„¢ foam. If you find the fit to be too tight and you would like a more responsive Escalante experience, please try the Escalante Racer. If you are looking for a wider shoe, the Torin or Torin Wide would be the best options. Please reach out to our customer care team if you have questions and we would be happy to assist you.

Super comfortable

I love these shoes. I switched to the Escalante's five days before the California International Marathon, and ran a great race with no foot discomfort or blisters. My only complaint is the crease that has developed on the toe that others have mentioned. It's caused by the small little piece of rubber that extends up in the front, and needs to be addressed by Altra. Hopefully they fix this on the next generation. I would also ask Altra to make a version with a dark sole, since I wear mine to the office and would rather they didn't have the bright white sole. I would definitely recommend these shoes.

Facts are in, this is the Escalante.

I can absolutely attest that this shoe is a strong continuation of the Escalante line. The pictures here show that the dimensions are near identical to my old 2.5. I can't yet speak to durability, but the fit is nearly identical. I hesitated to buy the Escalante 3 for months because of reviews that discussed differences from the 2.5 and wish I hadn't. Those reviews are not accurate.

They've ruined the Escalante

I used to be a huge escalante fan... until I bought the 3.0s. In my opinion, Altra ruined the escalante- feels like a different sneaker- narrower, less breathable (feet overheat compared w the escalante 2.5), and less cushion. On top of this, the material at the front of the toes buckled and crinkled after a few uses and creases will not go away and make the toe box uncomfortable. I contacted the company regarding this issue and they refused to acknowledge that it is a manufacturing defect and refused to help at all. I expect better quality control and customer service at this price point. Sadly, this will be my last pair of Altras.

My new go-to running shoe

For the last year or so, I have been on the hunt for a suitable replacement for my aging final pair of Altra's Kayenta (which, sadly, is now discontinued). I loved the Kayenta's combination of dialed-in fit, nimble handling, and the perfect mix of ground feel and cushion level, and I've just been coming up empty with recent shoes from both Altra and other brands with zero-drop offerings. I cut my zero-drop running teeth with several pairs of the Escalante 1.5, so when I saw Altra's preview of upcoming releases at The Running Event earlier this year, I knew I had to order in a pair of Escalante 3s to check out. When the shoes arrived, the best way I can describe the initial step-in feel would be like reconnecting with an old friend, only somehow finding us being closer friends than I'd remembered leaving off. While the Escalante 1.5 hit on so many "plus" points that mattered to me at the time while I was transitioning to zero-drop running, there were several aspects of the shoes' design that, just being honest, could've used a little fine-tuning. Well, I'm happy to report that the 3 improves in literally all of those areas, and then some. Key items include the following (in no particular order): • Fit (Heel) - Just the right amount of cushion in the heel cup to alleviate hot spots/rubbing while also keeping the heel firmly planted. My heels aren't going anywhere in these once the shoes are laced up, particularly with as far back as the lace holes now go, which makes lace-locking a cinch. • Fit (Midfoot) - Unlike the 1.5, which felt a little sloppy and unfitted in the midfoot/arch area, the 3 feels vastly improved, with just the right amount of width to accommodate my relatively slim midfoot without feeling overly tight. • Fit (Forefoot) - Whereas the 1.5 felt almost overly wide in the forefoot (even for my relatively wide forefoot), which left me a little nervous with cornering/lateral movements, the 3 has just the right amount of room for my toes to splay freely without leaving my feet sliding around. With the 1.5s, it almost felt like I was standing "on" the shoes rather than "in" them, particularly in the forefoot area, and that is not the case with the 3 (see next bullet). • Fit (Upper Overall) - The 1.5's upper had more of an upside-down "U" shape which, coupled with the material's stretchiness, didn't lock the foot in as well as I'd prefer and wasn't very confidence-inspiring for cornering/lateral movements. The 3's upper is much improved, with a more sideways "C" shape that cups around the foot and a more static (though still just stretchy enough) material to help further improve the shoe's lockdown. • Cushion level - Oh, man, have I missed EGO foam! And for the record, not the firmed-up blend used in the prior two iterations of the Escalante, which felt almost Escalante Racer-esque; rather, the soft and accommodating original EGO, which had just the right amount of cushion and snappiness to keep my feet comfy but planted. On a related note, if I didn't know better, I'd say it feels like the 3s have slightly more than the 24mm stack height Altra claim, but I'll trust their measurements. I'll wear these without the insoles for shorter/faster runs while leaving the insoles in for my remaining miles. • Outsole - The 1.5's widthwise outsole pattern tended to wear unevenly and had a gap/exposed midsole foam in the main area where my forefoot would contact the ground. My gut feeling is that the lengthwise Torin-esque pattern being used in the 3 will wear much more evenly and provide better long-term traction. There's plenty of rubber underfoot, too, which I'll accept as a trade-off for the 3's higher weight if it'll mean the shoes will last longer (which I expect them to). • Flexibility - The 1.5 was highly flexible in all of the axes/areas that count, but after 100mi or so, it got almost "too" flexible, if that's possible? I'd expect my thin-soled "barefoot" shoes to let my feet function all but exactly like they would if I were, well, barefoot, while I would fully expect more "traditionally" cushioned shoes like the Escalante to have at least a little structure/snap since they have a thicker midsole and serve a different purpose - and in that area, the 3 delivers. It has just the right amount of flex to let my foot bend and rotate (particularly in the forefoot area) while not feeling sloppy. Hopefully this continues as I put additional miles on these. • Versatility - The 3 falls right into the same do-almost-everything category that I'd have placed the 1.5, in that it has the perfect amount of cushion to carry me through my longer, easier-paced miles while also being just snappy and responsive enough to handle faster-paced work. • Arch support - None whatsoever, which I am very thankful for. My strong, neutral feet have arches that support themselves and that just don't jibe with the arch supports found in another zero-drop running shoe brand's shoes (despite their claim of encouraging "natural" running form). In the 3, my arches are free to flex and flatten as needed throughout the gait cycle, just like they would if I were barefoot, which is a huge plus for me. If I had to point out anything that didn't work for me, it'd only be that I had to size down by a half size from my normal U.S. Size 12, since the 12's I originally ordered had almost two thumbs' width of distance between my big toes and the front of the shoe (which I don't remember being the case with the 1.5, which felt more true-to-size). Other than that, I honestly can't think of anything else I'd recommend revisiting with future updates. So, long story short, I can't speak to the not-so-great experiences that our one-line, one-star review friends below had (which I took with a grain of salt prior to placing my order). What I *can* do is speak to how these shoes feel on my own feet - and I'm a huge fan of them. My old 1.5s still hold a special place in my running heart since they're what carried me through my (equal parts grueling and freeing) initial zero-drop running miles, and I'm happy to report that the 3 picks right up where the 1.5 left off. Neither iteration of the standard Escalante is a race-tuned shoe like the Kayenta was, which I've come to grips with. The 3 easily covers the distances/paces I'm currently running, and I think it will suit most runners the same way. If you're a zero-drop running shoe aficionado who appreciates a just-right amount of ground feel without sacrificing cushion/comfort, look no further than the 3 - it's a winner!

Now I have to find a new running shoe

I gave this two stars because technically it's a shoe and the laces work. I've been running in Escalente's for 7 years. I feel like every update the shoe gets a little worse. I feel like the sole on my most recent pair wore out way too quickly. There is also w really strange toe crease that rubs my foot. The pictures are of a shoe that is about 4 months old and was only used for short distance training runs (no casual wear). Why would a company change something that was such a great product?
