I am age 79, runner of 50 years, original Escalante Racer in size 10 was my all-time favorite shoe, was sadly disappointed with Escalante Racer 2, which I hated. This new shoe in size 10 is very similar to the original Escalante Racer, maybe even better. I use this shoe for everything, walking, running (both training and racing), and remain competitive in my age group for everything 5K through marathons, currently training for my 8th running of the Honolulu Marathon in these shoes. Plenty of cushion, great road feel, perfect toe box, very stable, glove-like fit, not bouncy but very comfortable for long runs. Ordering my 3rd pair today to add to my rotation. Altra please add new colors and I will buy more.
I like them so far. As others mentioned: a nice, responsive, and light daily trainer. The upper could have been more breathable and more geared towards warm temperature. For instance, I don't think the mesh is enginereed in the same way the one for the escalante racer was.
I have ran in Altra for years. I also have tried all other brands. I have ran in the Escalante racer 1 and 2. This is by far my favorite ever!!!! Got the wide toe box and just the perfect amount of cushion and response. These are great to pick up the pace in. I am going to use the Torin 9 for daily runs and these for speed work and racing. I just got the Vanish Carbon 3 but have not ran in them. Can’t wait to try them also!!
This is my first pair of Altra running shoes, but after my second knee surgery and a number of sprained ankles I'm making the switch to the 0mm offset to take some pressure off my knees. I use them for weight training in the gym and light road running. They seem really well made, but I can't speak for the longevity of these yet because I've only used them for a few workouts. I wanted to leave a review on here because there weren't any yet when I was shopping for shoes. This is a no unnecessary frills type of shoe, and I'm a huge fan of that! They definitely have a ton of road feel, but not in a bad way. I'm not the biggest fan of high cushion shoes, but if you are this isn't your shoe. Foot strikes feel firm while running and my heel is very secure. The tongue has no padding and combined with the mesh upper they feel very light and breathable. Its a little like a track shoe on top with a firm cross-trainer's sole.
I've gone on two runs in them so far and I really like them so far. The stack height feels higher than 22mm, as I have the original Escalante Racers and there is more ground feel in those. The midfoot is snug but comfortable. Too early to tell, but they feel like more of a daily trainer that I will put a lot of miles on and less of an uptempo racing flat.
