Design Flaw
The first pair I bought about two years ago the front support strap separated from the sole of the sandal. I own a green pair that I bought over a year ago and I noticed they also have begun to tear in the same place. I like the sandals. I find them very comfortable but spending $160 on sandal’s that only last two years is too rich for my blood. I guess I will be only buying Chacos. They are built well and last a long time.
Terrific features
As a senior with high A1c who needs to walk every day, I have gravitated to Birkenstock - sandals, clogs and shoes. Zero foot, ankle, knee problems since the move to Birkies. The Altacamas caught my attention for two reasons: a footbed that will stand up to moisture (as in wet grass or light rain); and because I have different sized feet (both with high arches), I figured the infinite adjustability of hook and loop could be very helpful with fit/comfort. HUGE bingo on both counts! Plus the rubber bumpers give me a big sense of security for exposed toes. Not a camo guy but got used to that in about 30 seconds. Great product and thanks for carrying Birkies, REI.
favorite sandals X 100
I’ve worn rainbows my whole life. I swore I’d never wear Birkenstocks, but rainbows(like other sandals) don’t have the support your foot needs when wearing shoes that don’t let you have natural movement. IMO, if you’re going to wear a barefoot shoe, you want your foot to support itself, but if you’re going to wear a regular shoe or sandal you want the support. I had knee and ankle pain from the rainbows. I flipped to these and they’re amazing. No foot or ankle pain. The straps and cork insole molds to your foot and then is so soft. Give it a week or two of solid use. The fit is amazing. I’ll never go back. I did have to size down a full size. I like my sandals to be pretty fitted.
Rusted Metal
The sandals worked very well including great traction, however the rivets for the straps were metal and rusted on me. The metal was peeling off and tearing up my feet, so after having these for 4 months, they were worthless.
Workhorse of a sandal
I have been a hardcore Birkenstock aficionado for decades. I've of late been going through the cheapie Arizona EVA sandals which are light weight and work ok, but whose lifespan is too short. I am not overly enthralled with the chunky look of the Atacama's, but they definitely wear longer and take abuse. Love the water resistance -- though note that they take a while to dry out. I liked the velcro and not having to punch new holes as straps stretch on leather/suede/EVA sandals. Very secure. They are heavier, but easily got accustomed and had no problem with ill fit blistering or anything. I came back today looking for another pair -- definitely recommend. If a bit more refined look version was developed, even better.
Broken Feet
These Birks did not conform to my feet the way the traditional ones do. Over three weeks of wearing these caused me blisters and constant foot pain.
Meh
These did not work out at all. The bedding and straps are very firm; durable but not at all comfortable. I ordered my normal size and these seemed to run a 1/2 to 1 size bigger.
I absolutely love these and I hate Birkenstocks!
I purchased these about a month ago. I got them because I get contact dermatitis from most sandals. Chako, Teva, etc all the straps irritated my skin. I don’t normally wear Birkenstocks because they are the most god awful looking sandals I have ever seen. But the Atacama sandals do a great job of not looking like Birkenstocks. Since I don’t normally wear these I can’t tell you how they compare to the normal corked Birkenstocks but after a week they were broken in and were surprisingly comfortable. I normally wear a size 10 and the euro size 44 fits great. I’ve used these for long walks, short flat hikes and paddle boarding - they held up great. For the folks who think they are uncomfortable, try thicker wool socks. I’m sort of a rebel and wear these without socks and I think they feel great. I’m going to buy the version with the heel strap for longer hikes and faster water. This is a great sandal that’s holds up to a variety of activities and doesn’t flair up skin.
Nice for the sale price. 45 regular
I like ‘em. I almost love them but, the Velcro snags my socks. I pine for the old buckle days sigh. I guess Birkenstock feels that Velcro is more cost effective for their bottom line. I’m also apprehensive about the different component layers of the sole separating. We’ll see?! Oh Birkenstock you used to be such a good company until outsourcing and everything with the European Union. The good ole days
Awesome fit!
Has been a while since I had a pair of Birkenstocks. I liked the all rubber style. Takes a little bit for the foot to form with the sandal but they are very comfortable
