Light, flexible, comfortable!
I've tried various types of Keen sandals and tend to find they are too stiff and heavy for my needs. The SOLR sandal is a different animal! It's so much lighter and more flexible, while still offering great toe protection. They also play nicely with my wide feet. Last summer I used them to do short runs along a riverside dirt trail, then I'd dive in and swim downstream back to my starting point. They are flexible and forgiving enough for light running (or long walks), yet also light enough that I can swim in them without feeling like an anchor is strapped to my feet. I used them so frequently last summer that I ended up buying a second pair.
Runs a little narrow
Bummer - all I can wear are Keen's due to width. Have several different pair. Looking to replace my 11.5 Rialto H2's (weren't the II's). Only issue with them was that while usable in water, they stayed a little "squishy" for a few hours afterwards. The Solr looked to be a great alternative, that would dry while wearing quickly. But, within an hour of wearing, just sitting at a desk, my little toes were screaming from the compression. They are just a bit too narrow on both feet for any length of time. Perhaps if I went to a 12 from 11.5, like some of my other Keen's, that would do it. But decided to replace with the 11.5 Rialto II H2's instead.
SOLR Works for Me
Sometimes when I am wearing these most comfortable sandals I forget I have shoes on at all. So light weight yet so protective. The supple back strap keeps the shoe snugly in place without slipping or binding. Note: your foot does have to go all the way in before you can pull the strap up over your heel. My toes do feel completely covered but with plenty of wiggle room. Ventilation is good. No worries in the yard whether watering plants of going up grassy slopes. Fun to wear while walking the dog. Great for use on pool decks. I plan to wear them for shower shoes when traveling or if I ever return to the gym. I can't wait to take them to the beach soon.
Comfy, snug in the right way, perfect on the river
Kayaking on the shallow Shenandoah, the SOLR sandal fit well. It hugs well around the ankle and has just enough tread/grip for the cleats in the kayak or stomping around in the river. A rocky, and jagged, river bottom was no concern with the classic Keen covered toe and i had no slippage within the sandal, key when you don't want to twist or break an ankle just to wade around and cool off. The stretchy neoprene like webbing was very comfortable and not restrictive, but held a nice fit. Felt a little too snug first time pulled on, but after a few days in and on the river, they're just right. They dry out fairly quickly as well.
Fits but can’t get on.
This Sandal has such a small opening I have to stretch as hard as I can pinching my finger putting them on. I have even used a mason jar to try to stretch the opening. Then I had to cut a V on either side to see if that would work. Nope !! Once I catch my breathe back from struggling trying to put on. Once they are on. They don’t feel so bad. I live in Hawaii. When we went to the beach this week. I kept them on because I didn’t want to take them off. So no toes in the sand that trip. Was like Putting on small ski boots. I don’t have swollen ankles and I’m not over weight. Seems like a child’s opening On a adult slipper.
Best shoes I’ve owned for water
These are the best shoes I’ve ever owned. Sadly I can’t find my size or the olive/taupe color scheme I love anywhere. I’ve had my pair for about 4 years and use them often to hike along wet slippery rocks looking for arrowheads as well as walk in the water with them. They dry quickly and grip well and would love to get another pair just like the ones I have. The heel on the right one is starting to go out after years of use and abuse. Well made shoes that perform better than advertised.
Men' Solr Sandal
I have worn Keen's Newport water sandal since 2004 and have been delighted with there comfort, durability, and practicality for use in and out of water. i bought the newer SOLR model to compare. I like the texture of SOLR better than standard Newport canvas-like material. However, the sole shape in the SOLR is not as narrow as the Newports making the Newports more comfortable and firm-fitting. Additionally, I have purchased 5 pairs of Newports H20 since 2004, all size 10.5 mens with zero diffences in fit. I ordered the 10.5 SOLR and had to exchange it for size 11. I recommend Keen offer a "medium" width for narrower footed customers plus the "standard" width that is now manufactured.
Newport H2 Upgrade
I've had several pair of Newport H2s and have always loved their ruggedness, comfort and grip. My last pair started to rub my toe to the point that I couldn't wear them anymore without pain so it was time to replace them. After reading other reviews about the SOLR, I decided to try them out and I'm glad I did. They feel much lighter, they look less chunky and I love the ecological features they've designed into these. They also are cut a bit different around the toe, so I don't have the same problem with the painful rubbing. I've yet to put them through the same wet muddy trails that my Newport H2's excelled in, but so far they've performed well in dry hiking environments and at the beach.
Very comfortable
I’ve worn these for a couple weeks from fishing to traveling. They were fantastic on my trip to New Mexico and out in dry weather. I just recently wore them fishing on a local creek. In the kayak they were great. However when I had to get out and pull the kayak over the shallows, traction was an issue on the slick rocks and while pulling the kayaks up a muddy bank on the exit. Overall quality is great and I think they will last for years. I bought these for a trip to the boundary waters. Knowing what I know now, I would definitely stick with Keen but would purchase a different model.
Blister... but worth it?!
These shoes fit perfect, like a glove. My only issue was that both shoes caused a blister on the back outside area on my heel. What is funny is the area the blisters formed doesn't even appear to touch the sandal. I think it must touch when walking... But it's not uncomfortable or anything, so it's very strange! But... After wearing these and loving every minute of them and the flexibility they offer, I do still recommend these. I have worn these as water shoes and regular shoes for a couple weeks now and these blisters were the only complaint, and those are almost gone now.
