Finally!
Lifelong nordic skier with 40 years of experience. I have mounted the Xplore binding and boot system on a Mezzalama ski for the purpose of the Grand Traverse ski race. I am able to effectively ski up and ski down steep terrain within the resorts of Summit County, CO. With full articulation in the toe area, it is extremely comfortable over long distances. This is a great setup. Hopefully the boot price comes down a bit over time.
Not a good fitting boot
I owned a pair of these. Blisters on heels, and pinching across the top of the fore-foot. Doubled down with custom footbeds - helped stablize the heel some, but not the pinching. Had these in 44, which is my street and ski boot size in everything else. Ended up trading these in and getting some Rossi Xp12 boots - still provide the independent upper and lower tensioning feature. The Xplore binding system is great. The Boa closures on these Alfa's made me invest the extra $$$ for these as I have had nothing but good experience with those closures. But these boots do not get it as far as fit goes.
An awesome boot for hilly terrain!
REI's sizing is right on. I also own the Alfa Vista Advances and these fit similarly and when these went on sale for half price I jumped on them ordering the same size as my Vistas. Generally I need a wide last and Alfa lasts are not perfect but they seem to work ok. I saw some heel blistering which is probably related to the less than perfect fit, overtightening, and the need for some break-in period. The actual boot design is amazing. These boots are much stiffer than the Vista's and while I have not taken them on a lot of steeper terrain yet, I can tell they will turn the skis more effectively than the Vista's. They seem to be less insulated than the Vista's but so far have not had warmth issues in low double digit Fahrenheit temps. The boa tighteners are sooo much easier than the Vista laces too!
