As a big guy, it’s been hard for me to find a pack that is comfortable for me while I am in the back country. I’ve tried all sorts of packs out, and this one trumps them all. I’ve taken this pack out on several weekend trips, and have even loaded it down with with 50 lbs with beer and fishing equipment and it’s still comfy. 10/10 would recommend
For reference I am 6'4 335 lbs and I loved this pack. It fit everywhere on my body well and was really comfortable. My only "kind of" issue was I wish the straps did more to pull the top of the pack down towards my shoulder. Saying that my shoulders did not get particularly sore, sometimes it just felt like the pack was pulling away from my shoulders. I am excited to use this pack again, there were plenty of pockets and the water bottle holder was easily accessible and my Nalgene bottle could also be put away in the bottle holder without taking the pack off. I would recommend this pack and would buy it again if I needed to. Great pack!
Great pack for larger framed or heavy weight people. It is very comfortable. Only reason i gave it a 4 is due to the weight wish it was a little bit lighter. But hasp plenty room for a of your gear.
Order a new item and seem to have received a used item. None of the original manufacturers tags came on the bag. Also, I am 99% sure REI miss labeled this bag and sent me the wrong item. I ordered the s/m Katmai 65 plus, but when I measure the hip/waist band it is only 48-50 inches in length. The regular Katmai should be this size. The Katmai Plus should be 60 inches. The product it's self is probably great, but I won't know unless REI can make this situation right and get me what I actually ordered.
THANK YOU Gregory for making plus size packs. This is the perfect pack for both multi night travel and multi night backpacking trips. It fits me (Women's 2X) life a glove. Clothes at my size do take up more space. I also backpack with my beloved Labrador retriever. If I need an insulating sleeping pad then he does too. If I need a quilt to cover me then he needs a puffy throw blanket to cover him. If need food and water then so does he. The extra room is perfect.
This pack feels great, a step up from the Stout. That mesh back panel is fantastic on hot days. The harness has plenty of adjustment and expandability to get exactly the for you need no matter what your body type is. Organization is pretty standard with a few extra pockets than I'm used to but it all seems like it would have a use. This is a great plus size alternative to the Atmos AG series from Osprey.
It was time to pick up a new backpack as my oldest Son and I are preparing for 12 days in New Mexico (Philmont) in 2023. Really fell in love with the idea of a pack and transfers with wider shouldered wider bodied backpackers in mind. This is a fantastic, well thought through pack. Adjustable, comfortable, the load to the hips very well. Moves with the body very well and I found the ventilation between the frame and my back worked well. The hip pockets are deceptively roomy for quick access to snacks, trail gear, etc. I like the outside pocket for stuffing rain gear/quick access cold gear. Only thing I would say is to double check the hydration bladder hook; it didn’t fit my system smoothly. This is based on one extended weekend. A short break in hike in Dolly Sods, WVA. I am enthusiastically waiting for the next trip. For reference I am 6’ 5”, 325* pounds and wear a 52 L suit jacket.
I originally bought the normal Katmai 65, and it is a great pack but the padded portion of the hip belt felt short, and the pouches on the belt were extremely difficult to access being essentially behind me. With the plus size they have haven't just added more webbing to stretch more, they have redone the hip belt in way that works much better for me. 40" waist, for reference.
I just got my pack and took it out for its maiden voyage. Did a couple miles with my pup. The pack had 25lbs in it. The pack distributed the weight amazingly it felt like I had nothing on my back! I have big plans for this pack. A Colorado trip and many NH miles. I will keep you posted. I am 6'2" and 350lbs. The Katmai M/L Plus size fits great.
The ONLY pack that fits. Thank you Gregory for including us big guys. You opened up the outdoors for us. This pack is the highest quality. It's hold weight comfortably. Unlike most UL packs. It's rugged. But it you won't regret it....
