Smart little lantern
This is a compact lantern with nice diffused light and hidden charging ports. I think my favorite thing is that the charging cable is actually stored inside the lid that pulls up because it is so hard to keep track of those small cables! The lid does take just a bit of force to get it out and the charging cable does like to get in the way when trying to close it. It is nice that you can charge things with the lantern on or off. It would be difficult to press the power button on accident which will keep it from draining battery unnecessarily. In my experience, it takes two to three minutes on average to charge my phone a percent. After a few hours of use, mostly on the lowest light setting (which was plenty bright for me, even with no other ambient light) that included trying out all the colors and brightness and strobe settings, the battery indicator light had only gone down one (out of five). I charged it overnight because a full charge does take a while. Even on the brightest setting, you can look directly at the lantern without it completely blinding you. The different colors are vibrant and there are so many options since you can choose where to stop (as you hold the button, the colors change so there is a large range to choose from). The light is brightest at the bottom although less of a defined gradient than the photos show. This lantern will definitely replace others I have since it can do so much and the light itself is so pleasant.
Luxury item
As the title alludes, this is a nice-to-have luxury item only. It's certainly not a critical piece of gear by any stretch and basically aims to take the place of 2-3 items (you probably already own) but in one package. First off, this is strictly car-camping gear. Though Lander doesn't specifically say this on their website, it is marketed towards the weekender, petrol-camping enthusiast with money to burn. For the sake of the REI community, I'll just say it: It's too heavy to be considered for experienced backpackers as the whole thing weighs in at 1lb 4oz, which is heavier than some ultralight 2-person tents. In fact, three 5000mAh chargers and a headlamp weigh in a few ounces less (I checked because I was curious). So don't buy this for the backcountry tent-campers in your life. What the Lander Boulder Lantern does do well is serve a sort of luxury niche area-- it would be great to shove in a car-camping storage box (though my experience so far hasn't let me know how long it holds a charge), or even yet to bring on a quick overnighter in a National Park or any location that doesn't allow wood-burning fires. Some of the best features are actually app-enabled. I found the proximity "battery-saving" mode to be a bit lagging in it's response, but it's a good feature. Even better is the proximity on/off feature that turns the lantern off when you are >50' away. This is great for a car-camping kitchen and/or established bathroom area (however it only works for the person with a phone and app). The design of the object is not as sleek as the images show, as the bottom part of the unit is a rubbery material that loses the effect of a seamless molded plastic item. This also causes the light to be oddly refracted. Trying to hide the seems almost makes it worse than just acknowledging the shortcomings of manufacturing and materials. It's too bad because otherwise it's a well-designed object; but as it is, not quite cool enough to fit in the "who cares about weight/features because it looks so cool" category of outdoor gear. Overall, I don't think this is a great product. There's some real potential for backyard/home use, but that's not the intent here (and similar homewares are cheaper and better to use for that purpose). If you're looking for a gift for the has-it-all car-camping weekend enthusiast, I think this is fine; but I wouldn't broadly recommend it.
Do not buy
This lantern looks like a good idea, also the price tells you it might be a good idea, wrong. I had no issues with the lamp portion , it turns on, *grateful to be alive, but then it is the app/bluetooth, it just doesn't work, you have to pair the lamp with bluetooth every single time you want to use it, and whoever designed this and knew that you would have to do that, decided that the way to pair or should I say re-pair the lamp with the phone is by touching a super small hole next to the USB port, good luck finding something to insert there while camping, a lamp for which I paid more than $85 should not have these types of issues period, It's a shame sometimes you dont get to test things right away because its gear you bought for camping, and you dont go camping every week, and then its too late to return it and get my money back.
Awesome Toy
Most of my adventures require items a little lighter than this, but for the ones that don't... It more than makes up for its weight. This thing has a diverse range of capabilities and if that's what you're looking for - look no further. This thing ranges from power bank to party hub without batting an eye. If you're looking for a workhorse power bank/lighting extravaganza, you've found your dance partner. Enjoy.
nice lantern, clean design, sturdy
I had a good experience with a Lander Mini on the trail and around the house, and decided to get a larger one for van camping. The Boulder is easy to use, one button operation. You can cycle the modes and colors without the app. The button, like the Mini, is hard to press, but the upside is the buttons don't turn on accidentally while packed and are fairly easy to find by touch alone due to texture. You can't see the bulbs through the housing so it's easy on the eyes and upscale looking enough for the price. Colors are vivid. Kudos on the packaging, which is minimal, plastic free and doesn't include a cord- a bold move. I have too many USB cords. I just use my Xbox controller cable.
Heavy, but functional
My daughter and I love camping lanterns and were excited to try this one out. It is pretty heavy, but also very sturdy. Probably not the best for hanging from the top of a tent, but good for setting on a picnic table while camping. It took a while to charge, but lasts for a long time. I couldn't quite get the charging cable to fit right and pinched my fingers a few times. Overall a good lantern, but I would probably go with something a bit lighter for future camping trips with my daughter.
So versatile!!
This really is an awesome product. I love it because it's not just something you use a couple of times a year when you go camping; it is useful for so much more. Of course, we've taken it camping and it is bright enough to light up the whole campsite. But we've also used it on our back deck in the evening and even to light up our toddler's blanket fort. I also really love all the smart features. It's nice to have a lantern made for this century. Like being able to run it from the app is life changing. No more getting out of my warm sleeping bag to turn off the light in the tent - I can just turn it off from my phone. It's also super cool that when using it in camp, it has a proximity sensor so that as I get closer to the light, it dims the light so it doesn't blind me. And as I walk away, it gets brighter to light up a bigger space. Seriously genius. Love love love this light!
don’t waste your time
This is an awful product for the price. Feels low quality. The first one we got was broken out of the package. Then we tried for a second one…and you have to connect it to Bluetooth every time you turn it off. Overall we invested in a 1700 lumen for half the price.
cool lantern bad app
I bought the Boulder Lantern a few days ago (mid-June 2021), one of the selling points to justify the lantern’s value is the remote control app which works over Bluetooth. Except it isn’t working. The Lantern itself is great- except for it not connecting. It ought to be as simple as the instructions make out: download the Lander app, use a paper clip to press then Bluetooth button on the lantern, open the app and follow the instructions. Beyond that, instructions for the Boulder connection are non-existent. I couldn’t even find support information apart from an email address on the Lander site. After multiple tries, re-downloading the app, and trying multiple variations, sixty minutes later it still isn’t connecting. I’m tech savvy, this has been frustrating. I’ve contacted their support team and will update this review of this change. I’ve also written a similar post on the App Store page. I suggest shoppers go check out the other reviews of the app. This may be a problem specific to the Boulder model, but if you’re hoping for gratification by controlling your smart lantern from your iPhone, perhaps think twice. Smart Lantern? So far, NO. Side note, I noticed that another of their models has a firmware update utility but only for PCs, I hope that’s not necessary for this iOS and MacOS user. All the “dumb” functions are cool- light levels, charging, colors, strobing. The design is sweet. I’m giving it 3 stars for this reason but you can find more affordable dumb lanterns with similar bells and whistles.
Wonderful Lantern, Terrible App
Gonna split this review into 2 parts - the lantern itself, and the app used to get full functionality. The lantern itself is wonderful. Let's be honest, if you got this or are looking to get it you want it because it looks really nice. It's strictly a car camping lantern due to its weight and bulk, but if you're mostly car camping or using this for emergencies then it's a delight to look at. The battery lasts forever, and honestly I find that at mid-level brightness it provides more than enough light for a whole group. I found myself keeping it at the lowest level just for ambient lighting around a fire. Charging, both corded and wireless, also work well. Now for the gripes - first thing's first, this is not as warm as the product images and videos will show you. I wanted a really warm light similar to what you would find on Luci's solar string lights, but it's unfortunately a little cooler than marketed. Not a disturbingly cool white, but definitely not as warm as I expected it to be. Secondly, the button is a little sticky and tough to press. Not a huge problem, but worth mentioning. Finally, the bluetooth button. Why oh why would you make it only pin-accessible? Before I got the app sorted out I had brought this on a trip, and was stumped to find that I needed a pin just to establish the initial connection. Thankfully I had a safety pin on hand, but I can see that being a huge issue if you didn't prep it beforehand. Now, onto the app. This is real Achilles heel of this product. Lander boasts a ton of smart features that, for the most part, work. For the most part. The app is riddled with bugs - while the proximity features work, I've pretty much given up on the sleep alarm function as it just resets the fields every time I confirm the time I've set. The color changer can also get buggy sometimes, with the colors shown on the app not aligning to the color the lantern displays. A *VERY* important note is that color changing suffers as you lower light output - you can get the full spectrum with finetuned adjustment when the lantern is set to at least mid-level, but go down any lower and you'll notice the colors start to become more limited, with the change between each color becoming less and less gradual. By the time you get to the lowest setting you actually miss some nice colors (if you were, for example, trying to set it to a slightly warmer color, it just goes straight to red or orange). Not a fan of that. All this would be fine, but the app is just so darn unstable. Sometimes I open the app to turn on the lantern, and I can't even press any buttons unless I reset the app. I don't know if Lander peeps these reviews, but my god I hope they put some time into this app because at its current state it really damages the experience. If this sounds like nitpicking, remember the price tag on this guy - you can easily get lanterns with brighter output and longer life for much cheaper. A lot of the novel features that Lander markets rely on the app, and at this point it kinda feels half-baked. Would I still recommend it? Honestly, yes - the lantern itself is great for basic operations, and honestly it looks awesome. If you're looking to get this because of the smart features, temper your expectations because I have a feeling that app won't be maintained very often.
