Trail ready
I offroad and this is tough enough for conquering trails rated "most diffiucult"
Straps work fine for me.
Recently bought this rack and have used it a few times. Really like it. It is a huge improvement over the trunk mount rack that I previously used. My only design suggestion is that the vertical support could be built in rather than a flip down. I do not understand the comments in the reviews on the straps. The straps work fine for me. It helps if you push them up from the bottom, rather than try to pull them from the top. Seems solidly built and durable.
0 stars if possible
I have now had two of these in the past two months. The first one I used less than half a dozen times and the strap snapped up driving on the freeway and I had to pull over so my bike didn’t fall off. I replaced it with a brand new one I’ve used it now about five or six times and today driving along the freeway with a brand new bike that is lightweight, when I got to my destination the strap had once again flipped up and my bike was off the track. So I returned my second one today. The folks at the store said that they have not had any problems with these racks to date. I knew that they weren’t being honest it’s just not possible!
Hello Sam, Thank you for letting us know about the issues you've experienced with your Thule Camber bike rack. The description you provided of your bike straps is consistent with those caused by incompletely installing the ratcheting straps. They should be completely seated and "clicked" into place on the cradle assemblies, per the user manual. I reached out via email to provide more information on the process.
Makes bicycle transport much easier
The Thule hutch rack is great, solid construction. The bikes on my old rack teetered a lot, they don’t move on the new rack
two years, thousands of miles no problem
I purchased this hitch mount rack when I found myself with a new BMW X3 and a factory hitch mount. We own Trek fx type hybrids, and it works seemlessly. Have driven from VT to New Orleans and Hilton Head twice with no issues. Every ride at home involves the rack as we live at high elevation,. Bikes go on and off quickly, especially since this year I purchased a cross bar for my wife's step through fx. Easy to lock bikes with cables to the vehicle mount and easy to see out the rear. Straps are secure and solid after 2 years of use. Easy to fold down with bikes on for access to rear of the SUV. Moreover, it's a 5 minute process to remove the rack from the vehicle.
Straps are terrible
The bottom line is that the straps will not secure your bike. I bought this for my Trek Mountain bike as I love driving up into the mountains to ride. The straps are flimsy and cradles too shallow for my bike, meaning my bike would slip out on the road. I almost lost my bike multiple times and regret the wasted money on this item.
Thule camber 2-bike rack
This is a well-made bike rack. After a had a hitch receiver installed on my car, the rack fit perfectly.
Excellent lightweight bike rack
Excellent bike rack - lightweight, secure, and easy to attach and remove. Easy to attach to trailer hitch. Zip ties are easy to use, secure, and don't damage bike finish. Adjustable to allow access to vehicle hatch back or pickup tailgate without removing rack. No issues carrying two mountain bikes on highway and dirt roads.
Great Rack for Weight Class
I have a Mini Countryman with an aftermarket hitch installed and 3 kids who like to ride bikes. The max weight I can manage is 150 lbs including the rack. The Camber 4 offers a lot of great features and is very solidly built for something this lightweight. The levers for tilting to get into the back hatch and collapsing the bars to drive sans bikes make this such an easy rack to work with, it nearly makes up for the awkward straps. Yes. as others have already noted, the straps are annoying, mainly when you’re ready to remove the bikes. This is because the clasp really locks into the teeth on the straps and it takes some finessing to get them to loosen. I find bending the strap away from the clasp while pressing it usually does the trick. Getting all sorts of bikes on and off the Camber 4 is also really straightforward. The rubber rests seem to accommodate a number of different frame types with little fuss. Thule includes a couple of different strap lengths to help getting more unique bikes secure. I wish it had come with the rack locking mechanism but I picked one up and that helped a bit. I did notice that with a full rack, it does have a little play when hitting speed bumps or uneven road. That said, I’ve had no issues with bikes coming loose or anything else but I’ll report back if something goes awry after more use. Again, if you’re looking for a lightweight but solidly built rack for 4 bikes, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better one than the Thule Camber 4, especially for the price. Now if only they offered improved straps…
Strap System Not User Friendly
Had it installed today. Got home and could not undo the straps. A very poor design. Took me almost 40 minutes. The representative from my local bike shop helped me install and put the straps on. I reviewed the on line owners manual when I got home and according to the pictures, we installed them correctly. Trying to push the lever down and push the strap through. I will be returning and looking for an alternative rack.
