Don't expect any help when it breaks.
I bought this rack a few years ago. It is extremely heavy (and expensive!!) but despite that the latching mechanism recently failed on me. It dumped the rack onto the highway while we were in motion. I contacted Thule for warranty support, filling out their online form and waiting for a response. Eventually they emailed me asking for more details, including a picture of the receiver hitch on my car. I supplied that information, but they never responded. Shortly thereafter, they emailed me saying the case was "resolved", doing nothing for me. They didn't honor their warranty nor did they explain their reasoning.
Became stuck in horizontal position with first use
The components of the rack that secure the bikes, and attach to the hitch are reasonably well built. Assembly took some care and attention to detail as the manual is all pictures--it does help to have an extra set of hands. My major complaint with the product, and the reason for the critical review is as follows: on the very first outing, the handle that releases the mechanism to allow the rack to rotate up and down failed and the rack was stuck in the horizontal position. Something detached/came apart inside the pre-assembled main column that precluded the rotating mechanism from releasing. I ended up exchanging for a different product.
Far better options for much less money
The T2 pro is heavy, awkward to use and does not work well with any modern via mountain bike, especially anything larger travel the straps are too short for 2.4 tires and the wheel arch constantly rubs against your fork if you have anything with 36 or 38 mm stanchions. With an extra large average all mountain frame, it cannot really accommodate the wheelbase all in all it’s an antiquated design that there have been no updates on to fit modern mountain bikes, and yet they still charge well more than a premium price for a product that’s already rusting on me after two weeks of use.
Don't expect any help when it breaks
I bought this rack (with the extension to 4 bikes) a few years ago. It recently failed, dumping itself onto the highway while loaded with bicycles. The latching mechanism failed, tilting the rack down while in motion. I opened a warranty claim on Thule's website. They emailed me for more information, asking for a picture of the receiver hitch on my car. I don't know the relevance of that request, but I provided the information. The next thing I heard back from them was when they marked my claim "resolved". They didn't honor any warranty or provide any explanation. Then I got an email request for a survey about my satisfaction with their customer service. Can you say 1 star?
Not secure, damaged bike, poor customer service
The wheel lock on the front has come loose several times but a very low speeds without any real incidents. The latest time though, we were driving at moderate speed in a residential area of the city, with no warning, the front lock came loose, the bike fell and was dragging on the pavement being held in by only the back wheel at the bottom. It damaged the bike, bent and twisted things and broke the back spoke. This could have been much worse as we had just exited the interstate at higher speeds with heavy traffic. I reported this to Thule warranty service, and they finally agreed to replace the front arm but the replacement they sent was also broken and cracked. I reported this back to Thule, and they have continue to ignore any further messages.
Fantastic rack for carbon frames!
We got our T2 Pro X a couple of months ago after getting a carbon frame mountain bike that couldn't be safely put on our old hanging rack. This rack is perfect for both our mountain and road bikes! Features I love: - Locks to hitch - Folds up out of the way when not in use - Easy to remove and stow in the garage - Folds down for rear hatch access with bikes loaded - Option to use the add on for increased capacity Features that need improvement: - Added lock cores to swing arms for bike security, but realized that it would still be really easy to steal a bike off the rack, so always add an extra lock. (only reason for four stars)
Sturdy, heavyweight rack
This is a nice sturdy rack and very stable but it IS heavy (~50# for the 2" hitch) so you get stability but the trade-off is the weight. The directions are pictorial, which is OK but it takes a little common sense to follow them. The directions don't mention that you need a 1/2 socket and ratchet to put it together in addition to the Allen wrench provided. I'd give the rack 5 stars but am concerned that smaller people might have trouble with the weight of the rack.
Thule is what Thule does
Solid as expected. It sticks out farther than i expected but that doesnt cause any issues. Just so you know, it doesnt come with the locks.
A beast!
Excellent product. Great build quality and easy to operate.
Thule hitch rack
I enjoy it and easy put my bikes but its too heavy
Thank you for sharing your feedback on the Thule T2 Pro XTR 2. The challenges that can be posed by a heavier bike rack are understandable. This rack is made from steel as a means to increase the structural stability and strength, leading to a bulkier, but ultimately safer and higher capacity bike rack.
