I purchased the base to this rack about 9 months ago and took advantage of the anniversary sale to get the extension so I could accommodate my family on larger rides. I love the base rack as it securely holds the bikes and doesn’t allow any contact whether with the rack or other bikes. That was my motivation for upgrading to this style of rack from the swing style Thule rack. All that said, the T2 addition is secure and solid just like the base. It affords the same benefits of spacing to avoid bike or rack contact. However, it is super heavy and quite long as it extends off the vehicle another 2.5 feet. This doesn’t make it easy to out on or take off given its size and bulk. It is held together with the base rack with 4 hearty screws. I could only get 3 to align as the 4th wasn’t machined appropriately. Also, when the extension is on and the rack is upright the handle to drop it is on top. It’s kind of hard to reach and squeeze to release even at my height (6’2”). Shorter folks will need to step on the bumper or get a stool. Overall I’m pleased with the rack because it meets my needs. I chose the T2 because other 4 bike racks in this style were a single unit (Saris, Kuat). My intent is to only use the extension when I take the larger groups of riders. Otherwise I will leave it off and just use the base. For its overall size and weight, I reduced a star from the rating. Otherwise it is quite solid. I would recommend if you can tolerate these things.

Poor QC at the factory

I just finished installing the extension to my existing T2 Pro - what an ordeal! As some other commenters have written, the bolt holes connecting the extension to the existing rack do not line up perfectly so I had to go to the hardware store and buy a narrow file so I could enlarge the misaligned machined bolt holes. For the price you pay, this should not be happening. After 30 minutes of filing I managed to get the bolts in but I really had to crank them down (I'm a big guy) and don't see myself using the rack for only two bikes anymore because it will be such a hassle to take off and put back together again. In addition, I needed to use WD40 and brute strength to slide the two racks together because it was not a simple connection. Now that it's on, I hope it lasts. Thule - you should be doing better than this for a rack system that costs 1000 dollars when you add up the two pieces! There should be flexibility in adjustments and not trips to the hardware store! How about a QC check before packaging to make sure all the pieces fit together and the bolts line up? Too much to ask?

Prone to rust!

I bought this Thule 2-bike add on so I can support my family's interest to ride bikes at various destnations. It's great if you can secure this monstrosity indoors. Otherwise, the steel-based rack is prone to rust when exposed to the elements for extended periods. The powder coating is flimsy at best. No level of washing or rust removal could stop the rust from spreading. Over $1,000 wasted! Don't buy this rack system if you cannot secure the rack indoors when not in use.

Quality assurance needs improvement

Bought the add on and the internal handle connection was sent backwards making it impossible to connect. At this price point it should be without any mistakes, disappointment!

The perfect add on for our family of 4

This add-on was a breeze. The new added replacement handle shows that Thule listened to the reviews on QC, and they have fixed it. Installing was super simple, and being able to carry all our bikes on one rack has been amazing. It makes the whole thing beastly, but c'mon, it's securing a lot of value :)

Great rack. Terrible Add-on

Like other reviewers, I am disappointed by the add-on extension. I was hoping to be able to remove it when I only need to carry 2 bikes (most of the time), but it is incredibly difficult to take off and put back on. Even worse, the screw hole for the handle on the extension (which allows you to operate the lever to fold the rack up and down) does not line up with the screw hole on the rack itself. I reached out to Thule about this problem and was told I need to submit a warranty claim. Instead, I will likely return to REI and try the Kuat instead.

Horrible to assemble.

I am very talented at assembling things. This was the absolute worst and the instruction and diagrams impossible to work. I spent about 4 hours over a weeks time (because I would get so frustrated, I had to take long breaks) to assemble. I had to take apart half way thru twice to get it correct (at least what I think is correct). I have purchased Thule products in the past and had never had this type of problem.

Rack could be better

I would have given this rack 5 stars if it were not for the cheap materials they use to connect the handle to the internal mechanism that allows the rack to fold up and down. The overall rack is well built and sturdy, but the the handle internals are plastic and use rivets, rather than a bolt. Because this part of the rack has a lot of stress on it, going back and forth/up and down, it should have been made out of metal, coupled with a bolt. I called REI and they quickly sent me another rack out and sent me a UPS return shipping label for the damaged one. For that, REI gets 5 Stars!

Concept is good but quality control is poor

I was excited for this +2 bike solution but it has disappointed me in several ways. First issue was that the base rack tube had a manufacturers defect that prevented the +2 hitch from sliding on. Got a new base ProXT from REI (outstanding customer service - but annoying to shlep back and forth) and managed to pound on the +2. This is such a heavy rack and extends so far out, that I don't think it's safe on a vehicle with 180 lb. tongue weight. So - do the math and don't purchase this extension unless you have confidence that your car or truck can handle up to 250 lbs. or more on the hitch. Lastly, it's a real pain to take the +2 hitch off, so don't plan to go between 2 and 4 bike carrying capacity easily.

Great product - easy to install - but very heavy.

Installed this in 30 minutes. Key was to check and follow the directions from one of the youtuber who installed this. When you remove the pull piece, you have to press the screw down so that it is flush in order to insert the extension piece. Once that's done, it's pretty easy to put the extension arm in. After install, it is harder to pull but it does work and locks into place. Used it several times with no issues.
