I am on my 5th pair of Sense Max 2 (previously used the Sense Pro Max before the name change) and love this update just as much as the Pro Max. It stands up so well to my longest distances (for me that’s training for 50milers). I feel like the midsole doesn’t compact, and my shoes still feel springy even on back to back long run days. I like how the shoe is a little stiffer in the forefoot... I have hallux rigidus in my right foot so this shoe gives me the support I need without flexing my foot too much over long miles. The high volume toebox has amazing room for when my foot swells and my toes splay wider throughout the day.
Finally a Salomon trail shoe that fits normal feet. I ran 13 miles in the shoe straight out of the box to the trail. Really enjoyed the run in this shoe. Cushioned but responsive. Like all Salomon products, built to last. It was comfortable thought the entire run. Took a mile or two to stretch out a little and my foot to settle into the great insole. Really happy I made the purchase. I've been running and racing in Salomon road shoes and now have a trail shoe to match.
I've been running in the Sense Max 2 for about 4-5 weeks (<200 miles total). The tab on the tongue that you pull up for stowing the laces blew out last week, so it's hard to stow the laces on one shoe now. And the material around the ankle on both shoes has gotten a bit shredded. Other than that, they are comfortable shoes and a good balance of lightweight & cushion. I have run up to 27 miles at a time and they were pretty comfortable. The trails I run are mostly dirt/not super technical, and these work well for that. I don't need super stiff shoes or aggressive lugs, and I'm glad that these don't have that.
This shoe has just the right amount of cushion and stability for longer runs 10+ miles on trails, as well as on road en-route to the trail. The forefoot fits great - not too wide, not too narrow; so I don't end up with chaffing. I find these also last longer due to the stack height. All around a great running shoe!
I'm a physical therapist, ultra runner, and foot injury survivor. I have been looking for the perfect shoe for about 10 years now and this is it!!! Great stack height for cushioning, minimal drop for a Salomon (6mm), and great stability for hill training with enough flexibility to to allow the foot to move nicely. Altras do well for me for short diatances but don't provide enough stability for when muscles start to fatigue out, saucony omni iso does well for short hills but over stabilizes and combined with the 8mm drop often flares plantar fasciitis. This version of Salomon is different from the others. It is my Unicorn shoe. It is the only one I can wear for all types of runs - short, long, steep, flat, etc. They dry fast, moderate grip, super comfy even when the going gets tough. I wish it came in wide but it fits wider than most Salomoms Below is me doing a training run up Keystone to prep for my 100M ultra in Aug in my Sense Max 2W. Please keep selling this shoe!!
I live in southwest PA. The trails here are hilly, rocky, muddy, and full of roots. We are training for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail 50K in June. I feel fully confident in these shoes. So far I have about 8 trail runs in them and they have performed great over the gnarly terrain. The lugs could be a bit bigger to handle mud better. I love the lacing system Salomon uses, I was skeptical at first after having a bad experience with a pair of Terrex that used the BOA system. I cinch these down and off I go. They have turned out to be a great pair of shoes for me.
A great shoe that is very comfortable, until I pass 8-10 miles. After that, my forefoot starts hurting and I’ve had this problem recently in the Speedcross 4 and XA Elevate too. I’ve used Salomon trail shoes for years and have never had this problem until last fall. I mentioned this to a friend, and he’s had the same problem, so I’m not sure if Salomon made a change to its design causing forefoot problems. I’ve been searching for a replacement for my beloved Wings Pro, but I’m not finding anything that works for me in the Salomon line.
I’ve put in about 250 miles (not at once) in the sense max 2, the tread is still in great shape and the uppers are still fully intact! (No cracks or fraying). My only feedback is for the mid sole foam, and toe box width. The foam is just not dense enough to protect sharp/ large rocks after the break-in period (roughly 75 miles). And the toe box area could be a few mms wider, but maybe I’m just being picky? Otherwise, they’re still quite responsive, real stable and super smooth even when transitioning from rugged trails to roads.
I love everything about this shoe, except I can't wear. Yet another shoe unwearable for wide feet. Believe it or not Salomon, runners with wide feet don't only run in mud and sand. We need wide offerings in and do it all trail shoe. Not just the Supercross. Please Salomon, make some more wide offerings in shoes like the Sense Max 2. So let down, but I want to give you guys all the love. I know runners with normal width feet will Love this shoe, so I will recommend for them, just not me and my fellow wide foot runners.
Hi Neal and thanks for the review. Your feedback is appreciated and this will be forwarded to our development team, Ultimately it seems that perhaps the fit of this model didn't quite suit you. We are however sorry that this missed the mark for you, but we thank you for taking the time to write the review and also included positives for the product also. - Thanks
Excellent for summer running. Nice balance and no off pressure points. Good grip and able to transition well from roads to trails, making this my favorite shoe for hitting the trails from my front door. Only down side is that it doesn't have as great of grip when it starts to get wet. Support was good for 20+ milers for the first 250 miles, then retired down to shorter runs after that.
