Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

Very warm and comfortable

This is a very warm bag I took it out the weekend after I received it to give it a test run in 14° it ended up being 8° and I stayed very warm (I get cold very easy) and comfortable the entire night. The bag stuffs very nicely (10X19) into the accompanied sack and will compress to nearly half that length. Excellent purchase!!

Solid Overall 4.5 Stars

This a really good bag overall. I took it out snow camping in the Oregon cascades. I slept in a snow shelter wearing long underwear with some socks and had no problems with cold. I had the REI Air Rail sleeping pad for insulation as well. So as far as the cold is concerned it exceeded my expectations in that regard. My 2 problems with it are that it's bulky and relatively heavy. For the price though you can't complain. If you don't mind some bulk and weight it's totally worth it for those cold nights.

Incredible value.

Purchased for a three-night winter steelhead trip on the Deschutes River. Temps the first night dipped to 5 degrees. I slept perfectly — warm, comfortable and with room to easily roll over or readjust. The collar, hood and pockets were beautifully positioned. The zipper worked smoothly and without effort. For this type of trip, I cannot recommend this bag enough. At 6' 3" and about 190, I purchased the long, large. I liked having the extra room. Given its size and weight, even when compressed, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this bag for technical backpacking trips. But for float trips, car trips or long weekends in cold country, it's a perfect synthetic bag. The price is unbelievable for the quality. Buy it.

Big warm bag

This bag is ridiculously warm. It's also insanely comfortable because of the liner, size, and hood arrangement. I have taken it on several backpacking trips only because by some miracle I was able to squeeze it into my old backpacks. But now I want to get a nice new backpack, but it won't fit into any of the ones I want. So now I probably have to get a new bag :( I really would not recommend this for backpacking. But it's amazing for car camping.

Great bag for the price, with a few caveats

So I bought this for a winter camping trip the other day, sleeping on snow packed ground (no cots). I used a single thermarest inflatable pad as the ground insulation (r2.6) and never got cold once in -5 to 15deg nights. For the money, as a synthetic bag, it's great, very warm, and I have no complaints about it's performance. We slept in a teepee and I woke up with frozen puddles of water on the outside top of the bag and I never felt the cold from them on the inside (slept like a baby in only my long underwear and no socks. That said... It doesn't seem to include a storage sack (all my other Marmots came with a mesh bag, I am going to check with REI today when I go back in to see if maybe mine was just missing it). Additionally, the compression sack it comes with, while it works, is a big bigger than it needs to be. I have a slightly smaller diameter stuff sack that I used just fine, so if you have dimensional requirements, make sure you can fit it in the sack you need first. It's a bear to get stuffed but once it, it's fine. Upon coming out, though, it lofted fully in minutes and I had no issues. Finally this bag is HEAVY for a backpacking or mountaineering pack (~5lbs and change). If you care about weight, this is not the bag for you. BUT, for the price, you have to decide if double the price or more is worth it to save a lbs. For me, at 220lbs, an extra pound of bag weight is inconsequential to me, and knwing it's so warm means in most cases I can still make it with a single insulating pag, which break even on weight and still saves me some $$$$. The bag is not perfect by any stretch, but to get a proven 0deg bag for $149 is **AMAZING**.

Excellent design, super warm, great value.

Bought six of these to take my kids winter camping on the Great Wall of China. Dropped to 8 degrees, all our water froze, and we were all nice and toasty. Love the design with the roomy toe box and double zippers. Great compression sacks too. Love everything about these bags.

Wow that's warm!

Upgraded from an ALPS brand bag rated at 20 degrees, this bag is amazing. Super warm in every condition I've attempted so far, and very impressed with the craftsmanship. Zippers are amazing, love the ergonomic foot. Best sleeping bag I've ever owned.

Pacific Northwest Bag

I bought this bag because I'm always camping in the Cascades in the Pacific Northwest and things tend to get wet no matter what you do; because of the dew point and the lack of evaporation; rate of evaporation is slow or nonexistent do to the temperature and humidity. Especially during the winter and spring. With that said **----this thing is a champ under those conditions.----** I used it during January and February when the temperature was below freezing as well as later in the season when the wetness just seeps into everything when the temperature drops up and down through the dew point over and over again. I buy a lot of base camp stuff so the size doesn't bother me. I usually carry my gear in a Northface XXL Basecamp backpack. My Thermarest Mondo King 3D pad probably helped in the performance of this sleeping bag.

Great bag for cold nights

Used this bag for the first time at 12,000ft and below freezing temps and it was great! Plenty of room and kept me nice and warms even though I was sleeping on snow. I'm actually a woman and bought this bag because there was a $200 difference between the two and was a little worried it wouldnt work but it was great!

Quality cold weather bag

Purchased this bag in anticipation of cold weather tent camping. It did not disappoint. Had several days in the mid 20's °F. I was toasty all night. The zipper construction is superior, it does not get tangled with the fabric. Full mummy will leave just a slot for breathing so your whole head stays warm.
