Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

Lightweight & Warm Sleeping Bag

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Very light and warm sleeping bag for what I need when I go camping. I love how I can unzip the main zipper and side zip all the way to use as a blanket. I enjoy having the internal pocket for my phone / flashlight so I know where it is in the middle of the night. Comes with a compression sack & storage bag. The stitching / construction of the bag are very well constructed.

Camping

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve been using the Marmot HiberNest Down 30° Sleeping Bag for a few trips now, and I’m honestly really happy with it. It’s super lightweight and packs down small, which makes a big difference when I’m trying to keep my bag from getting too bulky. It kept me warm on cooler nights (around the 30s), and I like that it feels snug without being too tight. The material feels good quality, and I didn’t wake up cold or uncomfortable. I wouldn’t use it for super freezing temperatures, but for regular camping and 3-season use, it does exactly what I need. Overall, I think it’s a great buy for the price and definitely something I’ll keep using.
