[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been buying Marmot as much as possible since I was a teenager. I'm old now. My kids are starting to need good gear now so I recently purchased a Helium for my son. It might be even better than the bag I used to cyclotour for a few years in the Americas. Quality over the years may have improved! I know this will be the last bag he really needs until he passes the Marmot torch to his friends, girlfriends, wives and kids. If you buy a Marmot and it is still going after over a thousand eight-hour sleeps in countless climates, the zipper keeps going after more than 5,000 zips. You tend to want to stay with Marmot.
I've had a Helium for a year or more and just love the soft silky feel, plus it does a great job of keeping me warm. When it hits about 20 I need to put a blanket or something on top, but I sleep really cold, so I think a normal person would be comfy at a lower temp. I love this thing so much I was awake one night thinking about what I would do if I wore the darn thing out (not likely, I have Marmot bags from the 1990s that still work fine), so I decided to buy a second one for a backup. Some people like having extra jugs of water and cans of food in their basement for emergencies, but with a second Helium, I think I can weather about anything now, and I sleep like a baby. This is the most comfy and luxurious feeling bag I've ever owned, and I'm a sleeping bag junky. I have several Marmots (including a newish Hydrogen and Trestles, along with an old Raging Inferno), several North Face, and a couple of more generic brands, not to mention the ones I've given away. Some women buy shoes, I buy sleeping bags. I love this bag.
I took this bag on my 2016 Appalachian Trail thru-hike and with a silk liner I stayed warm in March / April throughout the Smokies. Great bag. Just zip it up and down carefully or you will snag the material and tear it.
Used on Shasta in May -- Was perfect for 20-30 degree weather -- very warm, very light, and good price point in this category.
Been using this bag for about 4 years, mainly summer to early fall backpacking trips in the sierras. I bought it due to great reviews and excellent weight to warmth ratio. No complaints about the weight, but I'd trade a few more ounces for a bit more warmth if I could go back and purchase again. I'm 5'10 male 165 lbs and it fits impeccably with comfy hood. It has always gotten me by, but many nights in the 20s to low 30s have definitely resulted in a chilly sleep with cold feet. Nice construction and a fantastic lightweight bag for mid 30s and up backpacking, but I'd invest in a slightly heavier bag with more down if spending a good amount of time above 10k'.
Simply the best! Bought the helium long back in 2006 and I’ve slept an average of 30 nights a year, the bag has a few patches here and there but is still going strong and performs like new! However I’ve gained a little shoulder width in the last years and find the bag too tight so I gave the helium to my wife who loves it. I’m in the market to buy another one just wish Marmot would make the long version a little wider add interior neck baffles.
I just completed a first backpack trip with my new Helium. The temperatures dropped into the high 20's with strong winds. The bag was comfortable in tent with long johns and cap but I would put on more clothes if colder. The bag is a perfect three-season balance between weight and warmth. The Nautilus hood is great and at 6'1", the regular bag just fits me, thanks to the ergonomic foot-box design. I can't imagine a better balanced bag with 800 fill ingredients for weight and warmth. The stuff sack could be a bit larger to more easily conform to the interior of my pack and for easier stuffing.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Purchased this bag for a mountain hunt in Alaska this past August. It snowed almost every night and rained every day. I chose this bag to save on weight, so within the bag I wore water repellent down coat (hooded) and pants. I noted the bag continually picked up humidity as the trip proceeded with some loss of heat retention. Overall, I managed to stay relatively warm, especially when extra care was taken to prevent wind from whipping through the tent. I used a minimal R-value ~3 foam pad. Overall, am happy with the performance of the bag and would bring it for another mountain adventure.
I purchased 2 helium sleeping bags in 2010. One long for me and one female specific for my wife. They are incredibly comfortable, warm, and lightweight. I slept on just a tarp without a tent and slept in this bag for around a year while I traveled around the USA. It was surprisingly tough, especially for how silky and soft it feels. I would purchase these bags over and over and over again. Thanks marmot!
This bag is an absolute winner. Cheaper than most true ultralight bags, this thing is still pretty light at just over 2lbs and it still packs down small. It's got a great amount of loft, the water resistant (Down Defender) treated goose down worked great and still kept me warm while sleeping in super damp conditions in a lean-to. Mist and rain settled on the bag but did not soak through. I normally sleep cold and this was the perfect upgrade from a 20 degree bag; the EN limit is 10.4, which is actually at least 10 degrees warmer than most 20 degree bags. At around freezing temp I was even a bit hot and slept without base layers. The second side zip was useful for venting out some heat. I'm about 6ft and it was really comfortable and spacious with lots of shoulder room and a big foot box in size Reg, any taller and I would go with the Long. I think the Helium strikes a meaningful balance by being more durable (30D nylon), warmer, less constricting and slightly less expensive than most ultralight bags for just a few extra ounces in your pack. Definitely the perfect bag for me.
