Just what I wanted
I got this to go over the back of my tear drop camper. I wanted a canopy that was easy to put up. I am female 5' 1" and not very strong. Except for the two short poles I put this up by my self. It weighs almost 12 pounds but compared to other canopies at 30 to 40 pounds it is easy to manage. I like that it comes with one solid side so you can turn it to face on coming rain. It will also fit over most picnic tables.
Worth the money
I had one of those Kelty Sun Shades and a pole broke the first time out. Got a new pole and same thing happened again. So when I saw this I spend the money and it was worth it all the way. Held up perfect in strong wind gusts, kept everything dry in a short down pour, great sun protection oven the entire picnic table and super easy to set up. Watch the video on TNF website to see all the features but they came in handy. We used the gear lofts on the sides to air dry our dish with no issues. The lantern strap was strong enough to hold all weekend long. The quality is great never going back to a Kelty product again.
Must-have Shelter
This is the 4th camping shelter I've owned - it is far better than the other 3 and worth every penny. It's sturdy, very easy to assemble (by myself), dry during heavy rains, and - bonus - really pretty! The storage pockets are really clever and plentiful as well. The only drawback is that it does not have accessory walls as an option. But, I re-purposed my old Kelty-shelter accessory walls to fit the 2 sides. NOTE: To make your life easier for the next time you set up this shelter, be sure to put the guy-lines back into their tiny pockets before you put the shelter away. Very clever amenity, but you need to actually use it or the lines may get tangled up.
Works Well Under Redwood Rain
I tested the Homestead Shelter this past weekend while car camping with young kids under Santa Cruz Mountains Redwoods. The shelter kept us dry and comfortable when it rained & drizzled during the night and morning. The shelter was comfortable. It fit well over a picnic table, and could easily fit our 6'4" camping friends. It was sturdy, waterproof, and could take bumps from running 5 year olds. It is a bit heavy, so best for frontcountry locations. The well designed stowe bag makes carrying it easier. The shelter is well designed for car camping, beaches, or staging areas. I am also a #TNFLocals #AMBSR and received this gear to test.
Does the job.
Just got back from eight days in the central Washington Cascades. The shelter faced much rain, some wind, and a couple nights below freezing. Some leaks at canopy seams, so I'll go old school and sit down with some seam sealer. Functional design, typical of TNF. Easy set-up for one person, with poles lighter and stronger than the fiberglass poles on our older Kelly Sunshade. (Got tired of replacing snapped poles on that one, though we favor its canopy.) The color and print: "Whoa. Bummer of a '70s burnt orange flashback, man!"
Solid summer gear
I have been eying this up for a while and finally found it somewhere for s good price, which in turn makes me like it even more. I bought the kelty discovery shade two years ago and initially was happy with it but after using a few times I realized it was too bulky and all said and done was way too many pieces to put together. The homestead has two large poles that are pre bent so you get maximum space, plus to straight poles on the right and left side. There is plenty of storage that comes built into this which makes it even better. Overall I’m very happy with this piece of gear and will use it for many years to come.
Perfect for Car Camping and Days Outside
At first, I was a little turned off by how heavy this pop-up shelter seemed, but once you realize how much of a home it can provide when outdoors for an entire day (and when comparing it to other EZups, etc.), it is well worth the weight and space. We took it out into the park for a full day of events and was perfect shelter from the hot sun, stood strong from winds, and housed a large group of people throughout the day. It is so simple to pop up and take down, and is the perfect item to keep stored in your car trunk. I am most excited about taking it on our next car camping expedition to have a cool, protected place to hangout! #TNFLocals #AMBSR
Best beach tent!!!
First time using at the beach and the heads where turning!!! One man setup good but easier with two. Used toy buckets with sand to anchor down tie downs work great BUT needs bigger spikes for sand than what comes with tent. Small storm lifted tent and had to upright and re-anchor. Great shade, pockets for storage are easy, lightweight. Don't even need shades for sun block keep them for storage. Need more color options because in the south you need to represent you favorite college team! Just kidding!! Get rid of your old metal frame tent.
Perfect for Car Camping
My husband and I took this on a car camping trip to maple canyon in Utah. We posted it up in our campsite and it ended up being a lifesaver! It was also super easy to set up, easier than I thought considering how heavy it was and how many parts it seemed to have. It rained all night and half a day when we were there and none of our stuff got wet. A lot of our stuff was in the mesh side panels, and the rest was in the gear storage area. So, although the ground was soaked, none of our stuff was! And the dry lines helped for some of our wet clothes the next day. The lantern loop was a nice touch, it aided us in cooking dinner without carrying around a flashlight.
Great, with a flaw.
Great shelter from sun and light rain. My only complaint is the base fabric ( sits on the ground) that helps give it structural competency, gets heavily abused with foot traffic and rocks ect.Its the same thickness and material as the rest of the shelter.Hence not sure how long it will last. I take care of my gear, however I can see this fabric foundation getting worn out, or ripped easily. Seems like every time someone entered the shelter, they either lightly tripped or walked on it, which drastically increases wear and tare.
