City saver
This jacket is amazing. As I work and live in Queens NY commuting can be aggravating when it's 12 degrees out. This morning that wasn't the case. I woke up to read the temperature as 22, feels like 12 and immediately a shiver went through my body. I figured I would be a little risky and only wear a long sleeve kint tee under the jacket with a scarf (of course). I'm beginning to think short sleeved would suffice. I began walking to the subway and began to feel a little warm. By the time I got to the subway I decided that I needed to unzip the cost a little because it was keeping all my body heat in (amazing!). 5 stars. Thank you Patagonia for keeping me warm through another NYC winter. And thank you boyfriend for the best gift!
Love the length
I've been looking for a longer down coat and finally found it. This is very comfortable and keeps me warm down to my knees. It has both a zipper and snaps, a real help when my dogs are eager to get out the door and can't wait while I fiddle w/the zipper. Because Patagonia makes most of their women's clothes to fit a young, straight up and down figure, I had to get this in an XL as I'm neither. (I usually take a M or L). I'm very pleased w/the coat and will be using it for years.
Warmest.Coat.Ever
My criteria for this coat was to buy a coat that would be my "don't freeze to death" coat while also looking somewhat stylish. This coat did not disappoint: I wore it out in the Romanian mountains where it was between 5-9 F every day with mild to moderate wind and I was extremely comfortable. The only part of me that was cold was my face and my knees. I was warm and didn't feel like a marshmallow. I am already a loyal Patagonia buyer but this coat was worth every dollar.
I live in a cold place
People, Minnesota is a cold place. This coat keeps me warm. I am about 6 ft tall, and this coat is long enough to cover my bum, and the sleeves are thankfully long enough for me. Speaking of the sleeves, the are slim without being too tight, and I REALLY like the cuffs, or lack of cuffs; the arm just slims down to my wrist without binding and without extra, thick fabric, allowing the down filling to keep my wrists warm and also allowing me to squish them under some big mitts if we are really getting down into the -10's or -20s+. The neck I like for the same reasons as the wrists - it's comfortably snug, but still fluffy and not binding. I will say, I had one of my hood snaps break, but I took that baby back to REI and they let me exchange it, even many months later, because they are awesome that way. This coat cuts the wind, can dress up or down, and has a nice silhouette that doesn't make me look like a marshmallow. Highly recommend.
Good parka
Bought this parka for Pacific Northwest weather and it kept me warm and protected from cold winter chill. I'm 5'5, 125lb, and the xs fits snug and comfortable with thinner but warm wool sweaters. I don't intend to wear it with thick winter sweaters. The hood is just a bit small for my preference, but it still works fine. Overall, I'm satisfied with the purchase.
Super warm yet super light
I absolutely love this coat!! I went from my beloved TNF Arctic Parka that I've owned for over 7 years to this gem. I wanted something a bit longer since I would no longer be driving to work in the comfort of my warm car but instead braving the freezing elements commuting via train and walking half a mile to destination (downtown Chicago). I tend to sweat easily so I sometimes found myself sweating profusely in my Arctic Parka whenever I wasn't outside and still wearing my coat for some reason. I was skeptical at first when I purchased patagonia due to its light weight, but figured if it wasn't warm enough I would just layer up. In the 3 months I've owned this coat I have NEVER had to layer up. This coat is unbelievably warm without ever making me overheat...except for the one or two times where I had to run to catch the train. I also like that it can be very compact if you ever find yourself needing to stash it away in your gym bag or oversized purse. I was never able to do that with my arctic parka - never! (as a matter of fact I probably got a good workout whenever i had to carry that thing around in my arms.) The hood is also roomy enough to go over my winter hat and huge headphones without any problems. The chin guard/scarf also keeps the cold air out without it ever suffocating you. Very, very happy with my purchase. Best birthday present to myself!!
Not great for the money
I wanted to love this. I spent hours researching. This seemed like a good middle of the road price for quality. I was wrong. Sure, it's warm, but it's huge and puffy. It's not "slim" at all. The chest is tight by at least an inch, probably two. The zipper is annoying. The sleeves have no fabric around the wrists and air goes right up there. I'm disappointed.
Poor durability
I would like to preface this review with the fact that this jacket has been used gently and generally for my public trans commute to and from work. I purchased this parka 3 years ago. Initially it appeared to be a great $300.00 investment. Cozy, warm, and a long length, even if it was a little snug in the chest and shoulders, and the sleeves a little short. Unfortunately, with use it has not held up as a quality product. The issues began the 1st winter season when the buttons became nonfunctional. They would pop or tear off from either side of the zipper, but remained buttoned from the other side. This left small holes in the jacket that would lose insulation. I was willing to look past this since the zipper still worked. Ultimately after loosing all the buttons, including the 2 at the top, I was unable to secure the hood. Which anywhere else might not be an issue, but it is quite windy in Chicago, and the slightest breeze would blow the hood right off my head. No problem, I thought, I wear a hat anyway. ( I really wanted to like this jacket ) Ultimately, waiting for the train in the cold, I realized I may as well be wearing a rain jacket, this jacket has lost so much insulation. It is coming out from the seams. I leave a trail of duck down in my wake. This jacket was once comfy and fluffy, now all the insulation has fallen into sad lumpy piles in each quilted square, despite only dry cleaning and the occasion fluff cycle in the dryer. The wind blows right through the polyester. This jacket has a lot of great reviews, but I would wager that most of them were after being recently purchased or short term use. Maybe my expectations are on the higher side, but for $300 , I expect a product to last and hold quality, not progressively deteriorate in 3 winter seasons. Prior to this fiasco of a jacket, I had bought a winter coat and spent a comparable amount of money from a comparable brand and it lasted 10 years. And I would have purchased that same coat a second time if they had made it in anything longer than hip length. I had an hoped that I would get more than 3 seasons (which is being generous since this thing was falling apart from the get-go) out of this product. Instead I will be looking for a replacement for my $300, sad, lumpy, not warm winter parka.
Extremely warm
This parka is really warm and it is really well made. I found it somewhat flattering. I usually wear size M, but following the advice of previous reviewers, I ordered a size up and if fits me perfectly (just a little loose, will be perfect to wear cozy sweaters underneath).
size chart is wrong
its too bad this is such a nice coat, but runs very small and the size chart is not accurate
