Best Backpacking Meal Ever
I've never eaten a better backpacking meal! The rice rehydrates way better than other dehydrated meal options and the combination of real, sizable veggies with the yellow curry spice and coconut milk make this a meal I'd eat at home. My girlfriend and I thought we might be suffering from the bias of trail hunger (5 days backpacking in WY) the first time we tried it, but we've eaten them since then on day 1 and were still fighting over the last bite. Highly recommended, if you have the means.
Camping date night
I was skeptical of trying this item while camping, due to a not super experience with the risotto. This however blew me away! The flavor built up to spicy not "hit you in the face and you will feel it later too" spicy. All of the veggies in it came back to life, the flavor pouch was great.
Creamy & spicy.
Of the Good To Go meals, this ranks squarely in the middle for me. I've reviewed a few of these and they all get five stars for health, serving size, bag quality and weight. They do like boiling water and have a relatively long rehydration time, but I find they're worth the wait. For those who feel the seasoning doesn't mix, I always stir when I first pour and then squeeze the bag a few times while it hydrates to mix it up. Good: This is REALLY flavorful. The unbelievably meaty mushrooms live in good balance with the rice and vegetables. It includes a packet of coconut milk powder which reconstitutes well. It's spicy and I like the presence of fish sauce. Disappointment: The only thing I wasn't a fan of was that it was a bit salty, more so than the other Good To Go meals. This may be due to the fish sauce, which I enjoy as a flavor, especially alongside lemongrass and tamarind. It wasn't by any means "too much," just something I noticed. Sodium is still low compared to your typical dehydrated meal. I would recommend this when you're craving something creamy and you like a little heat. If you wanted to add a protein, I would go for salmon or chicken. I debated adding some dried banana – because I had it – but then forgot and ate it all before I remembered.
SO GOOD
I can't recommend this curry enough, its a perfect fatty salty sweet. I am plant based but also allergic to soy, gluten and yeast extract so my food options are often limited. I am so thrilled I found this stuff. It makes a generous portion, but you could easily divide it in half to make less. It takes a little bit longer than package directions say but worth it. It really is good even without 'doctoring,' hands down this is my favorite insta-food and I keep one in my car for work trips just in case. I've also tossed them into my checked baggage before when I know that my hotel food options will be limited.
Voted Best On Trail
This was actually quite good, better than typical freeze-dried dinners. More like real food, with just enough character to make it interesting. Of all the meals on our 9-day trip, we liked this the best. Note that, as with most brands, the so-called 2-portion size is actually about right for one hungry hiker.
Best backpacking meal ever!
If you like yellow curry, buy this meal. This backpacking meal is better than a lot of the take out yellow curry I've ordered here in Boston, or anywhere else for that matter. It's creamy and delicious with just a little spice. I originally purchased one for a backpacking trip in glacier, now I have a stack at home just waiting for a backpacking trip... or even just a rainy day when I don't want to bother going out to get food.
Don’t buy if you like Pad Thai
My daughter and I love pad Thai, but this was not good, even after backpacking. This had a weird taste and had a lot of filler - what seemed like textured protein? The noodles were tiny and insufficient. We should have brought ramen and hot dogs. We opted to not eat this and didn’t have anything else for dinner. Fortunately, our neighbors spared a hot dog for her, but it was not an ideal situation because then we had to store the whole meal in our trash/bear bag. Definitely try before you rely on this in the backcountry. Giving it 2 stars because there was a lot of it.
Yummy!
Real coconut milk flavor. Nice vegetable taste and quantity. This is the perfect alternative to the same old salty product. Takes more than 20 minutes at 5500'. Worth the wait. I've bought it twice.
Excellent!
I was really impressed at how flavorful this was without being too overloaded with salt. It was very filling without making you feel groggy, as well. The only negative is it takes over 20 minutes to rehydrate, but well worth the wait! I will definitely buy this one again.
WOW! Not your standard fare-so much better!
This is amazing. It tastes awesome, and this from someone who isn't really into curry. Not too hot and spicy. Just-right portions for two. Ral food. Not at all like the freeze dried, chemically enhanced, GMO-full meals that make up most backpacking fare. I have actually served this for dinner at home.
