Warmed me up right down to the bone!
I enjoyed the Chicken Pho after completing a 7.5 mile loop hike up Ben Lomond. The weather was rainy, foggy, windy, and a chilly 50F during the hike. The Chicken Pho warmed me right back up and the double serving satiated my appetite. The meal included 2 separate lime seasoning pouches which can be added to taste after cooking; I thought this was a clever touch. This was my first time using a flameless cooking system (not included) and I was happy to find the meal was cooked properly. The meal was full of flavour and definitely hit the spot after a long day of hiking.
Delicious and nutritious!
This summer I hopped on my bicycle for nearly two weeks and rode the entire length of the Colorado Trail. I was fortunate to bring along several servings of Good To-Go’s Chicken Pho. This delicious, nutritious, and lightweight dehydrated meal gave me the calories and protein needed to refuel after the longest days in the saddle. Good To-Go has created a nutritious, delicious, lightweight Chicken Pho that supplies you with loads of calories and nutrients to fuel you on your adventure. As with all their products, it is made with real ingredients that you likely have in your kitchen, comes in a durable package that can withstand the abuses of the outdoor world, and is quickly and easily prepared once you make camp. The Chicken Pho needs a large amount of water, so be mindful of how much water you have before you make camp!
A good basic camp meal
This meal was one of the better camp meals I have had in a while. The consistency of the meal is a little more stew-like than I would expect for a pho, but it is generally a good representative of the flavor profile I would expect for chicken pho. I would definitely want to pack some hot sauce to bring it up to the spice level I would prefer, but I would also spice up pho in a restaurant. My campmate thought the two lime powder packets were over kill and would have used only one the next time. This is a good option for someone wanting to vary their camp food a little.
Satisfying and filling
I found the GOOD TO-GO Chicken Pho to be quite satisfying after a hot bike ride in Tucson, AZ. Sort of funny to eat hot soup on a hot day but I found it quite nourishing. Might have been the high sodium in the Chicken Pho but I felt it was needed after the ride in 108 F degrees. Because I didn’t share any of my Chicken Pho I found that when it got cold (relative term) it became a little gritty. It didn’t stop me from eating it but it was a weird mouth feel. Also the chicken, which were few and far between had a total weird mouth feel and not much flavor, could be left out and not be missed. The True Lime packets were amazing at adding just that needed zesty flavor. All in all I enjoyed the Pho and I found it satisfying and filling.
Ok mild thick soup (I prefer other dishes)
To prepare, I took the advice of another review and mixed this in a pot (as the quantity of liquid in the pouch was said hard to handle; made sure the pan was hot before adding the measured boiling water quantity). Otherwise followed instructions to the letter, to evaluate. The texture of this entrée was a thicker soup, or conversely, a runny stew. An interesting flavor, but not with pronounced chicken. I could more tell finely shredded chicken by the texture. Two powdered lime packets give an acidity and tart finish that’s notable. Otherwise, the flavor is mild, while that’s true of its namesake dish too. This is a Pho representation, not a literal rendition. I suspect the same rice noodles used in this brands Pad Thai offering are used here too, while with more liquid in this preparation. The product lists “gluten-free” and “carnivore.” “Dark meat chicken” is the first ingredient, then “rice noodle”, so a bit surprising not to have stronger chicken flavor. Other ingredients are food stuffs you would recognize, not a list of chemicals, which is plus to me. Also, among “carnivore” ingredients are chicken broth and anchovies, with fish listed as the only obligatory allergen. This is not a spicy dish, while many seasonings appear in the ingredient list (including dried jalapeno). I am a big guy, with a big appetite, so about a portion and a half is good for me. I ate that much of a two-portion pouch, to be sated. The outer pouch is durable and sealed. This delivery came when I was away and sat out in the rain. The rain soaked the outermost delivery envelope into a puddle, while the product pouch kept its contents entirely dry. So this was inadvertently a good test of the packaging. You apparently can take this product into wet outdoor conditions, just fine. As end of review, I prefer stronger flavors and other dishes by this producer, which is why I rate as average. If you like milder flavors and more towards soup texture, this might be for you. One more plus is, because there's plentiful water in this mix, the contents cooked and hydrated thoroughly.
flavourful, but at what cost
There was a lot of flavour! I made sure to follow instructions, and even let it sit the appropriate extended amount of time since it was necessary. But it was still... hard? kind of chunky? The noodles were kind of cooked, but the flavour inside was just kind of grainy. If you're hoping this is a tasty "I-feel-kinda-gross" meal after a long day, I suggest a different soup! I'm refusing to give it less than 2 stars because it could have been user-error... but I also doubt it, so it gets 2 stars. (which is a bummer because this brand's mushroom risotto is my favourite.)
mmm, good soup!
Really good taste for a dehydrated meal. Good calorie and protein values, too, and good serving sizes for two people. The fact that it's a soup means you get a bit more hydration out of it. The lime crystals liven it up quite a bit, too. One of the better meals out there.
Next best thing to pho from a restaurant
I love eating Pho at restaurants, so I decided to give this meal a try. I've had other camp meals from good to go, and haven't had a meal one from them I didn't like yet. I was blown away after rehydrating this, the aroma of an authentic Pho broth hit me when I opened the package. There a nice kick of heat and tons of protein from the chicken. Amazing.
Not Pho, more like $2 spicy cup of noodles
I don't know what kind of Pho they serve in the vicinity of the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan, but this was not even remotely close to any Pho soup I've had! Tasted more like a $2 spicy cup of noodles you could buy at the grocery store, actually worse as the spice overpowered the soup, what a huge letdown!
Slurping with content!
I was given some Good to Go meals to try for taste and potential camping and chose this one 1st.Good choice! So I tried it at home with all conveniences, but prepared in pouch per instructions. As others have said, stir well. The best ingredients are deep in the pouch and require some digging with your spoon. Lime taste from packet is strong but enjoyable. 2 servings are possible, unless you're starving. I accompanied with some original seasoned pretzel twists which made it kinda like "crackers in the soup". Slurping the broth is the icing on the cake with this meal.
