good backpack meal, ordinary

Two downsides to this meal: 1. It costs significantly more than the other brand of Pad Thai. 2. The instructions said to remove the oxygen absorber. There was no oxygen absorber. After assurance that it was not hiding in the mix, we continued. Two of us shared one packet for dinner, quite filling. This meal was flavorful, tangy and just a bit spicy. Tiny noodles, with finely shredded carrots, a plus in a freeze dried meal. Even with extra stirring, some of the spice clumps did not rehydrate, but they wern't a problem. This was a good, not exceptional, backpack dinner. To earn 5 stars it would need to be good enough to serve at home.

I recently purchased Good To-Go Pad Thai for a section hike along the A.T. and this was our first meal of the trip. Added boiling water to the bag, stirred gently, and a bottom corner blew out and water poured onto my foot. I cannot give an honest assessment of the flavor-but would caution others to be careful handling these delicate bags in the field.

Pad Thai

Let me start by saying that this did not taste like any Pad Thai I have had before, either from a restaurant or made at home. Not necessarily bad, just different. The nuts that were included came in a separate pouch, presumably making it easier for those with allergies to avoid. I did mix the nuts into my bag, which of course adds a little texture. I did share this with my daughter, who is a big fan of the versions of Pad Thai available to us in Central Illinois, and she agreed that the flavor did not match her expectations. Overall, I thought the meal was good enough that I would eat it again.

A+ Brand, B+ Flavor

This brand is absolutely great, a few really fantastic dishes, but Pad Thai fell a little short for me. I've reviewed a few of these and they all get five stars for health, serving size, bag quality and weight. They do like boiling water and have a relatively long rehydration time, but I find they're worth the wait. For those who feel the seasoning doesn't mix, I always stir when I first pour and then gently squeeze the bag a few times while it hydrates to mix. Good: - Includes peanuts in a separate package - Not salty or over-seasoned - Tasty if you’re craving something a little sweet - Surprisingly filling Disappointment: - The wild shrimp was not as pronounced as I had hoped - For me, it was a little too carroty sweet - Between the TVP and egg, it also tasted very eggy - I likely needed to let it sit longer than usual as the noodles weren’t as soft as expected I had planned the double serving on a long day, as I assumed I would be extra hungry. I ate my fill and it was probably less than half, so that was nice and I've since found the single portions more than adequate. I saved the leftovers but they were not super to eat cold in the morning. I think where it failed for me was the texture and the fact that I was craving something more savory than sweet. Texture could probably be improved by longer rehydration shielded from the cold. This doesn't taste like restaurant-quality pad thai, but I could see it being satisfying after a week or two without veggies. For me, I’d prefer the Thai Curry if I was in the mood for something Thai. My hands down favorites by Good to Go are the Herbed Mushroom Risotto, Bibimbap and Indian Korma.

My Favorite!!

This is my favorite Pad Thai meal of all the freeze-dried Pad Thai's out there. Everytime I go on a backpacking trip this meal is always along with me at least one or two nights. I love the peanuts that come with it and the unique flavor. Trust me, you can't go wrong with this meal. I recommend two servings though if you're a backpacker and one if car camping. Also, invest in a long spoon to dine with (see photo for visual reasoning). Your hand will thank me. Happy Trails. :-)

I personally love it.

I see that the flavor is definitely polarizing ... either you're going to really like it ... or really not. This one happens to be one of my top 3 favorite backpacking meals. Yes, it's not like a pad thai in a restaurant, you don't get as much of the tamarind, but I think for what it is, it's delicious. I've tried a couple of other pad thai meals from other companies, but this one remains my favorite. I agree with some of the others that adding a bit more water than what's called for is good, but again, texture is also a preference. I bring along the RealLemon packets and sprinkle one on this dish since I like the brightness it adds to the flavor.

Savory and Satisfying

First, let's set expectations - don't expect you're going to be eating something akin to Pad Thai from a Thai restaurant. This meal isn't like that, but after a long day of hard trail work, this was the savory and hearty meal I needed. A single serving was filling, flavorful, had some bump in spice, and very satisfying. The directions call for 1+ cup of boiling water. I added about 1 1/4 cup. Could have used 1 1/3. It's up to you how you like the consistency. I will definitely bring this one along on another trip, and perhaps bring some chopped scallions or spinach to add to it.

Our favorite backpacking meal!

This might not taste like pad thai from your favorite restaurant, but this is one of the best backpacking meals around. Great taste and high in calories! Honestly we plan our big hikes around this meal--we save it for after the hardest days. It seems like backpacking meals are very polarizing, you might love one or hate one. I would say this one is definitely worth a try, and it might be your favorite too!

Good? Weird artificial flavor but got past it.

This is one of 4 different meals I was given to review by REI. I haven't been able to hit the trails this summer so instead I took the meals to the office one weekend and asked my group of coworkers to have a taste and let me know what they think. All meal packs were rehydrated for ~25 minutes as I find that the manufacturer suggested time is rarely enough no matter what elevation you're at. The volume of water added is exactly what is stated on the bag, measured with a scale. Out of the 4 meals I got this one was probably the best seasoned. It was a touch sweet, perfect salt level, and has a hint of sour. However, something tasted artificial. Almost like a plasticky flavor. That being said I could probably easily overlook the weird artificial flavor at the campsite. This is the one that my coworkers enjoyed most as well. Debated on 3 or 4 stars but considering that I'd gladly buy this one for my next trip I settled on 4.

Disappointing

I love the values that Good To Go embraces as a company, so I wanted to like this meal, but unfortunately I found it bland and unappetizing. I live in a neighborhood with a large Thai population and lots of great Thai restaurants, so maybe my expectations were too high, but I did not taste anything other than bland noodles - no sweetness, no spice, no lime, and no shrimp. I'm not giving up on Good To Go, and am looking forward to trying their Chicken Pho, but I will not be buying the Pad Thai again.

This Pad Thai is really, really bad

We were so looking forward to this dinner since we love Thai food. It was too spicy for my friend to take a second bite. I only made it through 4 bites. I love spicy food and add heat to Pad Thai in restaurants. This is strange since some other reviewers thought it bland. Possibly their spice mix or quality control is not consistent? I do agree that it is generally bad and does not taste like Thai food. Bottom line we had to pack it out as wet garbage and cut our trip short since we brought this for 2 dinners. What really sucks is that I contacted Good To-Go and they have not even bothered to respond in over a week. No longer willing to try their other expensive products due to poor costumer service.
