Tourists and recent transplants rarely think of New York City as a beach town, but we have miles and miles and miles of beautiful sandy Atlantic Ocean beaches. Sandy beaches aren't known for providing shelter from the sun. Despite constant reapplication of sunblock, sunburn is still a real danger. The decision has always been, limit the amount of time at the beach, or getting a little pinker than any dermatologist would recommend. The Whetstone Shelter is a game changer in this regard. It packs up small enough to be carried in my messenger bag on the 15 mile bike ride to the beach, pitches easily, and provides enough shelter for me and the wife to hide from the sun between swims. As mentioned in other reviews, you will need better stakes for loose sand. In short, there are very few products I feel strongly enough to take the time to review, this is one of them.

Great Non High Wind Shelter
Mike
I just used this on the beach in NC and it worked perfectly while there was a light wind. When the gusts came it was a different story. I will give this product 3 stars due to its unique design, but it needs to be more rugged if advertised for beach use. I travel to Hawai'i a bit and the Pacific wind would send this thing flying into the great pacific garbage patch. Stronger shock poles, heavier polyester, and more tie outs would make this product better for beach use.

Great Lightweight Shelter

Bought this right before Bonnaroo and boy was it useful. Very light weight and packs small so it didn't take up much space in our crammed vehicle. All the materials (shelter, footprint, and poles) are high quality that you'd expect from Big Agnes. Just like any music festival, it got HOT so it was great to sit under this and get away from the sun for a little bit. I bought the large so I had plenty of room for 2 of us to lay down and still be out of the sun and even slept under the shelter for a couple of nights. The only gripe i have is the stakes it comes with aren't the best but it's not that big of an issue. I know there are bigger shelters that are probably better for a music festival, but if you want to travel light and still have good protection from the sun, this is the shelter for you.

Good for a small group at the beach.

I purchased this item(the large) for a family of four to use at the beach. Great place to take shelter and create a base camp for the beach. Held up well in the wind but it wasn't overly windy when we were there. Easy to set up but need 2 people at the beach to set up in the wind. You will need better spikes for the beach than what comes with the shelter.

Looks perfect

I ordered this to use as a sun shade for when we leave AK to visit the beach. My first assembly (fresh out of box in my living room) took 5 minutes. My second assembly will likely be about 2 minutes. The shelter & setup is very basic (similar to most of today’s tents). The only trick is to make sure the floor is oriented correctly under the roof (for the purpose you want). It comes apart quickly/easily; and it also was simple to get back into the supplied storage bag. The sizes are as in the specs, so this will fit nicely within our checked baggage for travel.

Great shelter for a day at the beach with kids

Bought this a couple weeks back for a trip to the beaches of Costa Rica with my kids. The packed shelter easily packed into my checked luggage and it's lightweight design made is easy to carry. My son is almost 3 and my daughter is 8 months, the Whetstone shelter provided more than enough shade and protection from the elements. I purchased the large model knowing I needed the extra space - we comfortably fit 3 adults and 2 children without feeling cramped. Setup was a breeze and took < 5 minutes, but I would recommend 2 people for easier setup especially if there is any wind present. I also opted for a set of MSR Ground Hog stakes to ensure I had a secure anchor to the beach. The Whetstone shelter makes a sound shelter for kids for a day at the beach. Only drawback was we didn't have much breeze inside the shelter but we cooled quickly with a few steps outside into the ocean breeze.

Perfect for the beach!

We have been using a "nicer" beach umbrella for the past few years and it just wasnt enough coverage. After setting this this shelter up once, we were completely sold. Its solid in the high beach winds (making sure you anchored it down of course), it has multiple positions you can fix it at, comes with a floor mat... the list goes on. We also cant wait to take it camping :)

I REALLY wanted to love this shelter...

I set it up multiple times on the beach, and sometimes I really loved it. It was spacious and easy to set up... BUT if there was any wind at all it starts to fall apart. The stakes that come with the shelter are all but useless and if you're on a windy beach you can just forget about it. This one is going back to the store.

Good beach shelter

Pretty easy to set up. Make sure you use the ground barrier and you will want invest in better stakes if you use it on soft sand. Our first day of using it didn't go well because we didn't set it up well. But after buying better stakes and setting it up in the fly position it worked well.

Sturdy Tent and design

Bought this and used it 3 different times. It is a robust design and hold up in stormy weather. I wish the poles were a different material than aluminum. Also that the poles were a clip system like most tents and not the feed system.
