It's a sweater, not a jacket
I bought this down hooded sweater and have use it for two backpacking trips,11 days total. And i used the this jacket a lot. It is well made with the latest and greatest materials and is super light and packs down to very small. It does fit me true to size and the hood fits me fine. My only complaint is that it is not warm. I'd consider it a sweater or under layer...but not a jacket! At 50 degrees in the backcountry i used an under layer, this down sweater, and a down vest as the final layer. When the temp is warmer i could use this sweater alone, but then i prefer another choice not this. For $350 or so, i expected it to perform better in the warmth department. I believe for the money there are better choices. I would actually return it to REI but it has been over a year now so i get to own it for ever.
Losing feathers/fill constantly
I purchased this jacket as a mid-layer. I have had it one month and I have only wore it to and from work. I travel 2 miles to work daily in my truck, so there should be little to no wear at all. However, this coat constantly loses feathers/fill. I have feathers all over in my office, my house, my truck and et cetera. I could not even imagine using this jacket for anything that takes effort , like even walking. It would lose all its fill in no time. So disappointed.
Love it, but could be more durable
I've owned this jacket for a couple of years so it's time for a proper review. One thing to know before buying is that the fit is a bit on the small side so make sure you try it before. I really like the weight of this jacket, it's super light and pack small but I do have some issues with it. First, the threads are very easy to damage. You have to be very careful because they get easily caught in something, pulled and then break and then the separations between the rows of down are gone... The fabric itself is very light and you have to be careful, but I only have one hole so it's not that bad and basically any down jacket will experience some holes given the time. My other main issue is how the down will pack in certain spot and leave other parts completely empty of isolation. It happens mainly along the arms, near the elbow, the wrist and behind the shoulder. A slightly larger fit could potentially help with this, and putting it in the dryer with tennis balls helps to put the down back in place. One last thing, the labels on the fabrics will peel off after some time.
First Time Buyer - Highly Satisfied
I am new to the mountain hardwear brand and the ghost whisperer jacket was my first purchase. I am very happy with my jacket thus far. The quality seems to be really good. I read some reviews on here about how the zippers / fabric are too fragile but I have not had any issues yet. The most impressive feature is how lightweight this jacket is! It weights almost nothing and it keeps you very warm. This jacket has served me well with the winter weather in San Francisco. I do not know how well it performs in colder areas but I am confident that this jacket can hold its own. My only gripe with this jacket is that the sleeves are a tiny bit too long.
Not as functional as old synthetic version
I bought this to replace an aging synthetic MH Compressor jacket that has been a faithful, functional quality made product. While I found this jacket to be light and pack-able, I found this jacket to be of less quality and less functional than the old Compressor jacket. My main issue with the jacket is that the hood has no adjustment so your head spins inside the hood and hinders view and movement. While I am no a fan of Velcro especially in the snow, the Compressor cuff is at least adjustable for gloves where as the GW cuffs are cheap elastic and I would guess stretch out over time. My guess is that I will be ending up with a Tenacious tape jacket?
Great all around jacket
I've had this jacket for only 2 weeks now but I love it. I wear it biking everyday and have taken it on one backpacking trip. It cuts the wind pretty well but it is still breathable. The pack-ability was a huge selling point for me. I can pack this coat into a little bag I have mounted on my bike frame for when i get too hot while riding. Like wise I put this coat in my compression sack with my sleeping bag for my camping trip and I didnt even know it was there. Yes of course you can get a jacket that's warmer and more durable but thats not what this jacket was built for. For temperature I think this coat is good down to 40 degrees. Below that you need another layer. I bought it in the ugly yellow color because it was half price but the added visibility is a good thing for biking on the road.
Best insulated jacket ever? Yes.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My only regret is not making this purchase sooner. I had seen the jacket and read reviews, all which piqued my interest. Already had an insulated jacket that thought satisfied my need. Finally pulled the trigger on the Ghost Whisperer and best insulated, functional jacket ever. So lightweight you can forget you're wearing anything. Perfect for those early morning 14er starts...and the chilly summits reached. Great for alpine camping nights too. Trim fit. Looks great. Cannot be happier with this purchase. Highly, highly recommended.
Does what's it is meant for
Yeah it is not warm enough is you are standing around but excellent as an underlayer below a proper wind/waterproof jacket. When the zippers are open the fabric of the arms get stuck/rub against it and it is annoying. I have to recognize that it has lost quite a bit of down since purchase (2 months ago). I use it for backcountry skiing and it is a perfect light extra layer to be carrying around. I recommend this product. Also I have the green in a Medium and I have got lots of questions and compliments from friends and strangers about the look and fit of the jacket.
Back is too long
The one I am reviewing is version 2016 which is clearly marked on its label. I ordered small and its weight is 7.8 oz. There are two issues that I noticed right away. First, the zipper is very flimsy. It takes very delicate hands to separate the zippers apart at the zipper bottom. At times it can be very frustrated. I simply can't image how bad it can get on the trail or in the dark. Secondly, the back of the jacket is too long, and even my long Gore-Tex Pro hardshell (Outdoor Research Maximus) can't even entirely cover the jacket's back length. So there is no way I can keep it dry.
an essential jacket when travelling light and fast
This jacket was essential to my most recent trip and will be invaluable on my thru hike of the JMT this summer. I never thought I would be able to cram an 800 fill down jacket into my pockets, but this jacket proved me wrong. I was able to cram this thing into any small spare crevice or pocket of my pack at all times and wore it 80% of the time I was not actually hiking. The warmth is incredible and even though it looks super fragile it's a very sturdy material. I was thrilled to be able to pack this and a supercharger shell into my day pack during a summit bid on one of my 'off days', I was able to travel super light without sacrificing my warmth or protection from the wind & rain. the q-shield technology makes me confident when travelling in the high sierra where a storm can strike at any time.
