Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not waterproof at all!! I purchased this 2 weeks ago and all I needed to do was to walk in wet grass and the soles of my socks got soaked. Today, it rained heavily. Needless to say, my feet were swimming in the shoes in under 5 minutes. My husband went on the same walk as me and his socks remained dry after our walk in a pair of shoes that were a year old. I will be returning these shoes. If your feet are going to be in wet conditions (i.e. grass that has been watered/rained on) for more than a few minutes, and you want your feet to be dry during and after that, this pair of shoes is not what you want.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not water proof... I bought these shoes for my girlfriend because she is on her feet all day. She is an archeologist, and she works all over the South West. Her last pair of shoes lasted about 10 months, and I'm not sure these will hold up. She just returned from a survey in Nevada, and she was a little disappointed in shoe because her socks were soaked after walking through a an inch of mud. The shoe claims to be water proof, and it also claims that it, "Keeps It Fresh." The shoe's AEGIS Microbe Shield is supposed to, "provide protection against odor, staining, and deterioration caused by bacteria, fungus..." but the shoe reeked of mildew. I spent a lot of money on these shoes. I'm a little upset that they couldn't keep a foot dry in an inch of mud.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfort right out of the box Merrell are my go to boots/shoes. The size fits me perfectly; I wear an 8 no matter what. I always bring them home and wear them around the house with my hiking socks to see if I notice anything rubbing. I remove the insole they come with and insert my own. I use SOLE inserts as I have high arches. Also, I need to feel that I can flex my toes inside to verify the fit is accurate. I have already had them out on three hikes since I bought them and they feel very comfortable. These boots suit day hiking and I would not expect them to perform for a backpack as there would be too much weight on them. They are day hikers for me when I am carrying a light pack. I use stiffer soled heavier leather boots for backpacking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my Merrells This is my second pair of Merrell's. Had never heard of them and bought a used pair a few years ago for hiking. Wow! They were amazing. The past two winters I hiked miles and my feet kept warm and dry. I couldn't wait to put them on in the morning. They fit so good! Well those used Merrell's wore out finally and I had to get a new pair a few weeks ago. Now I am walking tall again. And being that they're a new pair, they are even warmer and fit even better than the used ones. I highly recommend Merrell Hiking Boots!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great shoe, but not for wide feet Overall, GREAT shoe. My only issue is the arch support/shoe insert. Every now and then, the arch feels a little to high and feels very irritating, and I think it's because of the adjustable insert. As soon as I reposition the insert, everything's fine, but if I'm in a situation where I can't take the time to remove the shoe and fiddle with the insert, it's an absolute nightmare. It could also be that my feet are too wide for them (I usually by Mens Merrells). No complaints whatsoever aside from the arches of the inserts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Made me a happy hiker. These hiking boots are awesome. I've put a lot of miles on them in a short amount of time and they are holding up well. The are very lightweight, and the waterproof has held up 100% - even on some pretty wet hikes when others are complaining that their waterproof shoes are starting to get damp. Also, I didn't find that they needed a lot of breaking in - they were comfortable on my first hike and I haven't a single blister from them. Being waterproof and insulated they obviously are not the best ventilated choice for summer hikes, but I've worn mine into the season and still love them. The only con I've found thus far is that the shoe laces don't seem to stay tied - I have to retie them four or five times on one hike. I suggest using a twist tie or elastic to try and keep the knot secure, though I'm thinking about just buying new laces at this point.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No blisters, but... I took these boots caving and hiked 4 days in the Andes. I did not have to wear them in and I did not get a single blister! They are indeed waterproof (I walked across creeks and mud and my feet were still dry). The only reason why I returned these was because my feet kept sliding down my boot when walking downhill. On my trek we hiked about 2-3 hours downhill and my feet were killing me! Even after pulling the laces as tight as I could. They continued to hurt for the rest of the day (about 2-3 hours of flat hiking). I purchased another pair of boots and hope that those will work out better. Otherwise, if these boots fit I would highly recommend them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these boots! These boots are extremely comfortable and fit very well. I needed to replace my old hiking boots last minute, so I used these on an 8+mile hike straight out of the box and it was like I've worn them for years. We got rained on during this hike, which made for a muddy, slippery mess along the trail. These boots kept my feet warm and dry and kept me from slipping a few times. As far as some complaints about these boots not staying waterproof goes: I've had waterproof boots in the past that stopped being waterproof after a few months of wearing them. In my experience this is normal, which is why I keep a can of waterproofing spray on hand to treat my boots and other gear periodically.

how good and comfortable would these be for people with Planters Fantasia? and spurs in both feet? It is hard for me to find a shoe that is comfortable to wear and be able to walk around in with my feet hurting all the time.

Asked by: soulseeker
The anatomic foot beds in these shoes provide good comfort and cushioning. You may consider a support insole for additional support: https://www.rei.com/c/insoles

I am planning a trip up Kilimanjaro. would these shoes work?

Asked by: jaiche
These boots are a great choice for a simple day hike, but if you are doing a tougher hike with a heavy pack you may want to consider something with more ankle support.

I have a pair of Merrell Radius Mid hiking boots. These are apparently no longer available. Is the Merrell Moab Mid the replacement?

Asked by: goofyhiker
The Moab Mid Waterproof boots will be a very good replacement for the Merrell Radius boots. Both have a nylon shank, Vibram outsoles and are waterproof.

Thinking about ordering these boots for my girlfriend. She typically wears a size 8.5. Do these boots fit true to size, or should I order a half size up?

Asked by: SB206
These boots do run true to size, but we recommend ordering about a half size up from your normal shoe size to allow for extra room in the toe.

I am considering a purchase for the WHW trail in Scotland next spring, and need to be prepared for all types of weather and terrain. If these boots are waterproof as described, why are some customers indicating they are not?

Asked by: chingea
The Moab Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots are made with a waterproof/breathable membrane which does make them waterproof. We have contacted Merrell regarding this question and they are not aware of constant defects with the Moab Mid boots. As always, REI stands by all of the products that we sell. If you are not satisfied with the boots, you are more than welcome to return them for a full refund. http://www.rei.com/help/return-policy.html

How well would these boots be suited to mild winter conditions? Specifically, I'm referring to New Zealand winters, if you're familiar.

Asked by: alekhaugen
The Merrell Moab Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots are fine for mild winters. You can use various weights of socks to regulate how warm they will be. We do not recommend these for severe cold.

I currently have women's size 9 Merrell Moab hiking boots. The toe box is a little to narrow and I am thinking of trying a men's size for more space in the toes.  What size would I need?

Asked by: Girl hiking
Based on your women's US shoe size, we recommend a US size 7.5 in the men's Moab Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots.
