Best Use Hiking
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Forest Pass Yet I've had many Northwest Forest Passes over the years, but I have to tell you, this one is the best. The rectangular shape of the pass is perfect. I mean, you could use this thing as a protractor to find a perfect 90-degree angle. And the material of the pass? Don't even get me started. Q - U - A - L - I - T - Y. I've never felt such a fine material. Is it plastic? Is it heavy card stock? Who cares; it just feels so nice in the hand. But honestly, it looks much better hanging from my rearview mirror, and it tells the world, "Hello, world! I frequent recreation day-use sites on national forests in Washington and Oregon!" Worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the right amount of pockets! I have to say, I really like my Forest Pass. It hangs well off my mirror or laying on my dash. It is a nice orange and black color which makes it easy to see for the Forest Rangers, and keeps me from having to pay a fine to be out in nature. My only complaints are that I have to fold it to get it to fit in my over head sunglasses storage, it doesn't work as a snow park pass, and it doesn't taste or smell like bacon. (I do love bacon!) Overall I am very happy with this purchase and will continue to buy one annually.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a forest pass..... Really REI? You wanted me to make a review of the Northwest Forest Pass? Well for starters, it's not water proof, doesn't have any pockets or water storage and it doesn't secure properly to my frame pack. Other then that its a great piece of essential equipment that sits in my car and does nothing but keep me from getting a ticket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheaper! I wish I had googled northwest forest pass and saw that REI sells them before I paid [$] for mine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value As much as I wish I could designate all my taxes to go towards public land stewardship, I think this is a great value. If it helps keep trails open and outhouses clean, then I'm all for it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This pass really works. Great job REI! I had a difficult choice choosing which pass was the best for me. I like the America the Beautiful Parks pass, but sometimes I thought maybe the Conservation Pass that comes with my fishing license was a good choice. But the Northwest pass has so many options. Ultimately, I decided to go ahead and spend the five thousand dollars it costs to park my car everywhere outside of a city and do it all.

I am not from the area and looking into this as a gift for someone in the oregon/washington area. My question is this-how many parks offer entrance fees for those without a car? Is this really only logical for people driving into the parks and parking?

Asked by: jlp298
The NW Forest Pass will NOT get you in to ANY parks, National or State. It IS required for trail heads, campgrounds, etc in National Forests [falls under the US Department of Agriculture]. National Parks [US Department of the Interior] require an "America the Beautiful" Pass [$80]. ALL state lands in WA [including parks] require a Washington Discover Pass [$30].

Does the forest pass come pre-punched? Perhaps with the year, but not the month purchased? I say this because what if it's a gift and they won't be using it right away?

How does the Forest Pass differ from the Discover Pass?  Does the Forest Pass waive the fees to park and hike? There are quite a few different passes out there and I'm getting confused as to what each one does.
