Good for 2+ years, with one modification
I've used this for 2 years now, 1st on a low end MTB, and since May on my Novara Randonee (drop bars). The mirror works great for commuting. I can keep an eye on what's gaining on me. Another reviewer commented on the hinge pin getting loose. Mine fell out, but I noticed before the mirror dropped out. I replaced the pin with a machine screw and nylock nut, which I believe is what it should have had to begin with. I can tighten the screw the tension on the joint to make the mirror hold its position better. I haven't had any problems with the mirror mount staying fixed in the bar end. You have to "screw" it in to expand the foam plugs in the bar end. I like that it's large, it's glass, and fits in the bar end.
Poor field of view, always moves out of adjustment
I spent around 100 miles with this product, after breaking my former mirror in a fall. I bought this mirror because it was the only bar-end mirror that REI carries. After 100 miles, I mail-ordered the brand that I'd been using for the past several thousand miles. There are two big problems with this mirror. The first is that it's concave, like a makeup mirror. Which means that it has a very small field of view until people/cars are right behind you, then they appear huge. The second problem is the rubber mounting mechanism. It really doesn't hold that well, and I was constantly adjusting the mirror to try to get as much of a view behind me as I could.
Not recommended
I commute on my bike everyday. Not far, but as far as this mirrors concerned that shouldn't matter. The bike gets parked in a crowded bike rack, so bumps are to be expected. In retrospect, a bar end model might not be the right design for my need. However, its been dropped and banged around. The mirror broke, but didn't fall out, so I can use it cracks and all. Unfortunately, the hinge of the mirror has become loose, so the mirror is constantly falling out of adjustment. The hinge cannot be tightened, so this is a permanent situation. I'm looking for another mirror, and will not recommnend this one.
Terrific product!
This is a great mirror! Far better view than with helmet-mounted mirrors. Wide field of view, no vibration, easy to adjust, folds out of the way for trail riding. Sure, if you crash a lot, or like to just dump your bike on the ground, a bar-end mirror can break, and may not be a good choice for you. But with reasonable care, this product is very durable. I have one that has survived ten years through all sorts of riding, and I love it!
Great value!
I purchased this mirror because I wasn't satisfied with helmet-mounted or other too-small, plastic mirrors that scratched easily. This has a 3", slightly convex, glass mirror that provides excellent visibility. The double, knurled rubber rollers function as cams that constitute an extremely secure attachment method. I was concerned at first that the bar-end-mounted mirror would be a hazard, extending too far to the side, but this has not been the case. Shortly after I bought the mirror, my bike (a 33 pound mountain bike) fell over with the mirror hitting the ground first. The mirror broke at the bracket, but by taking advantage of Third-Eye's $6 repair service, I was sent a new, replacement mirror for the one that had broken. I am very pleased with the service I've received from this small California company and have recommended this mirror to my friends.
Unusable
This is the first bike accessory I've ever had that felt like it wasn't actually tested by anyone who rides a bike. The mirror is the equivalent of looking behind you through the zoom lens of a camera, absolute tunnel vision, the exact opposite of what you want when trying to assess your immediate surroundings. Who is this useful for? I had an older version of this mirror from the same company that worked well and was useful, but the plastic arm (of course) snapped from vibration after 2 years. The only nice thing I'll say about this new version is that it probably wouldn't have that problem because the way you attach it inside the handlebar tube is simpler and better cushioned. If you buy this for a city commute you will regret it.
Liked it so much I bought more
This mirror is extremely useful, is very compact and can be folded out of the way. Unfortunately it is not indestructible and have ruined a few when the bike fell over or the mirror got hit. I even had one stolen when I was at the store (bike was locked). If you like this mirror I suggest you pick up a few extra just in case.
Excellent mirror at a great price
I needed a replacement for my previous mirror that had broken after 5 years of use and was looking for something a little more compact. After reading the reviews on this one, I was a little hesitant, but upon checking it out at the store I figured that I’d give it a chance. I installed it on my bike at the store, very easy with no tools required. It was easy to adjust and held its position well, with no adjustment necessary for my 20 mile ride home. It looks like they’ve fixed the pin problem that was noted in previous reviews, the pivot now has a screw and barrel but that can be tightened if necessary. I now have a few hundred miles on this mirror and am still very pleased. I only need to adjust it if I’ve bumped it, it stays in place even on the roughest roads, which we have plenty of here in Tucson! The size is perfect and the convex surface allows you to see a large space behind you. I would recommend this mirror to anyone!
great view and, not so durable or stable
Installed easily in my MTB bar end after cutting away the rubber grip end cap but was a little floppy because the rubber stopper mount isn't very precise. It needs adjustment before every ride and it broke after 2 or 3 bike tip overs, not crashes, just tipping over. It's cheap and the view is nice, just not durable or too convenient.
Spontaneously combusted
This was one more disappointing bike mirror. The components seem very heavy-duty, and the image quality is excellent, but after less than a dozen rides the 2 pieces came apart while I was riding along a smooth road. This left the mirror portion on the ground, of course. The mechanism at the joint had failed, and couldn't be found.
