Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I have problem feet: one flat, one high arch. The latter is an adaptation related to a non functioning peroneal nerve which was amputated. Finding shoes that are comfortable helps minimize my neuropathy, poor propioception, and so my gait disturbance. Altras have been good for me, and since I have a narrow heel, these are perfect in terms of fit and comfort. However the uppers do seem of very light construction, so I’m concerned they won’t be durable. And holy Moses are the laces short, and since they’re flat laces, double tying them is imperative. There’s barely enough lace for an inch of double tied bow.
Comfortable, love the blue color, barely hit a stick walking and the mesh ripped, not a huge fan of the exterior material they used as it is also hard to keep clean.
It’s so narrow! Narrower even than my brooks ghost. Be very careful with new altra models, they’ve been straying far from their roots.
The show was great for about a month, but the top fabric is very thin and weak. The shoes already have multiple holes in the top near the toes, I reached out to the altra customer service through multiple channels and I haven’t gotten any response from them.
These are the only comfortable shoes I could find for daily wear. Unfortunately, Riveras are not the most long-lasting shoes. The Rivera 3 is significantly more durable compared to the Rivera 2, in that a pair lasts me about 3 months instead of 2 months. The foam compresses super easily, and the shoe becomes uncomfortable to wear well before the tread wears out. That being said, these are the most comfortable shoes I've had since Hoka massacred the Cavu. As a bonus, due to the wide toe box, I can fit my orthopedic insoles without having to trim them down.
These a good running shoes, a little more firm than other Altra shoes I have. They are also a little bit narrower but still have good room in the toe box. The laces come loose easily and I have a hard time getting through a run without having to re-tie them. I like having them in my rotation, I would not have them as my only running shoe.
Product quality is poor - within 2 months of purchase, large portion of heel wore down and then fell apart. Please keep in mind that my son only wears these to school. Other than the terrible quality, the look and fit is nice.
I work in a hospital and the comfort is awesome as I expected from 1st gen Rivera. My only complaint is that the toe part of the shoe bends/caves in/folds. I feel it on my toe. It doesn't hurt but I do feel it throughout the day. Personally I don't think the shoes are narrow, just padded around the ankle which I do like. The Rivera's are really comfy overall.
size guide recommended size 10, bought sz 10. fit was excellent. cushion felt great. snug through arch section but enough toe box room to spread out. i liked the fit of these through the arch better than the Clifton 9, which fit toe box nice, but too much extra fabric/loose in midfoot. Anyway, I was about to say these are a keeper, but as I was putting on other side of shoes, I saw a problem. I noticed ripple across green altra logo on inside of arch. closer inspection I saw the outer net-like mesh wasn't attached/glued or a part of the main upper fabric. I could actually pinch it away from main fabric. I decided even at REI sale price, and great return policy, I didn't want to risk tearing/snagging this netting and having a tear. so I returned. bummer bc these are a great fitting comfortable shoe. back to shoe hunting. I would recommend it, bc maybe my pair was defective since I didn't see other reviews with this specific issue. minus 1 star
I have tried several brands of road-running shoes in the past several years. I wore each pair 6-9 months. After comparing many factors, Altra came out on top. What I like most is the consistency of the shoe. Knowing that a brand new pair of shoes will not come with unwanted surprises is a comfort.
