Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Beware of a short-lived shoe; I got about 150 miles out of my Via Olympus 2 shoes. With just six weeks of walking paved neighborhood streets, up to four miles a day--by a 66 year-old who weighs 145 pounds--the shoes had holes. A hole in the top above my toe, a hole in the center behind my heel, and a hole on the side of the heel box. All beginning after just 150 miles or so of gentle dog walking. I contacted Altra customer service, and after providing all the information they requested they denied my warranty claim. I've worn high quality running shoes for over 40 years. I don't wearout shoes quickly usually get 350-500 miles from a pair. None have disintegrated so spectacularly or so quickly as these Altras. I suspect any other brand of running shoe from REI will be better than these, don't bother with Altra.
Whenever Altra makes a change, it's hit or miss. I bought a pair of the original Via Olympus shoes in 2023, and went from barely running a mile to training for my first marathon. Early 2024, I figured I should get another pair so I'd have newer shoes going into the marathon. This is when Altra switch and came out with the Via Olympus 2. Right off the bat I noticed something was off. The left shoe seemed to cause my ankle to pronate, but not the right. I went ahead and tried to use them for a few weeks, and it completely trashed my marathon training. Thankfully I still have a few hundred miles of life left in my first pair until Altra figures out how they screwed these shoes up so bad.
First, the 1 star review is on the situation; not the shoes. Ordered while on sale. Waited a number of days for some word and nothing. Happened to look online, to find out REI cancelled the order. No communication. Assuming they were out of stock, but there was nothing saying there were no rain checks, which makes it seem shady. Would love to review the shoes, but instead all I can review is a questionable company practice on sale items. Unless it says while supplies last, or no rain checks, you honor the sale price when they are back in stock, or give the customer the option to cancel. You don’t just cancel with no advice.
These are the best sneakers I've every had. I'm glad I discovered wide-toe-box sneakers, which are so much more comfortable for the natural shape of your foot. I like that these are zero drop as well.
This is only a partial review because I returned these almost immediately after they arrived. Despite being advertised as having a room toe-box, I found that these were tight across the forefoot. It appears the toe-box space is biased towards the outside of the foot and doesn't extend much into the forefoot, so for me and my bunions there was not enough room. YMMV, so I suggest trying these on in a store if you really need the forefoot width.
My job has me standing on my feet 8 hours a day. Tried a number of the Hoka's and they just we not for me. After a few hours they started to hurt my archs. Tried the Bondi, Graviota and a couple of others. Then tried these Altra's. Very happy so far. No arch ache's like with the Hoka's. Happy Feet!!
Big fan of these shoes, was looking to get a pair of Altra shoes that I could go long distances in. These have been great so far, my only complaint is that the foam could be a little softer but I understand why it is a bit firmer to give support especially on longer runs. Just compared to the Altra Escalates I have I expected that super soft feel with the foam. Again the padding isn't bad just wasn't what I originally had expected.
I just received the Altra Men's VIA 2 Road-Running Shoes. I must say that they are the most comfortable sneakers that I have ever owned- WOW !!!! The room in the toe area is outstanding. The padding and the overall room of the shoe is better than other very expensive sneakers I've purchased in the past. I don't know how the durability of the shoe is but I'll see.
