Good product but a bit large and heavy

The Ledlenser HF8R Core headlamp features a very strong beam and a number of brightness settings, making it good for a variety of conditions. The main body articulates up a bit as well, which is helpful if you aren't able to move your head into the right position. The reason I gave it three stars is that it is SO big--I was hoping to use this headlamp for running but it's just too large and heavy to be useful to run with. Navigating to different lightness settings was also a bit less intuitive than I would have liked. This headlamp would be great for outdoor workers and perhaps for hiking, but was too much for my use case.

Great light for projects; not so much for sports

**I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.** Overall, this headlamp has features that address some real needs in niche areas. But this would not be my choice for sports or other active/fitness events. My first impressions out of the box: This thing is SOLID (i.e. big and heavy). I'm used to my Petzl headlamp that I've used for nighttime running, hiking, and events like Ragnar runs. Per my comparative photos, the Ledlenser is MUCH larger and heavier. The construction is really solid--it feels like a good piece of equipment. But I tried this thing on once for a run and gave up almost immediately: In order to keep it in position on my head I had to either tighten the strap to the point of discomfort or add the over-the-top head strap that I just don't like without a hat or helmet. Once I decided it wasn't a good fit for sports applications, I started using it for other projects in my house and yard. For that, the Ledlenser is AWESOME. It's got a strong battery life, and is very bright on multiple settings. The headlamp has a feature that will adjust lighting intensity based on the space you're in. For example, when I'm outside in the dark it turns itself up to a brighter light--but then when I hold up a map in front of my face it turns down the intensity so the bright light doesn't reflect painfully off the closer surface. I was skeptical at first, worried that the constant intensity switching would be annoying--but I actually really started to like it. It means that I can switch activities (from outside to inside to reading) without having to manually adjust the lighting. The headlamp also has an adjustment wheel that allows to focus or disperse the light beam which is pretty nice. Once I had the features figured out, I really liked the headlamp. There was definitely a learning curve--my picture of the instruction manual (it's two sides!) shows that the instructions are VERY detailed (and I found the layout pretty confusing). So expect to take some time to familiarize with the features and how to make adjustments. Also, I did notice that the headlamp itself gets fairly warm after a few minutes of use. It worried me at first that it would overheat, but that didn't happen and it never got to the point of being too hot to touch or causing concern. I ended up using this headlamp to work at night in the yard or in dark spaces in my house for projects. Super useful for that so long as I'm able to wear a hat or helmet that can accommodate the top head strap to hold it in place. This would be great for spelunking. But trying to run or do other sports activities was out of the question given the size and weight of the headlamp.

Holy BRIGHTNESS Batman!

Wow, this is one BRIGHT headlamp! The multiple brightness settings and scroll wheel are really amazing! Having a rechargeable battery is a huge plus as well. I have used it for several hours and have not had to recharge yet. Best uses - due to its weight and size, I have found that using it for things around camp or around the house to be ideal. I believe this light is going to find a home semi permanently on my climbing/SAR helmet. Because of the larger size/weight, this headlamp will not be my "go to" for things like running or night hikes. For me it gets 4/5 stars simply because of the weight/size. The brightness is incredible and if weight isn't an issue for you in your endeavors, this just might be the ideal headlamp for you!

A serious headlamp with serious features

I walk daily before sunrise, so I rely on a good headlamp in the dark. I was looking to upgrade so this headlamp caught my eye because of a couple of key features. Namely, the headlamp will adjust from a wide range to a more concentrated spot automatically, it tilts to allow you to aim the beam (which is handy over a hat brim), and it will go to a red light rather than plunge you into darkness if the battery runs low before you are back home. The headlamp is amazing at these things, especially automatically adjusting the light beam (I've included a photo of each type of light beam). This is a serious headlamp and its only downside is that comes with weight. It's noticeably heavy for the casual user. But for someone who needs its features, the weight was nicely offset by the brim of my cap. This will be in regular morning rotation for me.

Aces

Alright - I’ve used dozens of headlamps in my lifetime. From cheap energizer battery ones to top of the line with all the bells and whistles. This is an excellent headlamp. Why? It hits all the wickets for what you want in a lamp. Rechargeable battery - key. Red light - key. Extremely bright - key. Auto adjusted light - this is a first for me and I have to say it was impressive - close up to a wall it auto dims to make sure you don’t use more light and battery than you need. This helps tremendously with maintenance of decent night vision by not over using light when it’s not needed. Worked way better than I thought it would. Also the head band is sturdy, and doesn’t come loose like so many seem to do. All around this is a great light - the best I’ve owned and I’m thrilled to get rid of the few others I’ve hung on to over the years.

Great, but heavy and big

There are SO many great things about this headlamp, but it's also not great for the main activities I use headlamps. Let me explain... Pros: 1. Amazing swivel (see video). Most of the time when I wear a headlamp with a hat, the swivel to light up the trail in front of me ends up being blocked by the visor of my hat (yes, I wear a hat even at night for strategic hair and sweat purposes). This is not the case with this head lamp. It sits far enough off the hat that my visor didn't really impede the light shone AND I got great, clear light. 2. Battery life was good for several 40 minute runs and even some dog-walking sessions. 3. I found the adaptive light beam to be useful (though not necessary or game-changing). Cons: 1. This thing is big and heavy. As you'll see in the photo, it takes up nearly the entire front of my hat. With the size comes weight. Way too heavy to be my go-to headlamp for my runs (3-4 times per week). For backpacking, the brightness of the light does not mitigate the weight--when ounces count, this lamp would be way too heavy. 2. If I wore it without a hat, the rubber strap pulled on my hair a little. 3. Bluetooth is an unnecessary feature in headlamps, in my opinion. Bottom line: this is way too big and heavy to be used for regular runs or backpacking, but would be an amazing torch for car camping and other activities including crafting, working on/under a car, and household activities that require going into attics, basements or under homes.

High-end product

I got this to replace an old one and it's like the rolls-royce of headlamps. My main use is short distance stuff like crafts, car maintenance and general tinkering so I might have overdone it here. The adaptive setting or just low works great for most of my needs. The spotlight's brightness really astounded me. Despite the small size (like an old Nokia phone strapped to your forehead) it seemed as powerful as one of those big D-cell ones. I just checked and the 1600 lumen max beats a lot of the handheld ones. I wore it out the other night to walk my dog and was an illuminating experience. Instead of juggling my cell phone light and the leash in one hand while cleaning up after her, the whole process was a cinch. This moment of brilliance was short-lived though as I soon realized how silly I must look to my neighbors so I will not be repeating. Unless they're attached to a hardhat (and preferably hundreds of feet underground) all headlamps look uncool. I have only been using it with the single strap around the head and have had no issues. There is an additional strap which may be useful for hiking or other vigorous activity but I've had no need. Just make sure to insert the rubbery forehead pad- it was fairly uncomfortable until I figured that out. The package comes with what looks like a deck of cards. Most is useful only to learn "don't eat the battery" and "don't stare at the light" in 25 languages (I counted). The rest unfolds like a big treasure map of additional functionality. RGB, sleep, transport, boost and other modes that I haven't really used. The charging cable is USB-C to some magnetic contact charger, so don't lose the cable. The only other downside is it's a bit pricey, I justified getting it because it was on sale. I usually only get the top-end stuff as gifts but I'm glad I splurged on this new toy
