I can only wear ultras and topos due to I need a wide toe box. I go bk n fourth cause sometimes topos give me rubbing even when I size up right on my side toes, but I like how they hug more in my ankle and arch area than ultra. I bought these and wore them during my ancient lakes wa 50k and they did not disappoint. I never wear a shoe right out of the box but I took a chance. I’m buying a second pair. I was falling and stepping right on sharp pointy rocks and it did not hurt. I love that they aren’t cushioned too much I like to feel the ground and prefer it. They vent very well and one downside to that is a lot of dust gets in so one may need to really clean feet more during farther ultras but these felt great for me, and I’m happy I found a topo trail shoe that works for me again. Can’t best the vibrant sole although it outlast the rest of the shoe most of the time. I can’t speak to the durability yet as I’ve only worn them for this one 50k on rugged trail so far.
I just bought these for a trip to Sedona and in general, they are a seriously good trail shoe. The vibram sole was fabulous on the smooth red rock and I had incredible grip. Seriously, on steep smooth rock i just walked right up and down with full confidence. My feet were really comfortable over multiple back to back days of 12+ mile hikes on rocky terrain. I would have marked 5 stars but the toe cap started coming unglued/flapping back after only one hike. Even still, I feel 4 stars is a bit harsh, 4.5 is more appropriate but I don't have that option. I will be using the REI return policy to get a new pair in hopes the pair I got is just faulty, because other than that I'm thrilled with the shoes.
I have had multiple pairs of these shoes and love them. I do most of my running on rocky limestone trails and these shoes are durable and protective while remaining lightweight. The sage color is much lighter in person than is shown on the REI website .
I wear these when I want a little extra cushiness, e.g. when I'll be standing all day at work or if I'm having a rest day, and they're great for that. I sometimes forget I've got them on and wear them to lift weights or to the archery range, and they're more squishy than is idea for that -- but that's on me for wearing them to the wrong activity. UPDATE: I wore a hole in the toe after two months of not even daily use. As much as I liked these I’ll be returning them; at this price they should last more than nine weeks.
I love the look of the shoes. Gives a very secure vibe on the foot. I was looking for a replacement for my Lone Peaks because I just couldn't stand the lack of cushion. These aren't much better. after walking three different terrains over 4 miles each walk, my heels and knees were hurting. They're too stiff and rigid, little flexibility in the heel and caused pain, even with Superfeet insoles. I don't understand the lack of cushion some models of shoes have, and these aren't even zero drop. Love idea but I'm going to stick to my Pursuit 2s.
Love these shoes for hiking. I have converted from only wearing hiking boots to now wearing trail runners. I tried the Altra Lone Peaks but felt like they did not have enough cushion for me. I love how these Topo Athletic shoes have a wide toe box, a rockplate, and vibram sole. I have hiked over 70 miles in them already and they have held up great.
The Terraventure 4s fit me really well, and my feet don't roll in or out but stay over the sole. I believe the design has improved over the years (this is the 4th model) with regard to durability. This is definitely the shoe for me.
I became a convert to the barefoot shoe game a few years ago after developing a bunion and battling some plantar fasciitis. My everyday shoes are Lems or Ahinsa. Xero Prio are my street running / gym shoe. My last holdout was hiking shoes. I'm a La Sportiva girlie for climbing shoes and I refused to believe their TX4's would betray me... until they did. I started trail running, and the TX4s did me dirty. Found that a lot of the Topo trail runners have the same rubber as the TX4s, so I tried on many of their options: MTN Racer 3 was too cushy, MT-5 had too high of a drop, and Terraventure 4 felt too narrow in the toe box. After trying on all of Altra's offerings as well, I decided to go up a half size in the Terraventure and I'm pretty happy with it. Did my first trail run this weekend and had no pain, and they handled pretty well on some light scrambling. I'm pleased! Will update you if I need to after more wear.
I purchased a pair of Topo Terraventure 4 waterproof (WP) trail-running shoes for myself last May and was so impressed that I purchased a pair of Topo Pursuit trail-running shoes for myself for dry weather and a pair of Terraventure 4 trail-running shoes for a friend who does not hike in the rain. We have both been happy with the comfort and durability of all three versions. I just purchased the Terraventure 4 Trail-Running shoe to replace the Pursuit which has served me well for over a year. The upper held up great, but the soles no longer have traction from heavy use. I wore the WP version on a recent 15-mile trail hike, but my feet were hot on the warm, dry day. The Terraventure 4 Trail-Running shoe was delivered early for my hike. Unfortunately, there is a tiny flaw in the toe of one shoe, but I know REI will take care of it if the mesh does not hold up. I plan to wear these shoes camping and hiking this week, because the Olympic Peninsula is experiencing a spell of warm, dry weather. I wore the shoes on a 5-mile hike this morning and was surprised that they were much more comfortable than the WP version. The WP version is definitely stiffer, but I'm okay with this when it's raining out. The new shoe is every bit as comfortable as the Pursuit but has a bit stiffer sole. I think this will be an advantage in mountain terrain. I like that the sole is a dark color. The Pursuit required a lot more attention to cleaning the light colored sole sides to keep them looking sharp. Update - The flaw in the mesh quickly led to a hole in the toe. I have the shoes in the box ready to return. Will buy another pair in person so I can inspect them before purchase.
Both shoes came apart inside shoe at base of shoestrings.
