Love YET Ultraventure 5 Foot Stack seems taller?

This is my first Ultraventure 5, have had 3 previous pairs of Ultraventure 4 & LOVED them for the wide toe box (I’ve had bunionectomies on BOTH feet). QUESTION: while REI’s “Compare” says the 4’s & 5’s have the same Forefoot Stack and Heel Stack, the 5’s SEEM much thicker in it’s cushion (& I definitely feel the added support (I use custom-made orthotics)? I’m off to hike Morocco’s High Atlas Mtns and am little worried about what is normally my “Go to!” shoe! Also, AGREE with others who notice the front rubber toe guard detaches with regularity.

A Thru-Hiker's Experience

Just got back from a thru-hike of the Superior Hiking Trail in northern Minnesota. My husband and I used these Topo Ultraventure 5 trail runners for the hike. This pic is post-clean up. I wanted to point out that the toe guard separated from the body about 30 miles into hiking for both of us. they did not get worse over the remaining 270 miles, but they did become really good a grabbing grass, ferns and twigs along the way. Other than that, the shoes preformed really well and we were happy. Now I guess a need to bust out some glue and repair these for some more use.

Comfy but exposed zip foam=early wearing out

I ordered a pair of ultraventure after doing a single day presi traverse in my less padded terraventures. The added cushion was exactly what I was looking for. I loved the terraventures but their more mild cushion wasn’t ideal for long days. I was pleased with them but after wearing them for their second summer in a row and doing Katahdin the upper starting splitting at the toe break. Not a big deal, it is bound to happen. But after checking the bottoms I noticed the ultraventures wore down a lot quicker than my terraventures. I believe it’s due to more exposed lines of the zip foam compared to the nearly full bottom of vibram on the terraventures. I still wanting a more cushioned shoe but now I’m keeping that detail in mind so I orders the men racers. I don’t think I’ll go back to these ones for technical terrain. My terraventures have more tread left after 500miles than my 300miles on these ones. Photo for comparison attached with Terra on left and these ultras on right

Game changer!!

Bought these on a whim the day before a 14-mile hiking event. Previously my trail shoe was a New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro v9. I always felt unstable in these, and even the wide size had my feet feeling cramped. These Topos were a total game changer. The wide, foot-shaped toe box is so gosh darn comfortable, and the sole even has some extra spring to it despite being a low drop and allowing me to feel plenty study and close to the ground. Lightweight as well. My only feedback is that I wish the laces were longer… especially if you’re trying to do a runners loop for extra security… you kind of have to leave one hole unused.

Too squishy

I usually wear a 7 but my big toe touches the top of the shoe too much and went with a 7.5. My planter fascia was on fire by mile 2 of my run and I felt like the foam was absorbing too much of my push off. By mile 3 my knee and shins were bothering me as well and I called it quits. The stack height is only a little taller in the forefoot than my previous shoes but this foam is much more pliable, leaving the base more more unstable IMO. If you're not used to a cushy shoe, I would not recommend these. Disappointed that so many shoes have such a high stack height.

I have weird feet. It isn’t the shoe’s fault.

Returned after 4 miles because my heel slid sideways out of the shoe when I was on a downhill step. This caused the shoe to come off completely and I took a tumble. Tried a different tie pattern and that was even more unstable for the heel. They were comfortable with a great toe box, just didn’t fit my heel properly.

Love this new model!!

This is my 4th pair of Ultraventures. Topos did great with the new model! They are like shock absorbers for my legs and back. I’ve been training for a 100k ultra and just got these a few weeks ago- game changer in my training! These have always had great arch support, love the boxy toe space (my toenails stayed on with my last 100k and a 30k with the Ultraventure 4s I was wearing!). The amount of cushion they added to this model is great. Completely happy with my purchase and this new model. Well done Topos!!

Happy hiker!

Topo was recommended by a foot doctor when he said I have tendinitis at the joint of my big toe. The arch support and snug fit keep my feet secure. Very comfortable, my feet are happy!

Terrible

I didn’t buy these from REI so I can’t return them, but they’re terrible as soon as they got the slightest bit wet the inner and outer lining separated, and I got blisters all over the top of my toes. This happened to a friend of mine too.

"Updates" have ruined the shoe

Completely changed from the last version. The heelcup is no longer as deep as it was so the heel slips out. The tongue is wider and the laces do not fit the same. I don't know why they had to mess with a good thing!
