Not for me, but maybe for someone else
I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review. Please take my review with a grain of salt--I tend to be particular about pillows. This pillow is light weight and squishy. The stuffing feels like chunks of foam and the pillow runs moderate to firm. To be honest, this hurt my neck to sleep on, however I do prefer a soft pillow and have NEVER liked foam-style pillows. Often I find myself balling up a Nanopuff jacket to sleep on when backpacking, since they're soft and pliable. My husband didn't have the same discomfort laying on this, however he prefers a moderate firmness in his pillows. As you can see in the photos, it is still quite a bit larger than a standard Nalgene and would take up a bit of space in a pack. Frankly, this doesn't pack down to 1/5th the size as claimed but is still a good option for those that prefer a firm pillow with more traditional filling, rather than an air pillow. The shape would fit most mummy bags well, regardless if they're REI brand. A positive: it's machine washable!
Much Better Than Inflatable Pillows
I enjoyed sleeping and napping with this pillow because it was comfortable and you can adapt it to the shape you need if you are sleeping sideways, face-up or face-down. I have another inflatable pillow and this cute edamame pillow is much more comfortable. Inflatable pillows are very solid/rigid and I end up opting for pushing it away as I can't sleep on them. I have a new favorite pillow. I did not give it the full five stars, because it is not as compact as the inflatable pillows. However, I do not mind it taking a little more space as I know my sleep will be better while using this Mummy bag pillow. It does not weight much either. It is perfect for napping in your picnics and while camping in your tent! Also beware, you might want to get a second one if you have a significant other hahaha.
Fits a Mummy Bag Well
The Trailmade Mummy Bag Pillow by REI Co-op is designed to fit inside the hood of a mummy bag and it does that well. It nests neatly within the hood to provide a pillow that fills the space without pushing out. That said, I didn't find it to be the most comfortable or the best at saving space in my pack. The pillow folds over and tucks into itself. It is secured with a loop and a toggle. The folded pillow doesn't save much space over the expanded pillow. I also think the folding bunches up the fill inside the pillow making it lumpy. I spent a while trying knead the filling to spread it out and break up some of the lumps, but I wasn't very successful. Despite my concerns, the pillow is a good size for a bag and is certainly an improvement over letting your head lie on the ground. It may be most suitable for backyard use, car camping, and short overnight trips. The color and pattern is pleasant and my wife found that it worked well as a neck pillow to lean against in the car.
Honest review aka No Cap
Listen, your backpacking with this pillow... its not gonna be a crazy comfortable option but it by farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr beats the inflate able ones. It feels like I am sleeping on a mini pillow which is 100x better than a slightly deflated pool toy. Get this if u dont like the blow up pillows and go backpacking. If youre car camping just bring a pillow from home, wouldnt get this for any other reason besides backpacking! And tucking it away after use is easy af idk what the other people are talking ab lol. But i do give it four stars only because its not perfect or groundbraking tech. Do what you must with this information the outdoorz await you my friends!!$$$$$
Nice car camping pillow
This pillow is great in a mummy bag! This is the first time I've had a pillow that fit in the hood. It stays put during my rolling around at night. I like that one side is soft and warm fleece, the other smooth and cool nylon. It stuffs into it own "bag" to keep the inside clean. However, the reason it did't get a 5 star is that it doesn't pack down enough for backpacking. I'll still use a small inflatable for backpacking, but I'll use this pillow for alll my car camping because it is much more comfortable.
Balanced pillow
I’m am obsessed with having a good night sleep while backpacking. I’ve owned and slept many pillows, about 5 inflatables (including Fillo Pillow and Exped down pillow) and three memory foam ones (Thermorest compressible classic and cinch, REI trail break). They either have poor support or too bulky. This pillow is the first that I think balanced the requirements just right. First, due to the geometry, the pillow does compress down relatively small compared to other memory foam ones. I sleep in a quilt, but I found the shape and size of the pillow to still be adequate. Second, the weight is not bad, a couple of ounces heavier than average inflatable pillows. Third, the price is very reasonable. Lastly, it is supportive. I side sleep, and tend to get bad neck and shoulder pain with inflatable pillows. These are one of the few that I slept quite well in. I’ve found the foam does compress down, but not as much as thermorest ones (they turn into flat pancakes in the morning). Overall, quite impressed with how REI carefully balancing the trade offs. If you’ve been searching for a pillow, I recommend you to try it out, you might like it a lot.
I am very excited about this pillow!!!!
I have been looking for the perfect pillow and I have high hopes for this guy. My luxury item is a comfortable foam pillow. The genius of this one is fitting in the hood of my sleeping bag. I had been using a larger pillow just because they move around so much when I do. This guy will stay secure in place and I won't have to go chasing it around with my head all night!!! And the shape shaves weight and space in my pack which is always a welcome plus.
Comfortable but could use a little tweaking.
I think there were 2 sizes, and I went with the larger? I honestly can't remember. It was on sale and I jumped on it, as my normal solution is to use my sleeping bag's stuff sack full of clothes as a pillow, and it's just not comfy enough. This pillow is fine, but it's on the small side. Also, the built-in compression strap or loop thingy doesn't really compact this down in size much. Worth it? On sale: yes. Full price: no.
New Version is Terrible Quality
I bought one of these last year in teal and it works great. Bought another one a few months ago and it's not comfortable or supportive. The new batch uses less foam so it completely compresses under your head at night and offers no support, is not comfortable at all after the first 10 minutes.
Too small for side sleeper
I’m a side sleeper, average height and athletic build. This pillow is too small for me. Might be good for back sleepers or people with small frames.
