Best Avy Shovel
I’ve recommended this to everyone. As a ski patroller, we practice Avy rescue scenarios, and this shovel is fantastic. It’s lightweight, has a D handle, and goes into hoe mode while being able to store flat, plus is cuts through firm snow quite well. Construction is ideal, having a welded collar for the shaft to slide into, and the shaft is oval, so when deploying the pins are lined up when extending. Excellent choice, and I’m unaware of a better one on the market. Lighter when it comes to rescue equipment is not the way to go, get a tool that will do the job well when it comes to saving your friend’s life.

Light and capable, but long handle
This is pretty close to a perfect avalanche shovel. It's light but sturdy, has a full grip, and supports either normal shovel mode or hoe mode (which guides agree lets you move a lot more snow quickly). The blade size is good and the build quality seems solid. There are a couple minor issues: (1) I wish Mammut had added a little stopper rivet to prevent accidentally overshooting the little clip that holds the handle in place, in either mode. It's easy to accidentally push the handle too far through, especially when you're moving fast in crisis mode. (2) The handle is quite long, even when fully collapsed and separated from the blade. It just barely fits into my BD Dawn Patrol 32 avalanche pocket, and requires some careful positioning of the other components to fit at all. I haven't found the same thing to be true of a couple other avalanche shovels.

Great light weight shovel/hoe
While I have not used this shovel/hoe in an actual rescue, I have enjoyed using it while practicing rescues. It is light weight. The tabs that keep it in shovel or hoe mode allow the user to simply shove the handle into the correct position without needing to push the tabs in, or ensure it aligns properly (it will stop and click into place). The cutting edge of the shovel/hoe cuts through hard snowpack with ease. It fits really nicely in my backpack, better than my older shovel. Also, there are instructions on how to care for the product, and lifespan info (metal is unlimited, plastic parts are 10yrs (I'm not sure if you can order replacement plastic parts)), on the packaging so check that out as well.

Best shovel for patrolling I've used
One of routine jobs most ski patrollers do to keep the hills safe is the raising and lowering of lift tower pads. This shovel is the bomb for doing this job. I carry the shovel for avalanche work but have discovered it is awesome for getting this job done quick. Much faster than any other shovel I've ever used. The hoe option is the trick. If the pads are close I can ski in and without even having to remove my skis I can either quickly fill the gaps or dig them out a little. If the pads are really buried or even iced in like we get here in the pacific northwest, this shovel really is tough and can bust through the ice and clear lots of snow quickly to get the job done quick. I would recommend this tool to any ski patroller who has to do this job as part of their work routine.

The blade is a bit bigger than I was expecting and doesn't fit in one of my main backcountry ski backpacks very well. Another caveat I hadn't thought about before buying this was if you're planning on digging pits in a cold snowpack climate, this shovel is not very good at shoveling the sugary faceted crystals always found at the bottom because of all the holes in the blade. Overall however, I love how light the shovel is for as big as it is and seems very sturdy and well made.

Great shovel to bring to the backcountry
As a ski patroller I look for tools that make the things I do easier and more efficient. This version of the Alugator fits the bill. It is reasonably light weight for the amount of snow it can move. The shovel can bite in to compacted snow, the handle is comfortable with prolonged use and the various holes in the blade allow it to be used and attached to various packs, cats and duffels. And the hoe action is so useful when scraping out a hole or a snow cave entrance.

Perfect dimensions and the hoe function is a huge plus. However the shaft is a bit wobbly and its easy to miss the spot where it locks in place. It would be better to have an assymetrical design to not have to think about which way it goes in the hoe mode as well as a stop preventing the handle to come undone when you extend it. In an avalanche situation I want to be able to focus on the rescue and not loose precious seconds deploying my shovel

This is a good strong shovel for a relatively light product which makes it great for touring. Its size is adequate for quickly excavating pits and it's flat blade helps carve walls cleanly. It's got a D handle for mitts. My only complaint is that you can jam the handle past the stopper button in hoe mode sometimes if you're not careful which is annoying. A simple welded stop would solve this. Good product if you know it's quirks.

I never thought a Hoe would be so beneficial
It's a great shovel that turns into a hoe to assist in pulling snow from around the victim. I shopped quite a few shovels without the hoe feature and kept returning to the Alugator Pro. Thankfully, I have not had to use this dual-purpose tool in an emergency, but living at 8,000 feet in the mountains of Utah, I have had the opportunity to use the Alugator Pro more than a few times, and I am glad I made this purchase.
