Bulletproof shovel

Our local search and rescue team had a training last week on avalanche responses. For those who've never been near post-avalanche debris, the closest our captain was able to get to resemble the conditions was the HIGHLY packed snowplow berm at the station. We stuck a probe 120cm into the bank and stated that was the depth of our patient and set to digging. Five of the BD Evac 9 shovels were put to work tearing into the icy bank. Even fully extended, we could stand on the shovel blade to dig into the ice creating an ice block, and then leverage that heavy chunk out without ANY apparent damage to any of the shovels. Awesome, powerful shovel that I highly recommend.

This shovel is a beast

This little shovel is a total powerhouse. I carried it with me all winter when going out on snowshoeing adventures, mainly because the small parking lot trailhead where I like to hike rarely got plowed all winter and we had a record snowfall in Alaska. I was able to quickly shovel out heavy, chunky snow so I could park and I was easily able to dig myself out the few times I got stuck in my Jeep. I can only imagine this shovel is amazing in the backcountry. I'll carry it with me everywhere next winter.

After one year, I can no longer extend the shovel

I really wish this shovel worked for me, it is an absolute beast in snow and ice and really gets the job done! It can be broken down into a few pieces, or just compacted down while in one piece and it can get so tiny it fits easily in a backcountry bag! Unfortunately, my experience with this shovel went downhill after one season. The shovel is stuck in its most compact form, and no matter how much pressure I apply to the shovel I cannot get it to extend open. I am unsure why this is happening, I assumed it was frozen solid at first but it has sat at room temperature for quite some time and it is still stuck. The shovel can still be used, but do to it being compacted to the smallest size the handle sticks out into the handle, so I now have to warp my fingers around the handle but avoid the pole sticking through the center. Additionally, without being able to extend the shovel it is not very useful in backcountry situations as I cannot shovel quickly in the smallest size. I have attempted to get this rectified by REI, but they do not help after the one year warranty has expired. Again, this is a great shovel and really can help in sticky situations, but be aware that there may be some functional issues with the extension aspect of this particular item

First Shovel

Just getting into touring, this shovel is massive but still fits will in my pack. It's not quite as lightweight as some of the options with speed holes in it, but this isn't an item worth skimping on. Feels like it will hold up to years of abuse and the mechanism that connects the handle to the shovel is quick and intuitive.

Best shovel ever but...

Shovel is too large and funny shaped for human powered activities and a small pack. I tried, and benched it. I used it in hoe mode to shovel a roof and I wish I had it years ago for that. This thing moves tons of snow with less effort. A must have for the car, snowmobile or any time you need to move a buttload of snow

Excellent design and build quality.

Excellent design and build quality. Assembles seamlessly in both a scoop and hoe configuration. Lightweight but sturdy. Handle extends to provide a reasonable amount of leverage for such a packable shovel. I have one in each vehicle in the winter and stuff them in my avy pack when headed out in the backcountry.

Excellent

The several configurations, volume it can move and very low weight are what I consider in deeming this a five star shovel. It is expensive but that is a consideration in purchasing this shovel and not a factor of quality.

Fantastic shovel

This is the best shovel out there. When your buddy is under the snow you want the biggest and best this is it. Hoe move let’s you move a ton of snow quickly and the handle helps you dig harder and faster

Meets expectaions

The shovel is everything that I expected. It is well build and the ability to change how the shovel functions by changing the orientation of the handle add functionality. It is compact and well built.

Awesome Sangwich!

Great shovel! I bought this to stow in my trunk as part of my winter car kit. I look forward to the first chance to use it to either dig myself out of a parking spot, or to clear a spot to park in.
