Necessity for high-alpine travel
This is my favorite thing I've ever owned, hands down. The fit is just roomy enough that you can have a layer or two underneath without making you look excessively bulky, and the extra length was awesome - I think it helped me stay warmer if I was just wearing leggings (I usually wore with Ghost Whisperer Pants). I'd recommend this parka to anyone traveling to high-altitude places and looking for something cozy to wear at camp. *In Fall 2019, a group of Mountain Hardwear Employees journeyed to Everest Base Camp. This product testimonial is based on three weeks of gear testing in the rugged terrain of the Khumbu Valley.
Super warm, cozy, great “they’ll see you a mile away” color!
I absolutely LOVE my Phantom Parka! It’s super comfortable, feels like a cloud, and is the first parka I’ve ever owned where I can truly say I was not cold at all. While I hike, I’m actually a cold water marathon swimmer, ice swimmer, and backcountry swimmer where many of the locations there is no shelter and/or vehicle upon exit. That means it is up to us to rewarm under our own abilities. Rewarming efficiently and quickly is critical for safety and prevention of hypothermia. This jacket is key to recovery so I can get warm as quickly as possible upon exit. May not be the intended use, but I love my sport and love how Mountain Hardwear products can be used for sport that are a little unconventional! When I do go hiking and camping, it’s the first think I pack in my bag and keeps me warm on those cold and snowy nights. I love the color and makes me feel that if something happened, I would be a little more easily spotted that in a dark color jacket. I have lots is Mountain Hardware products, this is by far my favorite!
Lukewarm down jacket
I’ve been searching for a high-quality warm puffy down jacket like the ones that were available 10-15+ years ago, and I thought this one might be it. It looks puffy and warm in the photos, but unfortunately it’s fairly thin and there isn’t much loft to it. I wore it indoors for a couple hours with the heat on and felt comfortable, but not hot, which doesn’t bode well for winter backpacking. I do like the length, pockets, and hood with face coverage, and it is comfortable. It is a nice jacket, but for $400 ($300 on clearance) I expected significantly more loft.
Like wearing a sleeping bag!
I bought this for my wife who has Scleroderma and Raynauds. She has very poor circulation and staying warm especially in her hands is always hard. This thing is the absolute warmest jacket I have ever seen or felt. It is definitely enough loft. She rides horses professionally and the hood is large enough to accommodate a riding helmet. The added core warmth has improved her cold hand situation. It isn’t form fitting and you won’t win any fashion contests with this. But if you want the Nuclear Option when it comes to warmth buy this jacket and don’t look back!
Totally in love
I just got this parka and tested it at -11 degrees Celsius (about 12 degrees Fahrenheit) outside, in the snow. It was fantastic! It more than passed the test. I was warm and cozy in what felt like a super light blanket wrapped around me. Never felt this in love with a piece of clothing before. Love everything about it, including the deep zippered pockets and the gorgeous colour (Gold). The colour is even prettier than in the picture online. I sized up as suggested by the website and it fits great with lots of room if I choose to wear a thick mid-layer (not that it's needed as the parka is more than warm enough). Totally in love with this parka.
Great down parka for cold days.
This winter has been consistently in the -20 to -30C range and I have never been cold with this parka. Jam it down into my pack, it is very compressible and ready to be pulled out when we take a break on the trail. My only suggestion would be for a different material on the inside of the collar. The material gets wet from my breath and feels kind of slimey. I've been wearing a loose wool neck gaiter to sit against the inside of the collar as a buffer. I wear a large. I'm 5'8" and 175lbs. It is roomy enough to fit another lighter insulated jacket underneath. Love the big inner pockets to carry extra mitts. The colours are amazing. I have the yellow and absolutely love it.
Fantastic parka for extreme cold
I bought this coat for walking to work where I live in Labrador, Canada. I am plenty warm in temperatures in the -30 C range. Very impressed with the nice features on the jacket, including the big pockets, water resistant materials, insulated tubes on either side of the zipper. Fit is perfect. I am normally XS and bought XS. I can wear a fleece underneath and honestly can't imagine needing any more layers than that. It is a good length too. The hood is great but I would personally prefer a bit more wind protection at the sides. Overall a really great purchase.
The way a winter parka should be/!
Fit is great, except for the arms, which are a bit on the snug side. Other than that, it is roomy to fit over layers, without be being so baggy as to loose the warm air. The cut is nice and long in back, the way it should be. Nice baffling (full box baffles) and decently filled baffles too. Great detail on the cuffs: the elastic is not at the end, so that the down filled sleeve can still cover the base of your hand. Unlike some brands, there is no excess fabric lining the inside. Good drop in pockets, as a winter/belay parka should have. Good hood.
Warm and cozy
I did my research on finding a really warm high quality multi use parka for the coldest temps for camping, hut trips, epic ski days, and bumming around town during storms. I landed on this and it has not disappointed. The sizing is roomy, so if you want something more fitted, size down. I wanted something I could wear over other layers and wear alone. I'm a bit over 5' 7"/145 lbs and a medium athletic build and its perfect for what I wanted. For comparison, I also wear a M in Patagonia. It's like being wrapped in your favorite down sleeping bag.
Best jacket ever!
This is a replacement for a 15 year old mountain hardwear jacket that I recently lost. I run super cold all the time but this jacket is so warm and impenetrable. Nothing leaks through this thing. I tried numerous other similar jackets including some very high end expensive jackets and none compare with the warmth and comfort of this jacket. Every detail from the softness around the neck/chin area and the sleeves are perfectly thought out. It is like wearing a sleeping bag. I couldn't recommend this enough even for just casual around town wear.
